OT: Thursday night drinking thread & Michigan Beers
To kick off the night's drinking thread, I thought I'd share my recent beer drinking story.
I got a pretty neat birthday gift back in December--my girlfriend went to 8 Degrees Plato Beer Co in Ferndale, MI and picked out 25 beers from Michigan to celebrate my 25th birthday.
Neither of us are beer aficionados by any stretch, so many of the beers were new to me. We split one of the beers between us about every other night for the last month and a half and recently finished them all. List of the 25 beers in order that we tried them, with my favorite ten bolded and ones I hadn't tried before italicized:
Full Circle
North Peak's American Wheat IPA
Bell's Christmas Ale
Good Humans
Jaw Jacker
Mayan Mocha Stout
How Now Brown Cow
Phat Abbot Ale
Bell's Cherry Stout
Greenbush White winter ale
Atwater's Purple Gang Pilsner
1825
Loch Down
North Peak's Chocolate Stout
Bell's Midwestern Pale Ale
Bell's Two Hearted
Bean Flicker
Crooked Tree IPA
Closure Ale
Greenbush IPA
Atwater's Dirty Blonde
North Peak's IPA
Bell's Third Coast
Huma Lupa Licious
Oberon
-----------
Some thoughts: I really like beer. Also, I had no taste for IPAs until I tried all these beers. I still can't get behind Huma Lupa, but maybe with time.
So, MGoFriends, what's on tap?

Don't drink during the week.
It is going below zero here in Maryland...would have a nice tumbler of Laphroaig 18 neat.

Had a Prairie Limo TInt and now drinking a Black Mesa ES-ESB. Imperial ESB aged in Cognac barrels. Pretty solid.

Cool that you're getting into it, but to be completely honest, the ten you bolded are probably ten of my least favorite on the list

I'm also a huge Third Coast Old Ale fan, but I get that barleywines aren't for everybody.

Watching NASCAR drinking whiskey and Coke Zero. Personally, I love IPAs and red ales. On rare occasions, I love enjoying a good mead.

Saw a few good reviews. Pretty decent given the price. Flavor is light on the front end but kicks in and linger for a minute.

well its so cold that the wine had to be brought in from the garage so it wouldn't explode like our lone bottle of pop did.
-26.3 and still dropping. not including wind chill. baby its cold outside, the livestock didn't even leave the barn today!

and it's warmed up to -25.4 since my post. sunday night we were playing hockey outside with most of my kids and 5 more kids who i coach for football and wrestling and it was -24. i know it sounds weird, but if there's no wind, the temp just isn't that big of a deal. the guy above with the very funny post about the 9th level of hades, really, i missed winter when i lived in socal and i'm not complaining its more of a fun, novelty thing. my biggest complaint is that the chickens are still laying eggs, but its so cold that the eggs are splitting before the kids gather them.

I find it difficult to drink many IPAs. Not because they're terrible, but because once you get accustomed to the headys, HF's, zombie dusts, and Plinys, everything else just taste bland.
I've noticed that ESBs are the ones that truly given my palate new outlooks. Although, at the end of the day I will always reach for a barrel aged stout.
