The OP said "he might not have done this because of football related concussions?"
I was simply providing some information on the fact that this is a very real problem outside of sports.

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US., causing over 40,000 deaths in 2012. Every 13 minutes someone is committing suicide. Suicide and depression are a problem everywhere, not just football, hockey or wrestling.

I think we agree it was the right thing to do, just shouldn't have had too.

This is not basketball. He had to slow it down, because they went up tempo and we were not prepared for it. Hoke is entirely to blame for it, it is his job to make sure they are prepared.
|4 weeks 6 days ago||Serious Question||
Do we know for sure that Nuss had a blank check? I just have this weird feeling that Nuss is being hindered by what Hoke thinks Michigan football should look like.
|4 weeks 6 days ago||Interesting couple of post.||
Interesting couple of post. Starts off with saying "fuck him" about a 17-18 year old making a choice about where he will play football and ends with "You're only as good as you're word".
What do your words say about you?

Players don't like conditioning, so Hoke doesn't make them do it. Remember he's a nice guy, players coach.

Panthers fan here and you are so correct. I don't think most people understand how much talent walked out the door after last season. Basically they just added Benjamin and a bunch of scrubs.
I was never a big fan of Cam and you are correct about him not being that accurate, but behind this line he is screwed. I think they should shut him down before he gets broken physically and/or mentally.
|6 weeks 6 days ago||I asked this question||
I asked this question already, but which injuries are you talking about? It is football, people get hurt, which ones are the results of S&C.
"a troubling lack of physicality" that is not the job of the S&C coach. That is the job of the head coach.
It's hard to determine the physical abiltiy of players on the field, when they are poorly coached. Again, it doesn't matter how gifted of an athlete you are, if you are poorly coached, have poor technique and are out of postition it doesn't matter. You keep talking about what you can see. If see a poorly coached football team. They look slow at times, because of a little thing call "paralysis by analysis". They think to much, do not trust themselves on their reads/ assignments which causes them to react slowly.
I also have sports injuries. I've torn my ACL and have dislocated both shoulders multiple times and required surgery for those. Does that mean my high school football coach didn't train me correctly?
You are just looking everything through one lense. I see things differently because I coach football, while also being a S&C coach. Are we as athletic as OSU or Bama? Hell no, but if you watch some of the guys from high school, some of this isn't suprising. Smith is exactly what we thought he was, a straight a head pounder with average speed. Wellmen is not going to make him Barry Sanders.
How do you explain Taylor Lewan's numbers by the way? He killed it at the combine last year, just luck I suppose.
People just want to argue? Dude, read the title.
|6 weeks 6 days ago||Just so we are clear, you do||
Just so we are clear, you do not know what Wellmen has going on inside his program, but yet "there is a better way than what's going on now" ?
|6 weeks 6 days ago||Questions||
You keep talking about keeping the players safe and that is great, but what injuries are you blaming on Wellmen? We don't even know what half the injuries are, we are just guessing and reading tweets. Is it Wellmen's fault Peppers has bone chips in his knee (assuming that is the injury)? It appears Morgan broke his hand/wrist or something, is that on the S&C coach? Morris' concussion? Green's broken collarbone? Hill's broken jaw? Are you going to blame him for Pipkins ACL last year, when he was rolled up on?
You also claim that S&C is one of the main factors to football success. There is some truth to that, but if you are not putting those strong, fast players in the right position it doesn't matter. If you are not teaching the correct technique, it does not matter. If they are thinking more than reacting, it does not matter. I was on a coaching staff once were we had five seniors who played college football on offense. All big, strong, explosive, fast dudes. We averaged 7 points a game vs teams with a winning record. Had nothing to do with S&C and everything to do with coaching.
By the way, I am also the strength and conditioning coordinator.

I am a Panthers fan and I agree. He had no idea how to use Cam. I was thrilled when he got the Browns job.
|12 weeks 6 days ago||I could be wrong, but I||
I could be wrong, but I believe that Bellomy signals in plays. He doesn't carry around his helmet and he can't just run off to get it. Someone has to understand the situation and make sure he gets it. Who is in charge of that I don't know.

