Does Pam Ward have her own soundboard?
March 24th, 2011 at 11:49 PM ^
Not to mention Gus Johnson is the announcer for Madden. Can you imagine if Pam Ward were the announcer for Madden? Suicide rates would go through the roof.
March 24th, 2011 at 11:54 PM ^
has his own soundboard ...
This section 1 post is impressive just for the fact it isn't a 4000 word opus on how terrible the free press is.
March 24th, 2011 at 11:04 PM ^
Gus= The Best
Pam= The Worst
March 24th, 2011 at 11:04 PM ^
i'm so confused. gus johnson is 100% awesome and pam ward sucks all the awesome from those around her. do you not have the not equals sign?
March 24th, 2011 at 11:04 PM ^
Gus Johnson is the antithesis of Pam Ward. Made a pretty big mistake tonight at the end of BYU-Florida, but no one can capture a moment like Gus can.
March 24th, 2011 at 11:07 PM ^
March 24th, 2011 at 11:12 PM ^
that BYU should foul when the game was tied... not a huge mistake but dumb nonetheless
March 24th, 2011 at 11:38 PM ^
gus likes to ask questions like that to try to help people learn the game of basketball a little better. this one was a little too unnecessary.
March 24th, 2011 at 11:07 PM ^
Gus Johnson is hands down the best announcer in sports. To compare him to the worst announcer in sports is a joke. Seriously, who do you think is a good announcer? Jim Nantz?
March 24th, 2011 at 11:14 PM ^
This is beyond sarcasm. There is a reason that Gus Johnson is the fourth-string TBS guy, and consigned to the second or third BTN game of the week. It's because he's an eye-rollingly bad announcer.
Gus Johnson won't be doing the national championship game. Unless it is the field hockey national championship, in which case he'd be perfect.
March 24th, 2011 at 11:16 PM ^
You really misjudged the opinion of the blog masses, huh?
March 24th, 2011 at 11:27 PM ^
Not that I care; it doesn't change my mind the least bit about Gus Johnson. But I am actually amazed; I never imagined Gus Johnson having any fans.
March 24th, 2011 at 11:29 PM ^
YOU'RE MCFARLIN! GET HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!
March 24th, 2011 at 11:29 PM ^
Do you live under a rock?
March 25th, 2011 at 12:00 AM ^
is having a snowball fight with pitching great randy johnson a bad idea?
March 24th, 2011 at 11:17 PM ^
The Big Ten Network ran an entire ad campaign for him...
March 24th, 2011 at 11:23 PM ^
I'm not kidding. How come no one has come to your defense? It's pretty clear most people here are pro-Gus. How come there are countless YouTube tributes to him? I can't think of any announcer with a following like the one he has. He has so much passion and brings out the energy in every game he does, whether it is a crappy big ten game or the elite 8. He loves what he does and has fun doing it. Sorry you are just cranky. I'm also going to assume you share Frank Beckmann's opinion on the Fab 5.
Also, Section1, you also never answered my question. Who do you consider a good announcer?
March 24th, 2011 at 11:37 PM ^
And the answer would probably be different for different sports. I do think very, very highly of the job Jim Nantz does. Who wouldn't? But Gus Johnson's job is play-by-play for football and basketball. That's a job where you want to be like the referee, and just stay out of the way.
What was Frank Beckmann's opinion on the Fab 5? (btw, I remember the first time that the Fab 5 were ever mentioned together on radio, and it was Beckmann who did it. It was a football game in the fall of, what, 1991? And Beckmann and Brandstatter were having fun in a blowout game, talking about the five new freshmen coming in. They knew all about Chris Webber from Country Day, and Jalen Rose from Southwestern, and a spectacular kid from Chicago named Juwan Howard. Then there were two kids from Texas. "King," and another kid. (They got the answer in about two more minutes.)
March 24th, 2011 at 11:46 PM ^
Jim Nantz is a fantastic golf announcer. But it is impossible for him to show any emotion. He treats the Final Four like it's a preseason NBA game. I also completely disagree with you opinion on what an announcer's job is. His/her job is to accurately tell the play-by-play and at the same time reflect the significance of the event (aka Gus getting excited). It's not to stay out of the way. if the job was to stay out of the way, we wouldn't have announcers on TV broadcasts.
Finally, This is what Beckmann had to say about the Fab 5.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:03 AM ^
Jim Nantz makes me sick.
He oozes sanctimonious hypocrisy from every pore. He does his best to ignore the rampant corruption and cheating in college basketball, and, when he's forced to confront it, he routinely blames it on the players alone. His comments about the Fab Five are Exhibit A in this respect. By saying that the Fab Five ruined Michigan basketball, Nantz slandered the members of the Fab Five who were never even accused of doing anything wrong, and ignored the role of Steve Fisher and the other coaches who had to know that Webber was getting paid by Ed Martin and that Ed Martin ran an gambling operation.
I'd rather listen to anyone else do play-by-play on a basketball game, even Verne Lundquist.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:37 AM ^
Well, to be fair, they were big scary black men.
Also, don't insult Uncle Verne. He and Raftery are easily my second favorite pair. Tomorrow is going to bum me out, though Albert and Kerr aren't awful.
March 25th, 2011 at 10:32 AM ^
But Lundquist . . . sigh. I just can't take him. Maybe it's the neck.
As for Marv Albert, he's my favorite basketball announcer ever. I have a lot of happy childhood memories of listening him broadcast Knicks' games on the radio. I was in second grade when the Knicks won their first championship in 1970. The game was not on TV in New York; it was tape delayed until 11:30 pm. So I listened to Marv call the game, with Willis Reed coming out of the tunnel and setting the Garden on fire and Walt Frazier having one of the greatest individuals performances in a Finals game ever (36 points, 18 assists).
Yesssssss!
March 24th, 2011 at 11:21 PM ^
announce the World Series. Joe Morgan is on ESPN's Game of the Week every week. This must make them all AWESOME announcers by your definition.
March 24th, 2011 at 11:23 PM ^
Please tell me who you think is the better than him on BTN? Why do you think BTN has a weekly feature of Gus Johnson's best calls? What other announcer gets that treatment? Exactly. And Jim Nantz does the title game because he has been doing it for 20 years. He's got seniority. There's a reason people talk about the "Law of Gus"...that close finishes seem to follow him because his calls of the game are so awesome.
The more you post, the more I think you must be a pretty miserable person.
March 24th, 2011 at 11:22 PM ^
whoops.
March 24th, 2011 at 11:25 PM ^
I used to only disagree with about 95% of the shit you spew, but this definitely pushes it up to 100%. Gus Johnson is fuckin amazing, how can you hate on someone who goes absolutely bannanas while calling a game. He is by far the best announcer out there in my opinion, and if TBS and the BTN were smart he would announce all the big games, including the National Championship. Get with the times, let me guess, you're a Nantz fan?
March 24th, 2011 at 11:25 PM ^
The announcer on CBS tonight is Verne Lundquist. Verne Lundquist is senile. The fact that Gus is on CBS has nothing to do with his quality as an announcer.
March 24th, 2011 at 11:40 PM ^
And don't get me started on Jim Nantz.
March 24th, 2011 at 11:45 PM ^
No argument there. The funny thing is, Gus Johnson strikes me as 30-going-on-Lundquist.
March 24th, 2011 at 11:54 PM ^
as in America heading towards Bolivia
Not one person has gave your OP a plus one. 49 down, none up. That's impressive.
March 24th, 2011 at 11:27 PM ^
I have it on good authority that when God watches college basketball, he insists on Gus Johnson play-by-play. That is all.
March 25th, 2011 at 10:29 AM ^
Gus Johnson is the BTN's #1.
And he isn't employed by TBS, he is employed by CBS, and has long been their #2 being Lundquist.
He does not do more games on BTN because THEY WON'T PAY HIM ENOUGH. Why do you think the BTN runs ads for basketball that advertise Johnson, not the game? Because people like him.
March 24th, 2011 at 11:08 PM ^
I'm going to create new usernames just so I can neg you more.

