Jon Jansen interviews Coach Gattis on his podcast "In The Trenches".

Some select quotes to wet your whistle:

"It's going to be a total offense"

"It's going to be a group effort"

Michigan has all the pieces of the puzzle to put it together (paraphrase)

Offense will utilize RPO, spread and other schemes based on personnel (paraphrase)

Rock touches will be spread around and balanced (paraphrase)

In previous offseasons, I don't remember ever hearing anything as specific or committal (eg "we're gonna run more RPO"). So I'm not sure where the "I'VE HEARD THAT BEFORE" is originating.

Sure, Gattis gave us some platitudes. But I think there is a nod to a different or evolved offensive philosophy. Whereas, I can't recall Pep, Drevno, Harbaugh or (going back) Nussmeir(sp?) et, al, ever saying "WE'RE GONNA OPEN IT UP THIS YEAR!!"

Yeah, look at All the TEs that were brought in this year :)  I have heard smatterings, whisperings from time to time of Schoonmaker having very good speed and advancing well...another size mismatch to take advantage of.

Otherwise, I feel good about getting guys in space-which includes that beast that is Charbonnet. It will be a joy to see the terror in the eyes of the opponent's secondary when he breaks loose and heads their way-I've been there done that...from the "terror" side.

Well, he sounds good.  Who knows whether that's a sign of anything, but it's a start.

My* two cents: get DPJ the ball in space as often as possible.

*Long-time blog members will recall that I have been the offensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers since 1937, when I was appointed to the position by President Roosevelt.

Really enjoyed that podcast and believe the OP actually undersold what Gattis said a bit.

He talked about transforming the offense like they did at Alabama and said they would only be keeping common terminology and certain elements of the existing offense.

Also said it was going to be "personnel driven" (said that several times) with a focus on getting the ball in playmakers' hands.

The quote about balance was more about the ability to use multiple playmakers when situation dictates, from my read of it.  It was not about run/pass ratio.

From my perspective, this interview was much more informative than the "Attack Each Day" version.  This interview makes it crystal clear that Gattis is going to radically change the offense (not tweak) and that it will be match-up driven going forward.  It's worth a listen and the quotes don't do it justice.

This ^^^^ is absolutely 100% what I took from the interview as well.

I think Harbaugh's philosophy was more along the lines of fitting the players into the identity, while Gattis is talking about shaping the identity around what the most dynamic players do the best, and then implementing that based upon the situation.  Further, I think Gattis is going to use some sort of "touch chart" like people talked about, to make sure that he's working the ball around between the talent.  Again, it's not so much what we want to do, but more with whom do we want to do it.

Personally, I think Gattis's words should give the Michigan fanbase a great deal of comfort in that they indicate the level of Harbaugh's self awareness and willingness to make necessary changes.  Now, I know many are going to stand on, "I'll believe it when I see it ..." and that is fair.  But equally as fair is that this is Michigan's first OC under Harbaugh, and the first time we really seen and heard a move in this direction.  There were some whispers and rumors last season, but nothing this concrete.

We should all be very excited, I think.

I believe you are (too) correct in your assessment that Harbaugh has forced players into his scheme excessively...I believe this has been a weakness. I surely like and agree with a coaching philosophy that schemes to put your best players in the best position to succeed. That is indeed the best path to winning.