Their offense has no excuse, I agree. You have to admit that they have very little depth on the dline.

Not really. Depth is always important and Wisconsin has lost two of their three starting d-linemen.

Kind of agree. However, I think what you are seeing are the benefits of oversigning.
|18 weeks 6 days ago||Football isn't hard?||
You seem to be forgetting that the defense isn't going to just let you engage them and drive them off the line. Saban makes things easy? Obviously you don't know much about his defense.
|18 weeks 6 days ago||I'm not sure who taught you||
I'm not sure who taught you how to punch, but if it is identical to your bench press motion you're doing it wrong.
Bench is over rated, period. Squats and cleans are where you make a living as an OL (actually all positions). If you want to knock people off the LOS it's about the lower body, not the upper. That is why you don't stress the shit out of it.
I also have a copy of Barwis' Michigan workouts and bench press is definitely part of the plan.

Three weeks is a lot of time. I have nine practices left before our first game. I have no idea who my two DT's are, who my OLB's are, I have no idea who the hell is going to play either corner. Our QB competition is to close to call, only one guy on the OL is a lock to start. Oh and we are a top five ranked team, a lot of people think we can win a state title.
However, you have just made me start to panick, so tomorrow to start practice I am going to run around waving my hands screaming "we're all going to die, we're all going to die" Also, we're just going to cancel the season. Thanks for you wisdom.

I'll be honest with you. In the last eight years I have never had a kid quit playing football and play soccer. I've had them quit to play basketball, hockey, baseball, lacrosse and even one for show choir, but never soccer.
Would be curious to hear what other coaches have had happen.
|27 weeks 2 days ago||Honestly||
I have no idea why you even come back here. I hate how most of the commenters think they know anything about coaching football or just football in general. I would love to post more, but there are wayyyyyyyyyyy to many dipshits that have no clue that will attack you for your opinion. An opinion that is based on years of experience, actually coaching football. I hate that most of the posters think actual football is like a video game. This game is fucking hard, just because a kid was good in high school does not mean that he will be good in college; there are just to many variables that go into everything. I have read about an 1/8 of a UFR and said to myself "what the fuck is this guy talking about" and I will never read one again. Some days I hate that I read this blog and that causes me to hate myself a little bit.
I appreciate the work you do trying to educate some of the fans here. I have no idea why you do it, but it is admirable. I also appreciate the work that Magnus does and enjoy reading his blog.

One thing that is kind of cool about them doing things a little different is that it keeps us book readers guessing as well. I think it is smart on their part.
|36 weeks 6 days ago||That position often forced||
That position often forced him to cover slot recievers too,which is not good. Solid defenses are built up the middle. Therefore putting your best defensive player in the middle is not a bad idea. It is also not just about Jake Ryan. It is about making the entire defense better. If we play solid defense and win 10 games, I don't care if Ryan is third string waterboy.
|39 weeks 3 days ago||You are correct about Tall||
You are correct about Tall and I think he was a good coach. He was replaced by Hoke and Mattison, who are two very well respected defensive line coaches with a ton of experience. I think this is the learning curve you are talking about and I agree with you that there is one.
Experienced coaches do stay on one side of the ball, but younger coaches ofter flip for a few years. They do this for a couple of reasons and I'll use a coach with a defensive background as an example. If they have to go coach offense, it forces them to understand how offenses truely work. They can then use their defensive knowledge to attack opposing defenses because they know where the weak points are.
Yes, I know there is more than taking proper steps involved in playing football. It was just a simple example of a very important part of playing football.
|39 weeks 3 days ago||You might want to check on||
You might want to check on who made the absolute statement first and yeah they can. All coaching is it teaching. If you can teach a linebacker to take his proper steps, why can't you teach a wide reciever too? If you can teach a linebacker to take on a block, why can't you teach a corner too?
What do I know though, I've only coached like seven positions.
