Can a student athlete call his own press conference without the school being involved? I would understand if he was going pro - at that point, he is officially severing ties with the school and can operate independently. But it's hard to imagine a scenario where Urban Meyer is behind this type of thing. I could see the school preferring to make the official statement without this type of show.

Cannot understand the vitriol against the kid deciding he wasn't ready for the League and staying another year.  Seems mature and reasonable...especially now that late first round or second round guys don't get the HUGE money they used to and he could be washed up by the time his rookie contract is concluding.

MORE IMPORTANTLY, this is great for us.  Imagine Tebow and Cam Newton on the same Urbs team.  Oh, oh, trouble in paradise.  I forsee major team chemistry issues as the ultimate QB controversy divides OSU into Braxton, Jones and Baxter fractions...ol Urbs may have to retire mid-season just trying to cope with who gets the free tatoos first!  My advice?  Get some popcorn, butter and salt it up real nice and enjoy the implosion, er the Show!!

He's got no chance of playing quarterback in the NFL. He's Logan Thomas or Tim Tebow without the ballyhoo. He can't look off from his first read, and his primary skill to an offense is as a runner. So unless an NFL team is willing to draft him and go all out running a college offense with the QB as a prime ball carrier, he's just not cut out for it.

He'll get drafted, be stuck as a back up or third stringer, maybe be occasionally used in a wild cat package, and then cut. I think I'd rather enjoy the fame of being a quarterback for one of the premier programs in college football where you'll be treated like a god while you can. Ask Tommie Frazier or Eric Crouch if it was worth staying versus leaving early.

He never comes off his first read on a pass. EVER. But that's fine in college and in Urban's offense because Urban's offense is: 1. Run 2. Screen 3. Bomb. He keeps the defense on their toes with his running ability, and he definitely has the cannon to stretch the defense deep.

So did Tebow, and he was garbage in the NFL.

How many times do we have to see Urban's offense make successful college quarterbacks out of excellent athletes with questionable passing ability before we stop annointing each one as a possible NFL QB? Urban Meyer does not prepare QBs for the NFL and that's fine, because he sure wins a lot of games with them. And they don't give you any extra wins on your record if your QBs end up tearing up the NFL when they leave.

He strikes me as a good kid who has matured a lot. But he would have been lambasted on this board no matter what his decision was, no matter how he delivered it. Jones is matruing, while, if this board is any indication, Michigan fans are giong in the opposite direction.

He's not going to say he's really comfortable at school and having tons of fun, and perhaps not confident that he is ready for the NFL. He isn't ready as a Qb. So he says he is getting his degree, which is a typical non scholar, athlete degree which is common at many campuses including ours. It is a big deal to some inner city kids who may be the first in their family to do so.

It's clearly not a good business decision, but he got advice from his family to stay and enjoy being the big man on campus and polish his skills. Some NFL team will pay him big $ next year (the Browns, who resemble the Millen led Lions, will need a replacement to Johnny football).

I would take him on our team any day of the week. That said Urbs greatest coaching job may be keeping these three guys happy.

btw we will be ready when OSU comes north regardless of who is the Qb.
