Garrick Roemer (mens track) commits suicide
I am uncertain about posting reddit as a source but a fellow track team member on their is reporting Garrick passed away yesterday and asks for everyone's thoughts an prayers. Horrible, horrible circumstance.
A search for his name on twitter leads to multiple UM students accounts (including Mitch McGary) expressing their condolences throughout the day, as far as confirmation goes sadly. (Nothing on mgoblue as of yet.)
Heart goes out to all affected . . . Terrible loss.
This is just terrible. What a huge loss for his family and friends.
Terrible. Keep this kid's family and friends in your thoughts. Mental health is important people, if anyone is having trouble go talk to someone - a little can go a long way.
Too young.
The recent tweets on his twitter are very eerie.
My condolences to those who knew him
That's awful. Thoughts and prayers to his family as well as the track team.
To all friends and family
This really hits home I had a teamate do the same thing a year and a half ago.
May you finally be at peace.
for graduate school actually had a recent rash of suicides over the Fall semester, and many people were obviously very upset. In the aftermath, they encouraged anyone who felt like they were in a similar situation to go to CAPS, etc., but one of the best pieces I read about the situation said that basically, CAPS is a valuable resource for people who need it, but honestly, the best thing we can do is be there for our fellow human beings.
Many people kill themselves because they feel utterly alone, like they have no one to turn to when they're upset, or even when something annoying or stupid happens and they just want to talk about it. So many people just get caught up in their own lives, and can't imagine that other people have problems, or can feel upset or alone. Sometimes all people need is a friend to talk to, and it can make all the difference.
Reminds me of that Penn track student who committed suicide a few months ago. That's just way too young to take such a drastic action. How sad.
Maybe you should be ashamed for putting so much focus on your moral superiority instead of the main topic.
Obviously it's a different tone. One death is a young student in a community that most of us are intimately familiar with who took his own life, and the other is an anonymous guy thousands of miles away who was killed by a toilet. You can pretend like the reactions to those things should be the same, but they never will be. The sooner you accept that and stop hijacking threads to assert your righteousness, the better.
But I'd encourage folks to keep in mind the issue at hand, and to keep this thread civil for the sake of the people with heavy hearts who may read it.
Wait, you mean to tell me that people don't have the same level of caring for every death around the world? That is repulsive! Like me, you must be in constant mourning given the 150,000 people who die every day.
Holy... thoughts are with his family, his friends, and his teammates.
So sad, especially for someone so young.
My sympathies to the family and friends.
Someone posted exactly what happens to you over time when you OD. I wish there was a way to get that in front of everyone considering trying to do this. There is no good way to go about it but what you experience this way is terrible.
Tthere is no good way to do this. Get help for yourself. No matter how bad things get you are loved and there are people who care tremendously about you. Suicide is not the answer.
This is very sad news. Thoughts and prayers to his family, friends, and teammates. Hearbreaking news.
Is this really an appropriate subject for discussion board fodder?
Yes
We are not just nameless, faceless Michigan sports fanatics on the internet. We are all people too, and in one way or another, this story has hit close to home for many of us. Whether it does because of how much we love this university and all its student athletes, because you are college aged, because you are or know someone who is or was struggling with depression, because you have a (near) college aged kid, or because you simply value human life, this is a relevant topic.
As long as people respond appropiately and use this thread to pay their respects and bring attention to depression and suicide awareness, I see no reason why it should not be here.
You never know who could be reading this and thinking terrible thoughts about ending their life. A thread about how tragic and unnecessary this is could be helpful to even one person, and that's all worth it.
I guess I'm just looking at it from a different perspective - if I was a family member I wouldn't really be thrilled with people discussing it on a sports message board. I see your point though.
thoughts. The reddit string was informative to read as a parent. It's easy to get caught up in this world we live in that is ultra-competitive and everything seems to be out in the open via the social network. I hope those of us who parent, coach, teach, etc. let these terrific young kids know they are special and loved no matter what they achieve or what mistakes they may make in life. Just very sad right now.
Godspeed Garrick... Prayers for his family.
Very sad. Way, way too soon. RIP
Terrible loss. Condolensces to his family.
