U-M Hockey vs Western - Mason Cup Open Thread
Let's Go Blue! Beat Western, win the Gongshow! Hopefully the guys got a good rest after going to 2OT to beat BG. Fortunately, the second OT was very short.
7:35 PM ET on FSD (or FCSA elsewhere, per justingoblue)
I went back and watched it again, and you're right, the WMU guy was at least even and probably ahead. Just really, really frustrating because they'd gotten it wrong so shortly before. I think that play as much as any (besides the third goal, where Bennett got out-hustled) showed how tired Michigan's legs were tonight.
7s, offsides on us. D'oh.
Because Western's guy was going to beat ours to the puck. Which is the reason the icing call on us about two minutes earlier was bullshit. Gongshow took over the third period.
Bummer. Too little too late tonight. Would have been nice to see this urgency two hours ago.
Red will light a sufficient fire under their collective asses, as he tends to do, and it's on to next weekend.
8s now.
Sigh. Comeback started too late.
F U REFS!

Union beat Harvard, and BC/North Dakota victories look likely. I'm pretty confident that puts us in Green Bay, playing Cornell. It will be interesting to see how they place the 2's and 3's because Minnesota will have to be placed out of position (they are the last 2, but will likely be seeded as the first two). If the committee preserves the 8-9, 7-10, 6-11, 5-12 structure, I have the following:
Green Bay
Michigan - Cornell
Ferris - Denver
Minneapolis
North Dakota - WMU
Minnesota - BU
Bridgeport
Union - MSU
Miami - Mass.-Lowell
Worchester
BC - Air Force
Duluth - Maine

Completely agree that the officiating was horrible both ways. But get over it you arrogant ass, WMU was the better team tonight and deserved the win.

One of the worst fucking weekends.

I'm not hating on Western. They won fair and square and probably outplayed us (I didn't get to see the whole game). But it sucks whenever you lose in the CCHA Championship. Along with the loss to Ohio and Lax losing a winnable game, it's one of the worst fucking weekends.

At least Smith committing makes the weekend a little better.
March 17th, 2012 at 10:04 PM ^
but they were tired. Need to rest and step up their game for the tournament. A hockey NC would be nice to say the least.
March 17th, 2012 at 10:58 PM ^
I demand a hockey NC, for MEEEEEE.
And for Hunwick, and the kids, but you know, mostly for MEEEE.
Man, am I still sore about the basketball game.

I cannot believe the CCHA sent McInchak and Wilkins to work the final. That abortion of a crew was so bad, it pissed off Planned Parenthood.
March 17th, 2012 at 10:39 PM ^
Kind of inappropriate, no?
March 17th, 2012 at 10:40 PM ^
Yeah, probably. I went for the one-liner. And missed badly.

It's buried at the end of an open thread and everyone's drunk and somewhere between sad and angry, anyway.

Also already done by a Ferris fan over at USCHO, so... One of the two of you is stealing material.
March 17th, 2012 at 10:47 PM ^
Or we're both the same person...

it was vulgar but appropriately describes the ccha.

I'm just glad everyone in the conference found new homes, all in one piece.
That could have been a real mess.
March 17th, 2012 at 11:02 PM ^
On a side note my apologies for my words to WMU. Their fans though drove me nuts all game. Cant stand that especially when they're talking trash after doing nothing for 25 years

Both major penalties were unconscionable calls. Merrill should not even have received a penalty, and Slater should have been given 2-boarding. The only reason Slater's was a 5 was to make up for the butcher job they gave Merrill.
And how do you give Merrill 5 for kneeing and NOT take him out the game? It's like they knew they were screwing him at the time, but they weren't going to screw him as badly by not ejecting him. *shakes head*

Michigan was gassed, the reffing was gong-ish, and Michigan made a nice push at the end, but Western was the better team. No biggie, though; conference tournament performance is not indicative of future results. See last season, for example.

worse officials CCHA or NCAA tournament?
March 17th, 2012 at 11:20 PM ^
Given their history, the two CCHA referees are far worse, especially Wilkins. I've seen and heard his work up close, at Adrian games. He's been flat-out unprofessional at times.

I can't believe Paula is still writing. You would have thought she would have run out of crayons by now. I haven't read her stuff in about 10 years.
no kidding. She really cannot hold back her sparty bias. She will respond to you too if you tweet her. However, make sure you make the replies cryptic or she will block you on twitter. She really loves trying to solve a puzzle.

I do have some things to say. Western can take this win and their four-seed and stuff it straight up their wide asses. Don't moon our teams bus in front of your kids (http://bit.ly/yh630A) and don't you ever for a second think that your team or Juggalo fans will ever be better than yours. YOU ARE THE GODDAMN CHEAP IMMITATION CRAB IN MY SEAFOOD UDON AND GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD RIDDANCE ONCE WE FORM THE B1G.

Very disappointed. Not in the team, not at all. They fought back and gave a big fuck you to the Gongshow refs who called a 5 minute major. Scoring that goal was a big fuck you to them.
It just really makes me shake my head knowing that these shyster refs who don't deserve to call a D3 Womens game, much less a D1 Conference Playoff game played a part in the score. This isn't just this game, this shit has been going on all year long. It's actually pretty disturbing. I feel very disturbed.
That is why, I am making a sign and bringing it to JLA next year (if Michigan makes it) that will read "CCHA Refs! Enjoy unemployment! signed, B1G teams leaving CCHA".
It just really disgusts me. I had seats right behind the net and watched constant tripping, checking from behind etc going on with western and they did not call one. Right in front of them.
I know it's easy to bitch about the refs after a loss, but this shit has to come to an end. Even when Michigan wins I still want to run the refs out of town with a burning torch.
I think Michigan being tired had to do a lot with them not having any offense in the first two periods. That game last night ended close to midnight while western's game ended before 7pm. western has a good goalie, but Michigan slapped them around like a 1950s housewife back in November to the tune of a 5-2 win.
Just hoping this team gets a 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and can make it to the Frozen Four. Hoping and praying for some magic to happen like in 1998.
The road to Tampa and the chase for #10 begins now. I want nothing more than to send Shawn Hunwick off with a NCAA National Championship. I believe in this team and program, because I have seen them have magic runs before.
GO BLUE!!!!!!!!!!

Quick point of clarification: Michigan will get a #1 seed (#2 overall in the tournament to BC), and is likely headed to Green Bay.
The brackets will be announced tomorrow at Noon on ESPNU.Most opinions I've read state that Michigan will open with Cornell.
but we got outplayed until about the 9 minute mark left in the 3rd when we finally scored the SHG. We were sleepwalking the rest of the night.
I'd be furious at the freakin 5 minute major they gave Jonny for...? except that it's the only thing that really got us back in the game. We nearly stole it but Western earned it.
EDIT: One thing I will complain about though is this: We should have gotten the early game yesterday. Screw your TV ratings CCHA. Do you really think a match-up between two MAC schools and Michigan versus a MAC school is going to be significantly different? Thanks for the screw over. Good riddance
