Euro 2012 - day six open thread
And just when I post that, the Danes strike back. Great game.
Yeah, good game here. Come on Danes
Oh come on!
I feel your pain. So close............yet so far.
not really optimistic the oranje can make it out of the group. denmark somehow pulling this one out would probably help, but that seems unlikely now.
I have absolutely no problem with people that enjoy soccer / create these threads to share their enjoyment.
That being said, soccer is a shitty sport that is only popular globally because of the ease of play and the lack of cost associated with the sport.
Why do you think soccer is a shitty sport?
Serious question, I respect your opinion, I'm just curious as to why you hold it.
Why isn't swimming as big as soccer globally, then? All you need is water and the ability to move your arms and/or legs.
I have absolutely no problem with people that comment in threads that they are not interested in just to share their ignorant opinions.
That being said, you are a shitty person that has likely never played soccer, and has never travelled outside the US, ever.
Those are not the only reasons why it's popular globally. But it's also what makes it cool. It's something that 99% of the countries in the world can relate to. What's not awesome about that? Sometimes I think you're as embarrassing as LittleMario86 or whatever his name is....
And once again Ronaldo can't score for the national side on an easy oppurtunity.
Oh that strike was pretty! Thought he was going to put it home at first. Nice look for the Danes.
I think Arjen Robben's play is absolutely crucial for the Dutch... I was very underwhelmed with his performance in the last game, and he seemed to kill a lot of the chances the Dutch had around the goal by booting the ball 13823ft. up into the stands with wild shots instead of making that extra pass....
Should be a great game either way...
You just described exactly what he did for the second half of Bayern's season, especially during the Champions League final. He'll find his form eventually, but it could be a long game for the Dutch if he doesn't.
Having watched Robben in the Champions League Final...it doesn't surprise me whatsoever. He is one of the biggest ball hogs in soccer. It works out for him plenty in terms of scoring...but I would HATE to play alongside him.
I think they should start Klaas Jan Huntelaar instead of him, but hey hey!
It's going to be interesting too to see what van Marwyck does with his lineup with Holland essentially needing to win. Does he go away from the van Bommel - de Jong defensive midfield pairing to go more offensive, likely by inserting van der Vaart for de Jong? Gives more offense but a huge risk of exposing his shaky central defense to the German attack. Or does he put in Huntelaar for Affelay, pushing RVP to the left and going with a more traditional center forward? Or does he just stay stubborn and hope the attack works its way out?
These Danish uniforms are appalling. What's with the big floppy collar?
LOL Ronaldo. Torres-esque right there.
mmmmmm Ronaldo failure is so tasty
And of course, Denmark comes back and equalizes.
I mean, how do you miss that? All he needed was one touch to his left and he had a wide open goal.
And the Danes knot it up!
Wow, they say missed goal, goal against, 3 minutes after that horrible miss by CR7 Denmark ties it up, who had Denmark advancing in this group? They'll get paid very well ...
Is it me or is an unusually high percentage of goals in this tournament coming from headers?
Ronaldo fans on a corner when he's relatively unmarked at the corner of the 6. He's having a shocking game.
Wow. That's great. Varela blew his chance against Germany. Fans on his first chance, buries his second.
THERE'S a wonder strike that I feel all EURO spectators have been waiting for.
And now we have Portugal ahead, this group is so much fun
Ps Ronaldo striking out lmao
Wow. Unbelievable. They were putting on so much pressure, they were bound to break through eventually.
Ronaldo doesn't seem to be a likeable figure. Very disappointed that Portugal is going to win
Holland apparently going with the same starting lineup.
Van Marwyck's going to trust the Affalay-RVP-Robben-Sneider front four to figure out some chemistry. I think they'd be far better served in replacing Affalay with Huntelaar and playing him as a traditional 9 with RVP and Robben capable of cutting in from the wings. As it is, all of them are trying to occupy the same part of the field and they keep getting in each other's way.
or just play Huntelaar in stead of V. Persie... who seems to have forgotten where the goal is.
Not having ties to either country, I've got to root for the Dutch here. I want more drama going into the final day of the group stage. It'd be very cool to have all four teams have three points apiece.
Two great chances in first minutes. RVP in alone has his full stretch shot saved and then Ozil hits the post on just an amazingly technically difficult volley.
Ozil has definately regressed in some ways since joining Madrid. He never would have tried to take such an obnoxious dive when he was on Werder Bremen.
That's exactly why the de Jong - van Bommel pairing hurts Holland. Neither is going to go forward to threaten in the box, and so RVP gets stranded by himself in the center.
Add on top of that, they're giving Schweinsteiger acres of space to pick his passes. Netherlands better switch on the offensive with Huntelaar taking a spot up top with Van Persie to have ANY chance in the 2nd half.
robben just took a few staples to the scalp. nice
That's why it's nice to play with a true CF.
Wow, horrible marking by Holland. Free header from 3 yards saved miraculously by Stecklenberg.
Total football doesn't always mean good defense.
theoretically it does... part of total football is the idea that the highest attacker is also the first defender. The dutch lack talent on the back line and lack the defensive mindset in their attackers.
It was a joke, but yeah. They never seem to get the high pressure that is required from their attackers.
Wow, three goals already for Gomez in this tournament.
That could be all she wrote for the Dutch...
Gomez is in his own little world right now as well as Schwienstieger, and the Dutch can't seem to figure what world those two are in.
So Gomez, why couldn't you do this during the Champions League final? Hopefully this means he'll no longer have problems during the bigger games.
Club vs. international is always a very interesting thing. Ronaldo and Messi have both struggled to score at the same pace in international play. There are so many factors that can be attrbuted to that. At the same time some players excel when they play for their country.
Well there goes the Netherlands. Now who do I root for?
Lets see if this gives them some energy.
