Alabama offers Jayru Campbell

Submitted by ChuckWood on

Jayru is a 2015 Cass Tech QB prospect.

Per Andrew Bone and DGdestroys.

Two and a half years until he will sign his letter of intent, anyone have thoughts on him?  I know we will eventually offer.  Can he play other positions? The kids got great hair.

Of course not, I was just saying that while we've gotten the better of Alabama (and just about everyone...) on the recruiting trail - and hopefully will on the field this fall, too - we did once lose out on a big time prospect to the Tide.

I havent seen him play, but I can't imagine him being "not very good". The kid won state as a freshman, and everything I read made it seem as if the offense rested on his shoulders. RJS never seemed to put up big numbers on the ground so I can see the truth in that. If he can champion a state title team as a frosh then he's good enoug for me ( like that matters ). I'm just sayin, what a foundation to build upon with 3 more seasons to build upon. I hope will her keeps grooming this kid because he could be an top tier 5 star recruit by his sr year. An Alabama offer already? Home should offer just based on principle. Cass should get the title again easily. The team is more diverse talent/position wise this year. How crazy would it be if LTT had been able to transfer.

Conditions were poor, but I was just pointing out that Campbell was not carrying the team through the playoffs offensively against the best teams.  Those two games were on the shoulders of the defense and RJS rushing the football.  They don't win the title without it.  Cass Tech's games aganist their best opponents were played with defense and rushing the football (Utica Eisenhower, De La Salle, MLK, & Crockett x2). I don't think Campbell threw for more than 150 yards or completed more than 10 passes in any of those games.

Campbell blew up in the title game against CC, but so did everyone on Cass.

Even if he didn't look super great the fact that he started on varsity for CT as a FRESHMAN shows that he is an incredible athlete.  Big schools like that have tons of kids and plenty of options to choose from.  And they felt Jayru was the best fit for them even as a freshman.  This kid is going to be really good in the coming years.

Just seems crazy to offer kids this young.  Sure they have athletic potential, but how can you know anything about a kid's character as a rising sophomore?

Unless I'm missing something, starting as a freshman at Qb is not easy and not that common. Yes he did have talent around him like a lot of championship teams do, but he still played the most important position on the field. Give him his due.

All I know is if Jayru committed to Bama on Monday, then didn't have good seasons to finish off his high school career, Saban would find some way to yank the offer before signing day.

I don't like this practice, generally. If it were up to me, I'd ban any kind of contact, offers, etc. until after kids' sophomore years. That would keep 14- & 15-year-olds from having to deal with manipulative coaches and recruiting services/bloggers and would allow coaches to get more information about the prospects before they feel pressured to offer.
In fact, who would be against that? Maybe the middling and bad programs, since the top programs wouldn't fill up with as many boom-or-bust prospects?

Jayru does not have anything physical to go with Saban's words. Early offers are nothing more than coaches telling recruits they're welcome to play there and when possible they will be offered. You can't prevent that speech from being uttered. Choosing a date when written offers can go out is really the best that can be done.

He did, but what I'm saying is that the SMSB camp was a "charitable event" where college coaches were allowed to participate.  I'm not sure what the setup was for this 7-on 7; it might have been a similar function.  Also, if it was on Alabama's campus, then it could potentially be an "unofficial visit" and Saban essentially has free reign to talk to high school football players if they're on campus.  Jamarco Jones just visited Michigan the other day and was offered by Michigan's coaches, so I don't see how we can turn around and be upset that Saban offered Jayru Campbell if they were on Alabama's campus...

I do not understand the reservations about offering this kid Jayru Campbell and making him a priority for 2015 when all he did, as a freshman, was lead Cass tech to a state title in his first year out of middle school. That is a commendable feat regardless but especially for a freshman, and at such a young age already he is battle tested. Also he has all the tangibles as he is like 6'5or 6'6, has a cannon for an arm, and is unflappable in the pocket. Did I mention the hair? However, Saban or any other big time school offering this kid so early is not very telling on how goood the kid will be at the college level,  that is just a common practice nowadays where coaches are offering on potential no different then what Beilein does when scouting BB recruits. Considering what this kid did to help accomplish at 14 what most kids never have the opportunity to do five star or no, in winning a state title, it is obvious he is cut from a different cloth and for anyone to try to denigrate his body of work for whatever reason I think is just being asinine. I am sure Coach Borges would not mind mentoring another Campbell if it means Jayru will manifest the type of success as Jason did for Auburn in 2004.
