The reason Matthews had a straight shot to the baseline is because they're worried about Big John dropping another 3 on their heads. If you move to cover the drive, you're giving the big boy an opening.

Basketball is a game of runs; it's unrealistic to expect an entire game without the opponent winning a few minutes.
Sure, Michigan played poorly for awhile there, but I really like their response.
Instead of hoisting up 3's, they started attacking the basket. That turned things right around.
Michigan is a damn good team, and is playing a good game, yet again.

Yep. Didn't say they weren't. Was critiquing the characterization that NW had only cut the deficit from 18 to 16 (as opposed to from 24 to 13). Over the first 8-9 minutes of the half, the offense struggled.
