Report: Michigan Reaching Out To Bates, Manuel
Manuel, Bates
Per Coaching Search's Pete Roussel:
A source has informed CoachingSearch.com that Michigan has gauged the interest of UConn director of athletics Warde Manuel and Boston College athletic director Brad Bates about their interest in the same position at Michigan.
UPDATE: John U Bacon says nope.
FYI, my proverbial "well placed sources" tell me the reports of UM starting a search for a new AD (Bates, Manual, etc.) are NOT true. FWIW.

Sorry for getting anyone's hopes up.

then maybe Bacon's sources wouldn't necessarily know about it. I for one, am trying to remain cautiously optimistic.

I dunno, I think going AWOL during a media firestorm is exactly what I'd expect out of an arrogant guy like DB. Arrogant people do not like to be confronted with evidence that they might not be all that and a bag of chips. Brandon had no problem being front and center during the stretching firestorm because he could feel like the guy sailing in to save the day.

It is eerily quiet. There's also the chance that he's laying low to hide and let it pass.
Anyone willing to bet a Coke on who goes first -- Brandon or Hoke?

It makes sense to me that Bacon's sources would certainly not confirm these rumors even if they are true.

I've been wondering why Jeff Long of Arkansas hasn't been mentioned, because he really has a more impressive career as an AD than either Manuel or Bates and is going to be the chair of the playoff selection committee. But it turns out he went to high school with Hoke and also overlapped with Hoke at Michigan:

So I can see how he might not be the best hire right now or might not be interested in the job. Hope this rumor has some truth to it and we see some changes for the better being made in the AD.

I'm not so sure Turner Gill could be described as a "great hire." In his 4 years at Buffalo his teams went 2-10, 5-7, 7-5, and 5-7. Kansas then hired him, but he didn't work out there (which, I don't think should be held against him). He's currently HC at football powerhouse Liberty University.

For what it's worth, Jim Calhoun basically hired Ollie, then Ollie hired himself when he won the title.
