Your view on wearing jerseys

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

i've had a feeling for a long time that this is a topic that needs its own arena, if you will. It has broken out in other threads about adults wearing jerseys vs. those against it. Time for one discussion.

What is your view on wearing jerseys to sporting events/while watching sporting events (and nothing more) and why?

Perhaps this shows a differing perspective on jerseys then

I wear my hockey sweater because I love Michigan hockey and it makes sense to wear it to support the team. I do not literally envision myself being a member of the team when I wear it. Just a supporter - no different than wearing a "2015 Michigan Football" student section t-shirt for example

So why did you stop? Serous question. I love Michigan. I think our jerseys look awesome so I wear one from time to time. Almost always when I go to a game, and other times as well (my kids love it and always ask to wear theirs too when I do).

Does that reflect negatively on me or make me immature? I am married with two kids, have a mortgage, cars and work 50+ hours a week at a very adult job. I just don't get the who "adults don't wear jerseys" thing.

It feels like playing the kid game dress up to me. I don't feel the need to try to pretend to be the athletes by dressing like them, or to represent them in any way, shape, or form.  They are just people, and they shouldn't be put on too big of a pedestal.

Our jersey's do look great. I just have a hard time worshipping people my own age or younger. I respect their accomplishments and I hope the players do well, but I am more proud of my school than any individual player.

I don't care what others wear really as long as they aren't wearing white or blue on maize outs or have them tucked in their jeans.... WHY?!?!?.... I always wear my maize hockey jersey (Shoulder to opposite waist style) to every game at Yost and usually to other hockey games (GLI sometimes can't as im out drinking downtown Windsor before or after and taking tunnel bus). Rarely wear the hockey jersey to football games but have in the past (usually when there is a hockey game later that night at home)

Only acceptable if little kids wear it year round (basketball or football). Unfortunately, if you're past that age it's only acceptable on Gameday or the day before Gameday (Friday at work, Friday event, etc.). It's moronic if you wear them at the beginning of the following week or during off season. The worse is when people wear them and it's not in season. Such as watching a UM football game and people are wearing basketball jersey's and vice versa. Completely dumb and looks stupid.

You know what's "the worse"? Your post. I have never met you, but you come off as a judgmental, somewhat pompous guy who thinks that three are bright line rules as to when you deem it appropriate for others to wear what they want?

Football jersey to a bball game? The horror! Basketball jersey during the offseason? My word! Wearing white after Labor Day? So tacky!

Who are you to tell me what s acceptable or not?

I wear hockey and baseball jerseys at games, but none with names or numbers on them. I stopped wearing football jerseys after the 2013 OSU game. I was walking down State St. a couple hours after the game and passed Taylor Lewan walking his dog, still looking devastated, and it just felt wrong wearing a Michigan football jersey at that moment. Haven't worn one since.

Worrying about wearing a jersey while watching sports is idiotic. If you're worrying about wearing a jersey elsewhere, then you're worrying too much about casual clothing.

I wear a wings jersey only during playoff time, and i still have my Michigan Steve Sheild's jersey. My arms are too long for it now, but it reminds me of watching some great Michigan hockey from the mid-ninties. Remember Mike Legg's lacrosse-style goal against Minnesota? Or Knuble's deadly wrist-shot?

I enjoy dressing up pre-WW2 style at ballgames. Nice suit and fedora. Now jerseys? I don't particularly care. People can run around in their birthday suits if they like.

I personally think it's ridiculous that this is even something that is debated. With exception of anything overtly and explicitly offensive, when in a casual environment you should wear whatever the hell you want.

I live in St. Louis and i'm as avid a Cardinals fan as i am for my Wolverines...One thing i love is going to a game and seeing a fan in her/his upper 60's to 70's wearing a Stan Musial Jersey. I believe that teams with a rich history--like the Cards and UM--should NEVER tire of fans who celebrate that great history with Jerseys bearing the great names of the past.  Personally, i would love to be at the Big House this fall and see a "Dierdorff" or a "Harmon" jersey.  Who knows, maybe one day when i have grandkids and take them to the Big House i will wear a "Shoelace" tee shirt under a "D.Robinson" jersey.  Wanna try and ruin my buzz then with your "too old" nonsense???  Didn't thinks so.  Wear on, great UM fans...Wear on!!

I don't think there is a universal set of rules . My theory is , you shouldn't wear a jersey of a man who is younger than you.... Therefore , being an early 80's boy I only Rock. Desmond Howard / Jalen Rose at the earliest!

No.  I have my old ones though from when I was younger (Brady, Braylon, and I think Henne I bought while in college).  I've also got a retro Barry Sanders Okie St. jersey as well as a Florida (Grossman?) and Georgia (David Greene) jersey...don't ask.  I don't where them.  I also don't wear socks with sandals, white socks with my oxfords/wingtips, cargo shorts when not hiking, Tommy Bahama shits, faded dad jeans, baseball hats or any hats for that matter (nothing wrong with a proper driving cap or nice fedora, however, I just don't), denim jackets not matter how much the rage they are right now, short sleeve dress shirts, deep V-necks...the list goes on.  Now, I don't give a rats ass what you wear nor for your explaining to everyone your sartorial choices and reasoning on why they're acceptable or "okay".  I might judge you a little bit, more laugh a little to myself if I feel you look ridiculous, but I'm an asshole anyway, and you also shouldn't give a shit what I think.

I'm in the "wear what you want" crowd. Now, I personally don't wear jerseys, and have no desire to. Never have, and doubt I ever will. But I know folks that do wear jerseys, and they're pushing 80.

