Penn State Punishment Open Thread--UPDATE: NCAA Punshment--$60M Fine, Lots of Scholarships
This is your Penn State Open Thread. Keep the board open for other topics please. I know it's tempting, but lots of other, less disturbing topics are available to discuss. I'm not trying to censor anyone. Instead, this is an open place to discuss your thoughts. Keep it clean. I'll review the thread later and be very unkind to posters who decide to be jerks.
NCAA Punishment:
- $60 million dollar fine payable to an endowment for sex abuse victims
- 10 initial scholarships per year for 4 years
- 65 total scholarships on the roster for four years
- 4 year bowl ban
- Free transfers at any point in an athlete's career
This kills the program for no less than 6 years. It's a two horse race in the Leaders Division now.
So Joe Pa is back under 400 wins.
They should have banned the use of the term "Joe Pa".
can the players transfer?
Without penalty...or they can quit football and keep their scholarships at PSU.
yes, and they can also choose to stay on scholarship without playing football
Yes they can and play immediately
Yes.
They can transfer without sitting out a year.
I can't imagine that all of those football players will stay at Penn State. I don't care how much they love their school, I would think a lot of players will transfer. I wonder what their new coach is thinking right now, all of this before his first season even starts...
Why are some people reporting 10 scholarships per year lost and others reporting 20?
10 per year for the next 4 years. Total of 40.
I thought it was 10 a year for 4 years. Making it 40 total schollies
because it said 20 per year, which means 65, some people are stupid and think it means 20 per year, makes no sense.........becuase then they would have 5 scholarship players hahaha
Except it's 10 per year. Emmert said that their 25 limit per year is reduced to 15 per year.
ok. I didn't get a chance to read it first hand yet. My point is some people (not so much on the board) seem to think that its applying to them per recruiting class.
Penalties sound about right to me. Vacating all the wins from the past 13 seasons was very pleasing to hear taking away Jo Pa's title of winningest coach of all time
That will work. It's not like the Big 10 hasn't ever asked ND to join
Are you serious? For the atrocities that where committed on those children, no amount of penalties can erase what they suffered at the hands of this institution that allowed the leadership to turn a blind eye to what was going on.
Where and who does $60 million go to?! Where does PSU come up and pay that money from?! Do they have most of it or do they pay it over time from money that comes into the university? Interesting stuff...Whooaaaaaa just realized the "loss of wins from 1998 - 2011".
Supposedly going a victims rights/awareness fund.
PSU has a 1.75 billion endowment, they should have the cash.
From the article:
"These funds must be paid into an endowment for external programs preventing child sexual abuse or assisting victims and may not be used to fund such programs at the university," the statement said.
Thanks. Hadn't gotten that far yet. Hopefully this is a legitimate fund (I assume it is). Was assuming but wanting to hear this wasn't in any way going near the NCAA. And to the above poster, the 1.75 billion endowment, I agree is plenty to pay this off.
Eff off. Nothing flamebait what-so-ever. These were legitimate questions right off the bat when seeing the punishment.
I am glad that something was done. The vacated wins hurts the collective ego and the Paterno legacy (as it should). The loss of one years worth of revenue isn't all that bad. The loss of the schollys hurts.
PSU actually loses 5 to 6 years worth of recruiting classes. With the four year post season ban all their freshman and sophmores are likely looking to leave immediately. So the next five years of recruiting are screwed for PSU and their past couple years are undone. PSU will have no depth for years.
So I guess Michigan's 9 year winning streak against psu from 1997-2007 never ended.
We didn't win, but we didn't lose either.
And it's actually 16 years now they've gone since beating us last....(games/years)
No, we still lost the games.
Ohio State's 2010 victory over Michigan was vacated by the NCAA. NCAA policies prescribe that a vacated win does not remove the corresponding loss from losing team's records, which if strictly applied in this case would result different head-to-head records depending on which team's record is being considered. The NCAA does not, however, maintain series records between teams. Accordingly the series record stated in the infobox herein wholly omits record of the 2010 game. See [this essay] for additional details."
Seems like The NCAA still counts the loss, but in the head to head series the game isn't counted. So our win percentage doesn't go up, but they haven't beat us in the series since 1996.

Can someone explain exactly how many scholarships they're losing? Phrases like "25 scholarships to 15" and "10 initial and 20 total scholarships each year" are confusing as hell.
The max PSU schollies per year they can offer is 15.
The overall football scholarships they can have on their roster this year is 75.
The following year, the max they can have is 65.
O I C. The 15 is the most they can sign in a year where everyone else can sign 25. Thanks.
Dropping them to 65 essentially makes them a I-AA school competing in I-A.
"Penn State must also reduce 10 initial and 20 total scholarships each year for a four-year period, the release said."
...does that mean that it's actually a 5 year scholarship reduction of 10-20-20-20-20?
Yes and supposedly they cannot offer more than 15 scholarships per year, so attrition is going to be a pain to replace.
the 60M dollars should NOT result in loss of opportunities for non-rev sports
Those endowment numbers can be misleading in this way. Trust me, $60 million isn't pocket change for any public university these days.
It's endowed money, not a checking account. I'm sure they'll pull from several sources, hopefully mostly the football budget.
Wiscy under Beliema has been a consistent threat; they have been manballing for quite some time now.
With the juggernaught lines that have been bred in Madison, Ohio won't be having an easy anything.
Was PSU a threat even before these penalties?
instead of operaing with 85 s'ships for the next 4 years, they will work with
75
65
