CC: MGoFish Compiles Harbaugh December Rumors--Pro JH to UM

I've generally viewed Harbaugh as a 'pie-in-the-sky' candidate. Knowing nothing besides what I read, I thought that Jim's competitiveness would keep him in the NFL. But the argument that comes through in the link is:

  • JH would be getting crazy money (8 M!). That's more than anyone at any level of football.
  • JH hurts when Michigan hurts.
  • JH is young enough to return to the NFL after righting the ship.
  • JH wants Brady to be treated with dignity. Brady is getting that treatment.

I don't think any of this proves anything. But the smoke is building, and it's thicker than I first believed.

I have heard from a former UofM starting running back (who is not directly involved with the coaching search, but is still very connected with those who are...so take it for what it's worth), that the theoretical offer to our theoretical top candidate would be 8 million per year for TEN years. I have heard the 8 million thrown around, so o think there is some validity to that. This was the first I had heard though of the length of the contract. Again, take it for what it is worth, but definitely interesting and would be the biggest contract in all of football coaching (and I believe the largest coaching contract in all of American sports).

JH has already proven he can coach at the NFL level.  What owner wouldn't hire him outside of NE, Baltimore or maybe Seattle?  That includes the SF ownership who got 3 great years of coaching out of him.  Sure, JH may want that SB ring, but there is plenty of time for him to do that.

When will the opportunity to coach Michigan back to B1G and then college playoffs come again?  It may not.  If Michigan hires somebody who gets them successful on the field again, what are the chances he'll get fired?

I think if JH has any desire to coach at Michigan he must know that now is the perfect time to do this and it might be the last perfect time for him to do this.

So, yes, he can come to Michigan, be our football savior and then sometime in the future he can return to the NFL to work to get his SB ring.

I am a die hard Michigan fan and would love it if Harbaugh came back.  The one thing that I'm guessing is being undervalued here is where Jim and his wife want to live.  No amount of rational analysis of numbers, timeline, etc can help clarify what is a personal choice.  Yes he would be getting crazy money but (not to sound rude to my Midwestern friends) he would have to move back to Michigan.  For people who live there it's seen as a non-issue.  For others it is seen as a big negative.

As someone who attended the school from out of state from a cold weather 4 seasons type of place, I was used to the tougher weather.  Now I live out in California and I don't ever see myself leaving.  Yes the high salary would be something for Harbaugh to consider BUT unless people have lived here in CA (and assuming they liked it), people may not understand how many people would rather make less and pay more for housing just to simply remain in California.  Staying in California for people who like it here carries a real yet intangible value.
