How in the world did the refs miss the call when Hidgon got facemasked?

Higdon was called for a hold on a play he was tackled on as a decoy ball carrier this year, that should answer your question.

The initial contact was to his shoulder and twisted him around; secondary contact might have gotten the mask but I couldn't tell. It wasn't clear to me on replay (and freeze-frame advance watching from home) that it did, anyway, although I was convinced live that he had been.

Who else had the friggin' wind knocked out of them when Gentry was called for a hold on Black's TD? I love Gentry but that dude needs to start listening to Warriner when he teaches assignments and blocking. The TE's whiffed a few times. Making the blocks would've resulted in yards and more points. It may sound like bitching and whining but it's details like this that will burn us against the CFP contenders.

IFF the passing game can continue to progress and incorporate more creativity, then we have a chance to win it all.
Otherwise we are stuck with just a very good chance of winning the B1G.

great to see Evans have a productive game. I know blacks TD got called back, but damn, that was great to see.

One nit pick I would bring up is TE blocking. Our TE's quite frequently get pushed around or just make bad blocks. I don't know if they can be coached up a little more or if it's a physical limitation.

Remember, PSU's DEs are really good. That was the big question about the line going into the game. TEs were good in pass blocking, Gemtry had a hard time in run blocking because he struggled with leverage.

Glad I'm not the only one. Watch it again, there are few really embarrassing blocks by our TE's in this one.

Agree--they're not blocky-catchy. Just catchy.

I'm so happy to be wrong.
This offense is progressing and looks great. Ask yourselves how many times we could have hit that deep ball to Black. It was probably there most of the game. Sure, there were some shit calls and the offensive explosiveness is clearly being held back in favor of suffocation, but it's there. And it'll need to be against OSU. That's a game where the ball-control gameplan may stutter and we'll need to score points. Seems like we can.
The offense is certainly better than LSU. We belong in the top 4.

Read the first twenty posts. Disappointed. That O Line is excellent.

Read Brian's preview. Nailed it.

The blocked kick was a great play by the PSU player - he took a hop/short jump between two blockers without tripping or losing speed and basically appeared in the flight path. I don't see anything wrong with Nordin there.

After years of brutal offense with no identity and confidence, we finally have an offense that knows what it wants to do. It doesn't execute 100% of the time but it wears defenses down by being persistent and physical.

Really can’t complain. They were methodical, punishing, and didn’t make mistakes.
There were some missed opportunities earlier in the game that could cost them if they don’t convert them against a better team. Like an OSU or a playoff team if they get that far. But that’s just nitpicking, really. You have to like what you see.
I do feel bad that Black’s TD got called back, but I doubt anyone felt worse about that than Gentry did.

There's a thread above about the offense stalling in 30-45 yard range in first half of the game. We all know that Nordin is having a slump so ending FGs are not a give-me. Some above said the conservative play calling in the first half is by design. Curious if anyone knows whether Harbaugh employed a similar strategy at Stanford or 49ers?

Maybe someone should start a Pep appreciation thread
