Professional grading services are the biggest distinction between modern value determination and the practice of having a card shop evaluate a card or collection. PSA maintains a database of all the cards they grade, so they know exactly how many 10 Mint (and all other grades) cards exist (or at least that have matriculated through their service). Mint cards are rare, not just because their condition was well maintained, but often because the production/QC created most of the cards in a run with non-optimal chracteristics.
As a teenager I inherited part of a large vintage collection from a relative who passed away. I had them stored away for 25 years and cataloged most of the collection a few years ago. Simply put, sending cards to PSA is a humbling experience. Of the 30k+ cards in my collection, there we approximately 30 that I thought would be with grading. Some came back as 10 but they weren’t rare enough to have a substantial value. The most potentially valuable card in the collection was a 1980 Topps Rickey Henderson rookie. A 10 Mint sold for more than $30k a few years ago. Less than ten exist IIRC. The one I have would be considered flawless to the untrained eye. 4 perfectly sharp corners. Centered. Vibrant colors. It came back as an 8.5.
Despite the cards not having the value I had hoped for, the experience of cataloging and grading the cards was a lot of fun.
Assuming he suffered the same injury as last year it's not inconceivable for him to return mid-season. Drew Henson had a surgically repaired Jones fracture the final week of camp in 2000 and was back on the field for the Illinois game in week 4.
Prior to the Michigan game OSU averaged 51 penalty yards in regulation in 2016. Against Michigan they had 1 penalty yard in regulation. Well over 2 standard deviations from the mean. The game was a huge outlier in terms of penalty yardage.
Let's further compare 2015 to 2016. MSU's 2015 Resume was dramatically better than that of 2016 Wisconsin or Penn State. Wisconsin nor PSU are likely to benefit from the same consideration this year because they don't have half the resume that 2015 MSU did. Throw on top the fact that 2015 MSU was beat down in the semi-final and the ratings were a disaster. It's quite obvious that the CFP committee is placing less emphasis on Conferance Championships this year solely by virtue of their current rankign of OSU, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Colorado. Their stated goal before they employ the use of any metric is to put the four best teams into the playoff. The fact that there was two hours of debate whehter Michigan or Washington belonged in the #4 spot further emphasizes that point. In terms of metrics, conference championships is only one of several, none of which are weighted in any particular order. It's all entirely possible (and even likely) that conf championship will be wieghted less than the other metrics. Weather & Injuries are even metrics that are considered in the selection process, which also goes in our favor (Speight played OSU w/ a broken collarbone). The stregth of wins is what will give Michigan the edge. Michigan and OSU have virtually the same resume and OSU is essentially already a lock. They table has been set. Go Buffs! Hope Harbaugh watches some game film of Washington this week and gives Coach MacIntrye a phone call or two.
2015 MSU: B1G Champions, 3-0 CFP Top 10, 4-0 CFP Top 25, H2H win to OSU
2015 OSU: 0-1 CFP Top 10, 1-1 CFP Top 25
2016 Wisc: B1G Champions*, 1-1* CFP Top 10, 2-1* CFP Top 25, H2H Lossses to Mich & OSU
2016 PSU: B1G Champions**, 2-1 CFP Top 10, 2-2* CFP Top 25, H2H Loss to Mich, H2H Win to OSU
2016 Mich: 3-1 CFP Top 10, 3-1 CFP Top 25, H2H Wins over PSU & Wisconsin, H2H Loss to OSU
2016 OSU: 3-1 CFP Top 10, 3-1 CFP Top 25, H2H Wins over Michigan & Wisconsin, H2H Loss to PSU
The NCAA cannot get a proper post season becuase they don't control it; the conferences do. The conferences have controlled the money and the system since the Bowl Coalition, and then the BCS, and now to the CFP. The NCAA has always been on the outside looking in and the P5 want to keep it that way. The real reason we don't have an 8 team playoff is because the only bargaining chip the NCAA has is that they could claim adding extra games is detrimental to the lives of student-athletes.