Section 1. What, did he suggest everyone should stand up during games?
You leave Gus alone. You hear me.
March 24th, 2011 at 11:16 PM ^
When someone reaches their awesomeness apex, anonymous internet hipsters decide that something can no longer become more awesome than it already is. They then decide that if they opinionate not liking the awesome thing, they will be ahead of the trend of when it's cool not to like the thing that once was awesome. That doesn't necessarily mean the original thing has stopped being awesome. I wish I had a chart. Chart?
March 24th, 2011 at 11:18 PM ^
Johnson has made about 5 mistakes, including the one tonight during the BYU game
Ward makes about 5 per play
March 24th, 2011 at 11:21 PM ^

I'd nominate Tirico as about 10,000% better than Gus Johnson, with a wealth and range of experience that puts Gus Johnson's resume to shame.

bautista with the caaaAAAATCH.... AND THATS IT
but nothing is better than when he just yells uncontrollably at a late game 3 pointer

That video has my favorite Gus reaction of all time. When Crawford hits the deep three, Johnson can't even muster words. He just goes "UH! AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"
My favorite call has to be Adam Morrison's buzzer beater against Oklahoma State. "LARRY BIRD...MAYBE!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmY-BXzMc5g
My favorite Gus game is the end of UCLA-Gonzaga (the game where Morrison cries). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vt0VUSyVIr4
