Beckmann's successor?

Submitted by allinforM on

In Angelique's story today about Frank Beckmann's last game, he says of his successor in the booth:

"I hope they give it to (Doug) Karsch. He knows the game inside and out. He's passionate about it. He knows Michigan so well. I have no say in it. Nobody's asked me, and that's how it should be."

At first, this felt like one of DB's trial balloons, but it is probably only him going to bat for a colleague.

Can't say if he would be good or not, but I would be worried about the call that goes: "And the 50-yard field goal attempt is on its way ... and I'll tell you at 12:50 if it was good or not."

Is he still doing his Ufer on radio call-ins? He was my favorite caller on WTKA when I lived in town. Beautiful stuff.
Favorite moment was when a UNH media guy of some sort was in studio to discuss a Michigan-UNH hockey game with Fithian. He took a passing swipe at Michigan's helmets. Dennis from OC calls, Fithian brings him on, and with no introduction, warning, or context launches into a 30-second Ufer rant against the guest, Ufer-bashing his critique of the Meeeeeeshigan helmets. And then he hung up.
The ultimate drive--by Ufer attack. The UNH guy had no idea what was going on. Magnificent.

Never thought of Doug but I like the idea of him getting the job. Life long Michigan fan grew up in A2 and has the reverence for the job don't know if he has the skills for the job.  My first choice is Gus Johnson also grew up a Michigan fan and seems like he takes any job he's offered.  He'd be expensive but worth it.

I agreed with someone else's suggestion of Mark Champion above. The other guy that I think is worth a look is Ben Holden. Good voice, does a good job with PBP, would be a great voice of Michigan for years.

Larry Henry?

He was Michigan's basketball announcer in the late 80's - early 90's. If memory serves, he was the announcer when when Biakabutuka ran through Ohio for 313.

He also did some work for the Pistons and Lions.

I remember him being pretty good, especially for basketball.

Larry Henry was absolutely phenomenal. Far better than Beckmann IMO.

He was on WWJ but got canned five years ago. Consider the source, but Gregg Henson (yes, REALLY consider that source) said that he has a nasty demeanor and people don't want to work with him.

Personally, I'm shocked that he didn't go national after the Fab Five era. He was that good.

Karsch has almost no play-by-play experience in his career, so I don't see how it could be him. I agree with other posters above that Shepherd is not ready. He is lucky to have the basketball gig IMO.

play by play by Sam Webb and a historical perspective by John U Bacon, down on the field Jamie Morris with Doug Karsch.