For some reason, I think it's cute when boys wear jerseys. My 13 year old son was so excited to get his Denard jersey a couple years ago. He has a bunch of jerseys, from playing ball, and from elsewhere.

I also think the jerseys look great on his sisters. Grown men? It just isn't my style.

One way to think about this:  would you like your mother and father to wear jerseys? In public? Going shopping, to the mall, to a movie, to church? If you're good with it, that's great. If you're not, that's probably a clue about what you think is appropriate for jersey wear.

Final thought:  when I think of grown men wearing jerseys, here's the kind of image that comes to mind:

Image result for overweight ohio state fan jersey

Just not the picture I like. I'll close where I began:  wear what you want. But I don't want to wear a jersey.

I don't mind jerseys. I have jerseys. I don't mind seeing jerseys at a store on a Saturday.I just don't like it when the jersey is not in season. For some reason seeing a football jersey in May is just weird.

I don't care about fashion or the wardrobe of others, but since I'm not a player, woman, or child, I personally have no interest in wearing a football jersey. I own a #1 but I felt real odd (judged by myself) the last time I wore it and will likely never do it again. It just seemed too "weakling white boy sycophant."

The only exception to my tendency may be hockey. I don't yet own a hockey jersey, but I played for a dozen years and I think owning a Wings or M hockey jersey would be somehow different. If that's contradictory, then it's only because a person is a dang complicated thing.

I wear my hockey jersey for basically every Michigan sporting event. Why would anyone else give a sh*t about if I wear a jersey or not? Who died and made you sports fashion queen?

The last time this subject came up, I replied that I wear my jersey (with khakis, by the way) to the games as long as weather permits. If some anonymous stranger doesn't care for the sight of a 54-year-old man in a UM jersey, he's got 109,900 people whose fashion choices he can pass judgement on. Or maybe, he could just watch the damn game.

But here's a better story: Several years ago, I worked for an organization that held luncheons with guest speakers. That week, Bo and Brandstatter were our guests. I decided to wear my jersey (again, with khakis) instead of my usual suit. As I stood behind the registration table, Bo passed by. He saw me in the jersey, barked "Hey number 12, how are you?" and stuck out his hand. I got to shake the hand of the man I'd worshiped since I was 9.

So, if Bo didn't mind seeing a man in his 40's wearing a UM jersey, I'm not gonna be too concerned with other opinions. (Except that of my girlfriend, and she likes seeing me in it. So I got that going for me ... which is nice.)

Lemme get this straight.  We pay rather large amounts of money to go watch representatives of one rich man's company play a game against representatives of another rich man's company and hope the ones in the right colors score more points.  We've never met these people, but that doesn't matter.  Many people also pay money not to learn about the decisions of a 16-year-old boy, but the feelings of a 16-year-old boy before he makes the decision.

All this is rational, but we draw the line at wearing the wrong kind of shirt?  How irrationally picky is that?

It amazes me, too. I simple cannot understand why some people are either so against wearing them or they only believe people should wear them during certain situations. For me, I only wear them during games, but do not care one but if someone wears one any other time.

It's not even the fact that people think it's generally fine, or not fine.  I expected that.  I'm pretty shocked, though, that people think "a hockey sweater is totally appropriate, everything else is weird" or "it's fine so long as the athlete is older than me."  Based on the responses so far, I wouldn't be suprised if the next answer is "well, I take the mean current age of all of the players who wore that number at michigan, and if that number is greater my age plus the number of wins Michigan has accrued during the current season, then it's okay."

I suppose I am in trouble now because I recently got jerseys from China to add to my collection. Got a blue Harbaugh and Burke (names on back) and also a white Michael Jordan and blue LeBron James. Others I have from the past include a blue Braylon (autographed and framed), white 2 (no name but it is a McGuffie), white 15 (no name but it is a Breaston), blue Desmond (name on back), blue Denard (name on back), UTL 16, white 32 (A Train), and a winter classic Datsyuk.

I think it looks a little tacky.  I prefer just to wear team colors in the form of a t-shirt, long sleeve, polo, or even jacket.  But, whatever floats your boat.  The problem with jerseys is they don't go with anything other than an actual uniform.  They look goofy with jeans, shorts, khakis, sweatpants, athletic shorts/pants, whatever.  They just don't match with any clothes for the lower half.

Depends on the sport: for hockey it is preferred, regardless of age. For football, wear it if you've got and don't have a stick up your backside. For baseball, it's fine (and bring a glove, so long as any ball you snag still goes to a kid). For basketball, let the guys on the court wear the jerseys.

I've never seen the point of adults wearing team jerseys, but to each his own I suppose.  I do kind of like the idea of an older person wearing a vintage jersey of a player from a bygone era, though that someone mentioned upthread. That sounds kind of cool. No beanie caps with propellers, though.

I never thought about the whole jersey thing until i met Matt Damon. I was at the final concert at Giants Stadium before they tore it down. It was Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Baand,(obviously). A friend with knew the head of security got us up fron on the floor. I'm standing there and I notice Matt Damon next to me double fisting. I said hello and shook his hand and decided to leave him alone after that. Not sure how big a fan he was though because at one point he asked me what song was playing and i had to tell him it was Jersey Girl. How does a Bruce fan not know....anyway a friend and his wife come over and are all star struck and get the selfie, etc. My friend is wearing an Eli Manning jersey. I'm making believe i don't know them. After they leave an older woman in Matt's group(I believe the mother in-law) turns to him and says something like "why can't people leave you alone" or something like that. Then Matt says back"Pfft,I know, and what's with the jersey? What does he think he's Eli manning?" That made me think about it. I think wearing one at a game is fine. Right enviroment. Outside of a game, I personally wouldn't but I wouldn't be snooty about it like he was.
