OT: Stephen Hawking loses $100 bet to Michigan professor
"But it is a pity in a way because the great advances in physics have come from experiments that gave results we didn't expect.
"For this reason I had a bet with Gordon Kane of Michigan University[sic] that the Higgs particle wouldn't be found. It seems I have just lost $100."

This is from the discovery of a new sub-atomic particle, the Higgs-Boson:

Stephen Hawking lost a physics bet to a Michigan professor. Michigan Difference. Still, this is a great advancement in the discovery of our universe.
no biggie. He's made much more betting against michigan state professors
Come on, now, don't make fun of the Spartan faculty--they were REALLY close when they bet old Steve that the Higgs Bro-son would be discovered this year.
it works every time too.
Smart bet by the professor since there is really no way he could've lost the $100, he would have just been able to claim it hadn't been discovered yet. Unless the bet was limited to one or the other's lifetime that is.
Michigan University. Yikes. I'll forgive him.
Go Blue
the bet could never have been formulated. True, we only know that in hindsight. . .
Relevent.
Good selling point for the university. "University of Michigan: Our Professors Outsmarted Stephen Hawking."
Does this complete the string theory? Finally QM united with GR, finally the T.O.E may be finalized!
