The Opening Day 2 Open Thread

Submitted by Leaders And Best on

I thought I would start a new thread to discuss the action at the Opening today.

1. 7-on-7 pool play is going on today.  Shane Morris opened on fire today as Land Sharks team rolled over Brice Ramsey's (UGa) squad.

Tom VanHaaren @TomVH

Shane Morris' team RT @RecruitingESPN Land Sharks beat Vapor Carbon, 27-6

Steve Wiltfong @SWiltfong247

Michigan QB commit Shane Morris is on fire in game one. Making all the right throws.

Jake Butt caught the game winning TD as his team (also Mike McCray) won their opener.

The Opening @TheOpening2012

Tyrone Swoopes to Jake Butt as time expires to lift #AlphaTalon over #SuperBad 18-13 #THEOPENING

2. Linemen 1-on-1 took place earlier this morning.  Unfortunately due to HS regulations in MI and OH, David Dawson and Taco Charlton could not participate with pads and had limited reps.  But Taco still got rave reviews:

Chad Simmons @ChadSimmons_

#Michigan commit Taco Charlton is a very athletic DE - quick and long.

Greg Biggins @GregBiggins

Ohio players can't pad up here but Taco Charlton, wearing just a helmet, is one of the quickest ends here #Michigan

247sports: The guys from states where you can't wear pads are going now. Taco Charlton has been dominant.

3. Kyle Bosch went home sick today. Wish we could have seen him participate and hope he gets better soon.

Steve Wiltfong @SWiltfong247

Michigan commit Kyle Bosch headed home from #TheOpening per his family. Illness.

From 247 Barton Simmons:

Jaylon Smith is the truth. I'm not sure I've ever seen a linebacker that can affect 7on7 as much as he can. Length and range is special.

Jaylon Smith runs 30 yards down field with a slot then nearly grabs a pick that he would have scored on. He's awesome in coverage

Sounds like Shane Morris' team could be the best squad there. Not looking forward to playing Jaylon Smith for 4 years but better at ND than Ohio.

Jaylon Smith is easily the most athletic LB here, getting a great one

Jaylon Smith is the best high school football player in the country that I've seen in person.

Jaylon Smith is the best player on this field. Period. No question In my opinion.

Hopefully, his career plays out like Manti Teo.

I'm really counting on Kelly to continue coaching these kids down at ND because his entire 3 deep rotation on defense (and offense for that matter) will be all high4 low5 star players pretty soon. Maybe they can pair off against FSU in the UnderArmor sponsored Underwhelming Bowl

It is too bad that the game they decided to show on ESPN U has one team with ZERO UofM commits in it! Hopefully when all is said and done, there will be at least one (Fuller/Green)

Unbelievable. They are going to show the Max Browne-Tyrone Swoopes game exclusively it looks like. At least we will be able to watch Jake Butt and Jourdan Lewis.

Correction on 2nd TV game - will be v , who is QB-ed by Tyrone Swoopes not Shane Morris

QB commit Shane Morris is top trending recruit nationally right now at

247sports take on day 2 QB action.

1- Shane Morris- The Michigan commit had the most consistent day. In a setting where quarterbacks tend to settle for the checkdowns and short, safe passes, he was able to consistently throw the ball down the field successfully. We have seen Morris in this setting throw the ball inconsistently in the past, but today, he was on the money.

2- Max Browne- Browne did not have a bad game during the 7on competition. He’s got a big arm, good leadership ability/intangibles and of course, size/height. Browne, playing for former Colorado head coach Dan Hawkins, had the most command of his team in this setting. He is a USC commit.

3- Christian Hackenberg- The Penn State commit had the best release of any of the quarterbacks there and is the smoothest, most natural quarterback prospect of any in attendance. That being said, he also was the most turnover-prone in this setting and had threw more than 15 picks as a high school junior last year. His skill set is such that he could be the best quarterback prospect in this class.

Notes

-The three prospects at the top, Morris, Browne and Hackenberg were very, very close performance-wise on Saturday.

I believe I saw the same update you did but that was about yesterday. From reading updates, it seems like Shane has been top 2 or 3 on everybody's list but the guys in front of him first day are behind him second day and vice versa. Meaning he is playing pretty consistently through the weekend.

This game should have been televised. I hate you ESPN. Shane and the Land Sharks down 18-13.

Shane Morris to OJ Howard for a score then Levonte Whitfield for the conversion. Land Sharks still down 2 scores

Pick six by Colin Spencer. Land Sharks down one score now

OJ Howard with another Circus catch PAT from Morris, Morris and Howard trail Hackenberg 18-13