NCAA makes 90% of it's operating budget from March Madness. The get jack from the CFP and the CFP wants to keep it that way.
Also, in an image of a truly "perfect angle" the 15 yard line would be perfectly square with the bottom border of the image.
This image is a few degrees off because the vantage point is slightly ahead of the 15, just as many of the other images were behind it. FTR, I think Barrett was short based on all the evidence.
Michigan matches up so much better this year vs the OSU inside power run game with healthy versions of Glasgow & Hurst. Running between the tackles is still the hallmark of the OSU offense. M needs to get four quarters of sure tackling from LBs, disruptive DT play, and contain from the DEs to keep it low scoring and force Barrett to beat us through the air. Play the field position game and take advantage of our superior ST matchups.
Agreed. Speight's dropback & pocket footwork as well as his ability to anticipate where pressure is going to come from are far superior to what O'Korn showed yesterday. Those factors seemed to be bigger contributors to his poor play than arm strength and accuracy.
You didn't see a single high level throw? The fourth quarter 3rd & 7 crossing route to Darboh showed solid arm strength. Accurate, hard-thrown ball off his back foot while being pressured and rolling out. Also, the deep ball to Darboh in the third quarter (play before second De'veon TD) was on-the-money and Darboh short-armed it.
I will be in Section 7 thanks to stubhub and whatever season ticket holder unloaded their tix (shame on you!). Michigan fans need to get their maize & blue butts into as many seats as possible. This team will embarrass MSU on the field and we can embarrass their fanbase by taking over Spartan Stadium. Make it a home game for Harbaugh & Co.
Broadcast team made it sounds like these were what he cut up. They had to switch to the 80s throwbacks because he destroyed so many of the collared jerseys.
Every time I've tried brisket it has been an abject failure. Pretty dialed in on the pork butts though. Much more forgiving.
On the topic of BBQ...there is a food truck in Ann Arbor that I was recently introduced to called Ricewood BBQ and it is awesome. Best BBQ I've had in A2 by a longshot. Parked behind Morgan and York on Packard south of Stadium.
Played there on Sunday. Course is in great shape but the old clubhouse has been demolished and the course layout is changed for the year. Temporary clubhouse is on the south side of the course and the entrance is at the tennis center on State St. #1 is the old #12 (long par 3). After old #18 you play, #10, #11, then old #6-#9 and the closing holes are #1-#4.
Yeah. The game itself was great. Columbus is just an incredibly unwelcoming place. The thing I remember most is just how much trash was strewn all over the place, like, everywhere. The bootleg happened in the endzone opposite where I was sitting. That '00 season was just such a disappointment for the most part. That game they actually lived up to the hype/potential.
Definitely regret not going to Pasadena in 2005 & 2006. Especially the Texas game.
Same here. The only one that I would truly consider a bucket list item is going to the Rose Bowl Game with Michigan playing in it. I'd also love to go to the Sugar Bowl just because I think New Orleans is an awesome city and would be a blast to pregame in the French Quarter.
I've been to a bunch of stadiums and the top experience was proabably UM @ Notre Dame in 2006. Obviously, my favorable opinion was molded in-part by the fact that Michigan blew the doors off the Irish that day. Prior to the Brandon era abasement of the gameday experience at the Big House, Notre Dame was the only place I've been to that had purist tradition like Michigan's (no piped in music, no ads, no big screen). And their fans were very hospitable. Contrast that to Ohio State which was basically a dumpster fire outside the stadium where you need to tread carefully if you choose to wear Maize & Blue. Their drunken mouthbreather fans will be in your grill pretty much nonstop. I was there for the game in your avatar and doubt I will ever go back. I did sing the Victors on the concourse in the Horseshoe with a few hundred other Michigan fans after that win so that was pretty awesome.
In the south I've been to UGA, GT, UF, UT, UK, Bama, Auburn, & Clemson. Clemson & Auburn were the loudest. UGA best tailgating. Never made it to LSU but they'd be on the top of my list of SEC places I haven't visited.
