OT - Best Burger In Each State

Submitted by Moe on

Came across this list on Yahoo today.  No big surprise as Blimpy Burger was the vote for Michigan.  As a Chicago resident, I was happy to see Au Cheval make the list for Illinois as that burger is to die for.  And lastly, the best burger I ever had made the cut, at Parlour in Minneapolis.  So board, did the list do your state justice?

I had In-N-Out for the first time last week and I wasn't all that impressed.  I thought 5 Guys even beat it, rather easily.

I've never been to Memphis so I've never been able to try the best burger in TN where I currently reside.  I have had some of the bigger name places in Nashville that specialize in burgers: Gabby's, Burger Up, Burger Republic, but the one that easily tops my list is The Pharmacy.  The Farm burger with the fried egg is amazing.  Excellent bun as well.  A key to any great burger.

In & Out by far.  Yes, it's overrated, but the toppings are of a far higher quality than you get at any other chain, making up for the so-so meat.  Also, In & Out really overdoes the "spread" (the Thousand Island-like special sauce), so ask for it with mustard instead of "spread".

Five Guys?  It really seems like they use massive amounts of cheese to hide the quality of the rest of their product.

I've never been a fan of MIller's.  I think it's the most overrated burger in Southeast Michigan.  Mason's in Livonia has a pretty good burger, but my absolute favorite burger right now is at the Bronx Bar in Midtown near Wayne State's campus.  That burger is absolutely outstanding.

It's actually Kroll's. Been eating them all my life. I'm partial to the east side Kroll's in Green Bay, although west side is conveniently located across the street from Lambeau.

Au Cheval- good burger, terrible service. Pickle back is a must to wash down burger.

Kuma's- gone downhill I think. Still solid burger but fries are now no Bueno. Mac n cheese is still the best.

Lockdown- kuma's without the one hour wait.

Co-sign Au Cheval, but I would add Owen & Engine as a tie with Au Cheval.

Also, a new up and comer with an outstanding burger is White Oak (formerly John's Place) in Lincoln park. It is really outstanding.

By the way, a not surprising coincidence is that the beef for the burger at each of these places comes from the same farm - Slagel Farms in IL.

Another favorite of mine is DMK, but DMK is a bit of a different style burger with thinner patties.

Last, agree that Kumas has gone downhill. I think it is all hype now and no substance at that place.

Kuma's? You are spot on, although I have not tried White Oak. Now I will - I can walk there for my next burger fix. Thanks for the rec! Please keep the Chicago recs a'coming people. We choose to live here, we may as well enjoy it.

If you can walk to White Oak then I assume you can also make it to Local Option. Love that place, too. Great beers and always a good selection of Michigan brews.

The black woman who used to wear her t-shirts backwards so the logo was facing the counter instead of the grill? It was a rite of passage to have her scream at you.

Fun fact: She worked as a UPS delivery person in addition to her job at Blimpy. She was the person who delivered the packages to East Quad when I lived there.

I'll have to agree that the Parlour burger is pretty amazing.  Minneapolis has an amazing burger scene.  I have probably shaved off a couple years of my life by taking advantage of it.

Blimpy burger was okay.  Glad I tried it, but probably won't wait in that line again.

about 150 yards from the place.  I was never really aware of the lines because we'd go at, you know, 3 in the afternoon.  The best deal was to get two doubles or triples because you got more bun (food) for the money.  My standard order was 2 doubles with egg on kaisers with pickles, raw onions, and brown mustard and a side of rings or mushrooms.
