George Walden, Eurosport Announcer Extraordinaire
For those of us watching the Euro-stream of the game today, it was probably the most epic play-by-play ever. Let's all give him some love on Facebook.
October 6th, 2012 at 7:08 PM ^
Amen. Nice to have someone not think that both teams on are BCS championship worthy.
Call the game as it is.
October 6th, 2012 at 7:20 PM ^
"Purdue is NOT ready for the primetime yet".
Can't really argue with that...
October 6th, 2012 at 7:09 PM ^
With tears in my eyes, and a smile on my face; George, you made that the best Michigan game ever to listen to.
God bless you and your insights to college football. I'm so glad you were once a QB so you had credibility with your thoughts.
Can't wait to listen again next week.
October 6th, 2012 at 7:10 PM ^
Please someone tell me they captured that video stream.
October 6th, 2012 at 7:11 PM ^
I didn't start the Euro-feed until the second half. One can only imagine what insights and catch-phrases were missed from the first....
October 6th, 2012 at 7:12 PM ^
The four minute narrative of how the boilermakers got their nickname... priceless.
October 6th, 2012 at 7:14 PM ^
I must be honest... I never knew they were once the Pumpkin Chuckers. George taught me something today.
October 6th, 2012 at 7:16 PM ^
How about the Rail-splitters? So full of knowledge...
October 6th, 2012 at 7:13 PM ^
-His complete and utter shock and amazement that Gibbons's first FG hit the crossbar, as if this is something that has never happened before.
-His comment that the 49ers's use of Kaepernick on the option "made the Jets look stupid since they have Tebow."
-The fact that he claimed that he himself used to play QB, despite the fact that he is evidently completely unfamiliar with the game of football.
October 6th, 2012 at 11:51 PM ^
he was utterly amazed because he had just said in passing that the kick was straight down the middle. loved it.
October 6th, 2012 at 7:13 PM ^
"Because he doesn't have laces in his shoes...."
Thx George.
October 6th, 2012 at 7:16 PM ^
His solo work on that game might be the best monologue of the 21st century
October 6th, 2012 at 7:16 PM ^
can someone please provide the link to this stream so we can listen to him next week? also if there is a way for us to listen to this past game? PLZ K THX
October 6th, 2012 at 7:20 PM ^
Eurosport needs to be the official MGoBlog way to watch Michigan Football now
October 6th, 2012 at 9:47 PM ^
Amen to that. I love Eurosport
October 6th, 2012 at 7:22 PM ^
... I agree he was not a good commentator, I think linking to his personal Facebook page is rather juvenile.
October 6th, 2012 at 7:26 PM ^
Wait.... You agree with what? I actually thought he was the greatest commentator of all time.... Especially for this particular game..... If it's innapropriate to link to his FB.... I'll take it down...
October 6th, 2012 at 7:29 PM ^
Yeah it was awkward at times, yes it was sort of odd (to be honest, it's really really to broadcast by yourself). But I genuinely enjoyed listening to his soliloquy on how the Boilermakers came to be. I liked his turn of phrase and his brutal honesty (don't see that from American TV, which has economic incentive to prop up whatever teams they're covering). I will listen to him next time he's on EuroSport.

"When you have Denard Robinson, you can have everything," George Walden
October 6th, 2012 at 7:44 PM ^
That's actually poetic, and I mean that in all sincerity. I was debating between that and the A to B quote as a signature
October 6th, 2012 at 7:46 PM ^
The one I liked: "Purdue's defense has been on the field almost as long as Michigan's offense"
October 6th, 2012 at 7:52 PM ^
Yogi Berra had an affair and George is his bastard son. Or maybe he's Ralph Kiner's son?
October 6th, 2012 at 7:48 PM ^
George Walden or Gus Johnson?
October 6th, 2012 at 7:51 PM ^
I had to turn the volume down. The guy was misnaming everyone. I think the fact he didn't say his own name until the end was because he knew he'd screw that up too!
And someone needs to tell him he doesn't need to end every sentence with "there."
Other than that, not a bad job annoucing the game all the way from Germany even though he did miss the fact Denard had one long run with only one shoe on.
October 6th, 2012 at 7:53 PM ^
Who's Michael Schoenfeld?
October 6th, 2012 at 7:54 PM ^
MIKE JONES
October 6th, 2012 at 7:57 PM ^
Every party has a pooper.... And you, sir, are the pooper. Listen to BTN announcers instead then, and have fun with that.

HE RESPONDED TO MY FACEBOOK MESSAGE! GEORGE WALDEN TALKED TO ME! OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG
October 6th, 2012 at 8:35 PM ^
Me too! He really appreciated the way I told him he was good at brodcasting!
October 6th, 2012 at 9:08 PM ^
What did he say?!?! The dude is a legend on here. You need to let him know about what we are saying about him and maybe he'll even become a bigger UofM fan and get some more of our games.
October 6th, 2012 at 9:21 PM ^
No offense, but that's between George and I alone.
October 7th, 2012 at 12:24 AM ^
He had the occasional pearls of wisdom...but he stunk it up many times....
however, overall it was a nice change from the usual.
i cant believe how many times the play with the purdue wr putting one foot in bounds
before going out was shown.
October 6th, 2012 at 8:49 PM ^
I especially liked his first half insights into Purdue defensive coach Greg Mattison. He dropped that name several times.

Still not funny, sorry.

I've lived in Europe and I cherished any Michigan coverage on television. If there was anything that made me homesick it was Michigan football. George Walden and Eurosport brought back nostalgia and truly made my day.
October 6th, 2012 at 11:54 PM ^
Got his nickname mixed up. Walden was pure brills.
Also, "Thomas Rawls" caught that post near the endzone that Touissant punched in a couple plays later. Funchess is apparently a backup running back.
October 7th, 2012 at 12:13 AM ^
At first I was annoyed by his commentary, but It did become entertaining listening to him. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to do both color commentary and play- by- play while watching a video feed and having no idea what replays or shots are going to be shown between plays and during time outs..

October 7th, 2012 at 8:44 AM ^
Marve warming up on sidelines... "He's got a rocket (arm) there."
Speaking glowingly of Marve and his surgically repaired knee/brace shortly after entering the game... Purdue drove towards the endzone, there was a play where someone almost sacked him and he avoided it and scrambled for 5 yards. "He's a sitting duck out there with that leg/brace. He's doing it with sheer guts and determination"
A short time later Jake Ryan comes free up the middle and plants Marve... "You know that had to really hurt him. He got him right in the torso."
"Denard has 2 scampers for over 20 yeards already..."
The Purdue kicker making his 3rd of 3 FGs... "He's really making a name for himself."
Most classic comments in a long time.
October 7th, 2012 at 9:15 AM ^
This commentary reminded me of the sixties. It was obvious that he was being "left on an island," and I thought he did a good job trying to make sense of the bizarre highlight packages that kept showing over and over.
It was like whoever was in charge of sending the feed to Europe was saying, "Let's fuck with that poor SOB over there."