Congrats!! I'm hanging out with my 10 week old son right now so I was in your shoes not too long ago. Here are some random thoughts:
- Diapers: Pampers Swaddlers are the best diapers. Don't stock up too much on the newborn size. My baby was in the size 1's after about 4 weeks and he's not an outlier as far as size.
- Sleep: My wife and I have been incredibily lucky as far as our son's sleep habits. He's been sleeping through the night (11:00pm - 6:00am) since he was two weeks old. I'm sure it's just him, but I'll share our sleep routine just in case it is having an impact that may be reproducible. Last nursing right before bedtime, swaddle him, sleep on his back, in a bassinet right next to our bed, and we have two ambient noise sound machines running all night.
- Classes: I went to a few Daddy boot camp type classes. Personally, I found them to be a waste of time. Everything they talk about in the classes is available online and much on youtube. Learn the "Five S's" from the Happiest Baby on the Block. It's not perfect but it works pretty dag-gone well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eK4O9N3DjJM
- Books: By far the best book I read is Brain Rules For Baby: How to Raise a Smart & Happy Child From Zero to Five http://www.amazon.com/Brain-Rules-Baby-Raise-Smart/dp/0979777763. It's an eveidence-based book rooted in real research in a variety of relevant sciences. All of the recommendations/methods in the book have been validated and published in peer-reviewed journals in the cognitive, behavioral science, etc. It was an easy, interesting read and most of the other baby books I have read are either redundant or speculative.
- Clothes: Buy the onesies that have a zipper, buttons are a pain. Carter's makes really nice stuff.
- Childbirth: In retrospect, my wife regretted not doing a c-section from the outset. She was in labor for 24 hours and had two separte push sessions before deciding to just do the c/s. Her recovery was a pretty easy process for her and her incision has healed very nicely.
The quotes in that article sound like he is all but a lock to UGA. Compare those to the quotes UM insiders are getting and it just doesn't sound promising at all.
What most people think of when referring to "reddit style" is that the Highest rated (net total of up & down votes) comment becomes the top comment. Same is true for replies to comments. Topics are also sorted using a similar method so active threads appear at the top of the board/frontpage/subreddit. Good posts/comments appear the top, bad/troll posts appear at the bottom and essentially out-of-sight. There is also the option to sort topics/comments with the newest post appearing at the top (or bottom).
There was a segment on College Gameday this morning about the final play. Dantanio is quoted in the segment "We were gonna put all eleven up and go for it. If we roughed him, hey, we roughed him".
Blame Blake? How about some blame on the coaching staff? MSU had nobody back to return the punt and ten defenders on the LOS on the punt block call. Michigan had two gunners, and before the snap was even botched, five Michigan players were downfield without a single MSU defender in front of them. Max protect punt should have been the call. The coaching staff shares an equal or larger share of the blame for not having the right play call in and putting O'Neill in position to win the game on what should have been a routine scenario. This is the analog to calling a three man rush on the Kordell Stewart play.
Can't expect to win a game when you only pick up ten first downs. Wish Peppers had seen a few more touches on offense, could have been the difference we needed.
John Smoltz. Never played for State but he's a fan and clearly could/would have if he had played college baseball. He is to MSU what Jeter is to UM. Favorite pitcher of the 90s and seems like a genuinely good dude.
I have no graphic design skills but will defer to someone who does. Use this image, change "America" to "Nobody" and obviously change color scheme to Maize & Blue. Perhaps change the DD to block M. This needs to happen.

The pinnacle of the Murderwolf meme would be for Corso to don that as the pick em headgear on College Gameday Saturday in Columbus.
Does such headgear exist? Does someone in the Mgoblog community have the skill set to construct it?
Corso dons…
Headgear Idea:
Corso dons the Murderwolf.
This must happen.
Better yet, disperse their band members in stranded-single seats throughout the stadium

+1 on the mushrooms. They absorb that flavor like no other. Don't forget the whole garlic cloves too.
