I doubt we have a chance with the Alabama kids but some of the out-of-staters may be up for grabs. I remember Bo Scarbrough being on Michigan's radar and he's yet to take his official visit.

From the thread earlier with the three Texas decommits, two of those guys were from the state of Texas. If his recruiting is as good as advertised, than any of these guys could be in play.

That's amazing (and impressive).
And just to be fair I will now post all the names of the Michigan recruits where Borges was considered to be the lead recruiter so we can properly evaluate how many of our current commits are "at risk".

This always seemed a little odd to me. I rarely heard stories of him on the road, so I wasn't sure if the area recruiters would get the recruits on campus and Borges would fill the role as the closer for offensive position players, or what.
Further reason to feel better about our coaching staff going forward.
Having said (um...written) that, I wish Al and his family all the luck in the world.

That's not exactly fair to Borges. He was the guy who ran the ship in Ann Arbor if other coaches were on the road.

To be fair 3 plane tickets are 3 times more expensive than 1 plane ticket.

I'm guessing Mrs. Nussmeier isn't exactly hating the news either now that her man just got PAID!
And thank you. That's nice of you to say that.
January 8th, 2014 at 11:46 PM ^
yeah man, you had a few meltdowns in the recent past
January 8th, 2014 at 11:48 PM ^
Not true.
January 8th, 2014 at 11:32 PM ^
seemed pretty upset about Borges getting canned, FWIW.
January 8th, 2014 at 11:40 PM ^
All kidding aside I did see that. And while my guess is he'll be fine now that he sees who's replaced Al there does exist the possibility we could lose him if, by some wierd chance, he though his career would be helped somehow by Borges.
But I got to tell you if you gave me the choice of Borges with Harris next year or Nussmeier without Harris I'd take the latter each and every time.

January 9th, 2014 at 12:13 AM ^
He's gone IMO, but the thing is, he's got another year. If we can show improvement in the run game AND Nuss can strike up a good relationship with him. We're fine.
If not, at least we have an OC that recruits. I'm sure there are other RBs as much as I want Harris in that class.
January 9th, 2014 at 12:17 AM ^
What? There is absolutely no evidence to suggest he's gone. The kid liked Borges, but that wasn't the only thing he liked about Michigan. He's a lifelong fan. Don't rain on the 2014 parade. I can't take anymore baseless pessimism.
January 9th, 2014 at 12:46 AM ^
January 9th, 2014 at 12:18 AM ^
He's gone? He's still committed. Sure, he might be bummed Borges left, but he grew up a Michigan fan and we just hired Alabama's offensive coordinator who was quite friendly to RBs. I doubt he's too pissed about running Alabama's offense while playing for his childhood favorite.
January 9th, 2014 at 12:42 AM ^
It's my opinion that he was on the fence, he was a Borges guy and this is gonna push him away.
I hope I'm gone 150%, I have no problem admitting that I was wrong.
But I just think he's been trending away from Michigan for weeks and this is going to continue that.
Not fact whatsoever, just MY opinion.
It's also MY opinion that we should keep 50% of Borges' playbook. I think we should call the plays 100% different. But the design, formation, etc. I like some if not a lot of it.
But again, just my opinion. That's all.
January 9th, 2014 at 12:45 AM ^
That's fair. I know Harris had a connection to Borges, but I doubt he had the impact on him you're suggesting. Harris was rumored to be leaning away from his commitment before today, so he wasn't too in love with Borges. I would think that improved performance would at least make up for his relationship with Borges. And who knows, he and his coach might like Nussmeier even more once they get to know him.

January 9th, 2014 at 9:05 AM ^
but what if he was leaning away because of the product on the field (not much of a stretch)? That would mean this move could solidify his commitment again. My money is on this because, above all else, he has been a Michigan fan since forever.

January 9th, 2014 at 12:16 AM ^
Harris may have liked Borges, but look at the running backs Nussmeier has coached. Richardson, Lacey, Yeldon, etc. I doubt Harris decommits.
January 9th, 2014 at 12:22 AM ^
And if he does, I bet we find another top RB who wants to jump on board with that (especially if we don't get one in this class).
How about Jeff Jones? Nuss will be here in time for his official visit. Drop some names, flash for national championship ring, switch his commit, badda boom, badda bing.
January 9th, 2014 at 12:12 AM ^
I completely agree with your last paragraph. Getting a very good OC will do as more than a 5-star RB. Like getting us other 5-star running backs, for starters.
January 9th, 2014 at 12:19 PM ^
could take 2 and 3 star players and make them play like 4 and 5 star players. That is the true benefit of a good coordinator.

Certainly this isn't a surprise anymore, is it? Same old song and dance we've seen time and time again. Not enough attention at home, illusions of grandeur or peer pressure so he "re-opens" his recruitment, drops commitment to his self-proclaimed "dream school since he was a kid", and in comes the freakshow of sleazebag coaches, like sharks that smell blood in the water, trolling Borges and rubbing their magic snake oil everywhere.
If this kid only committed to Michigan because of Borges he must be blind, dumb, and/or a liar after this past season. I surmise he was just looking for an excuse to decommit and this is the perfect scenario. Big picture, if this kid's commitment is a casualty for our team to upgrade from Uncle Fester to Nuss, fuck it, I'm cool with that. THE TEAM THE TEAM THE TEAM

Thank you Magnum. I look at it this way - while i may have been one of the most vocal and consistently critical anti-Borges posters around here I certainly must've been speaking for that silent majority Brian wrote about during the great purge given the absolute euphoria we seem to be collectively experiencing.
Do you see anybody posting anything on any thread that even looks remotely sad or upset by this news? Anything? I mean I dont' think we've been this united or happy about our football team since 97!

Space Coyote post since the news. Maybe he actually IS Al Borges.

But Space Coyote was posting defenses of plays during the ga....oh, that would explain a lot.

I think Borges could have still worked out decently, and I gave what I thought were reasons why that was. But I always reserved judgement for those within the program that have much more evidence than any of us. I had a feeling someone on the offense was going to fall on the sword. I didn't expect Borges would be let go, but I have faith that if the staff thought it was best for the program, then it was. Hopefully the next guy can right the ship and Michigan can be better on offense. |
January 9th, 2014 at 12:28 PM ^
Leave the guy alone. He poured his heart, soul and fingertips into a baseless defense of Bye Bye Borges. If he truly believed what he wrote, who are you to judge him? His unnecessarily wordy and overly descriptive posts were applauded by many who will now pretend they never knew him. My feelings for CC are a matter of public record. I hoped he would go away but now miss him. Scanning for his posts gave me purpose. I now feel empty.
Come back Space Coyote.
Just pretend it was a massive typo, blame it on your phone or a late night.
Take up a new cause. Is the earth really a sphere?
Was it gravity that caused Newtons apple-cranial collision, or was it positioning and tree location?
Seriously, you added so much more to the board than the gif posting/one liner/mutual admiration crowd whose"thoughts" are so easily skipped over. I look forward to your next cause.

I know you were being sarcastic but I've read reports that Damien Harris was very close to him and he is shocked. I think Hoke was likely involved also so who knows if this will affect things. He appeared to be reassessing things regardless and I assume it could have been some lack of communication from Borges knowing this is coming. It will be important to try to retain him. He's also talks frequently with the quarterback recruits so the 2015 quarterback situation could be affected. Not sure about others.
Hopefully knowing the name of the replacement quickly will help minimize damage.

As a non-football guy, I believe firmly developing and (properly) utilizing those players are more important than their star rankings.

Now if only we could beat our rivals and develop players. We are 1/3 of the way there, but this is looking promising. I never thought Brady would have done this. BALLS.....my friend.
