Third Gholston foul

There was a third Gholston incident that did not get called, and another assault on Denard - If you watch early in the 4th quarter maybe about 11-12 minutes left? Gholston sacks Denard.  After Denard is clearly down for a few seconds, he pulls on the back of Denards pads, pulling Denard onto his neck and roll his hips over Denard - purposely trying to again hurt Denards neck.  Check the video yourself to see.

thanks guys totally forgot he had been here already 2 years.
panter gone Wow, I didn't know that he left too. Went back and he's definitely not on the spring roster. When did this happen? I googled and found nothing on it. (not that it was looking like he would contribute, but obviously it is hoped that every guy in the program will at some point)
No reason Helmuth shouldn't contribute at some point IMO... Posted this on the front page story comments, but I guess no one read it... Seems to me that there is a lot of promise from his HS days (below) - maybe he's not big will jr, but no reason he shouldn't contribute at some point in the future either at DE or DT. "three-year starter at defensive line and fullback ... finished prep career with 110 tackles, 11 sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two interceptions... tallied 36 tackles, seven sacks and two interceptions during senior campaign ... selected first-team all-state at linebacker by The Detroit News... first-team all-state defensive lineman and running back by the Detroit Free Press... Ann Arbor News Player of the Year and was named all-league on offense and defense by the newspaper... two-time Division I state champion in the discus... won the state title in the shot put..."
I'm more optimistic about Helmuth as DL... Seems to me that there is a lot of promise from his HS days (below) - maybe he's not big will jr, but no reason he shouldn't contribute at some point in the future either at DE or DT. "three-year starter at defensive line and fullback ... finished prep career with 110 tackles, 11 sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two interceptions... tallied 36 tackles, seven sacks and two interceptions during senior campaign ... selected first-team all-state at linebacker by The Detroit News... first-team all-state defensive lineman and running back by the Detroit Free Press... great article seems he produced a high pressure d at every one of his stops as a DC... even with the Chiefs "Last season (2003), Robinson’s Chiefs’ defense produced 36 sacks (T-6th/AFC), 25 interceptions (2nd AFC/3rd NFL) and forced 37 turnovers (T-3rd AFC/5th NFL). Kansas City led the NFL in turnover margin with a +19 advantage in that category. In 2001, the Chiefs registered 34 sacks, 18 interceptions and forced 31 turnovers. They led the AFC and ranked third in the NFL in turnover margin that year." I agree it seems a good hire. Now if only the fan base can wait for our young players to mature, and us to land some LBs.
I have to agree with the more optimistic views This guy has the vote of his former players, not to mention RR - both sets of people much closer to him than anyone here... Also he has had more success doing this job than our recent previous DCs before taking a job at M... Probably more likely he sees it as a chance to get back to something he loved doing and was good at, than it is he taking it as he is "in decline" Lots of premature condemnation. I think better to give the guy a chance to see what he can make happen... Although I think patience is in order as the crop of young talent we have by and large probably won't be ready to set the earth on fire for a couple years, and still lacks players at key positions such as LB.
Just ask Sam McGuffie's neurologist so cruel.
no reason to burn schollies where we have depth 1-as mentioned, we have other positions of need, besides, if one goes unused, with all the early enrollies we are getting these days, there is a chance to use it on a guy coming in next winter (they can count against either year's limit) 2-too much depth would be result in someone languishing on the bench (either him, or another schollie athlete) - which is bad for morale 3-if the guy really wanted to go to UM, I am sure they would love to have him walk on, and he could earn a schollie if he really warranted one
as posted by others,,, Having more quality athletes who can rotate at DE or DT is often done, and actually can make the individuals MORE productive, not less... For an example, see last years super bowl winning NY Giants, who rotated through at least 7 or maybe 8 guys on the D line. Those guys were terribly effective in a rotation.
barwis quote must have me confused with someone, i don't post often if someone was out of line, rr i am sure will address it
I never said shafer consults I never said shafer consults barwis on anything. There is no reason not to believe he doesn't have a sideline job though. Making sure the correct guys are in on subs is an easy enough job for anyone, and yet an important one. If he is a hype man, this would be logical as he could also hype up the ingoing unit. And if someone wasn't in on time, or weren't where they were supposed to be, I would imagine he would get in their face. Either way, you are just speculating, as am I. Pointless. Someone got in stewarts and thompsons face. Get over it. They aren't little babies, they can handle it.
why would it be odd for them to have a job like making sure subs are in or out? they have been in a staff for years now (in barwis case) I would think he knows more and has game day jobs other than just S&C by now...
at least you acknowledge that it is complete speculation. But having a headset or not doesn't mean you do or don't have a role. If there was a real issue, I am sure it will come up. And (as you said you would do the same) I am sure the coaches, or RR would fix it if they did in fact do something out of line. Rabblerousing about it isn't going to do any good in the meantime.
The fact is no one here knows what barwis or anyone else's game day roles are.... and I highly doubt that barwis doesn't have some kind of game day responsibilities. unless you know everyone's role on the sidelines, saying something is or isn't someone's place is purely speculation.
From ESPN (yes, they are pure evil) Junior tailback Brandon Minor, who scored Michigan's only touchdown, said: "You can't really blame Rich Rod because everybody on the team did not buy in like they're supposed to. We have a couple of guys not going hard. We'll correct that most definitely. That ain't going to happen on my watch as a senior."
Let me be the first to say: BRING ON 2009!!! GO BLUE!
Is it too much to ask for OSU to end up in the RB vs USC?
yes Tressel - run up the score... RR feel the power of the dark side of the force build up inside you...
Between this game... And some OSU fan taking a dump in his cooler, I think RR will hate buckeyes as much as anyone after this... Is beanie going to come back? Maybe I'm crazy but Pryor really doesn't scare me..
I agree that I thought he

I agree that I thought he should have been retained... However, as another poster suggested, without good DL/LB play, it is hard to generate good secondary results.  Bedford had a record of good secondaries during his years at UM and with the Bears, however, all those units usually had pretty good DL/LB groups up front.

Also, I think I read that he had a prior relationship with Meyer... So when the change came, he probably saw an opportunity down at UF.

I liked the idea of keeping WR coach Campbell (who went to Iowa) too. He had probably a stronger record of production of players for UM. But lets face it, without a competent OL/QB, it probably wouldn't have made a difference.

the last 11 years? 1995-1998  Michigan (DB)
1999-2004  Chicago Bears (DB)
2005-2006  Oklahoma State (DC)
2007          Michigan (DB)
2008-pres   Florida (DB)
dude

that is freaking messed up

(although the pepperidge farm comment was hilarious, the story makes me cringe)

Brian - keep in mind that if a fight breaks out, they don't often get broken up after one punch (see Dazed and Confused). Throwing (empty plastic) bottles isn't setting a good example, and won't lead to anything good, much less changing idiotic boo'ers behavior.  I do commend you for trying to take a stand against them.  Just wish you had found a better way to do it.

Irony - I am willing to bet most (not all) of the people booing the loudest are the same people that were the most vocal about getting Carr out of the HC position...  Many of us wished for a coach that would go long before the end of a half when we are behind, and then these people boo when that play is picked off...

I might have been one of the few fans that wasn't mad.  The cupboards were bare or close to it at way too many positions for good things to happen this season.  And then throw in a new system, all new coaches, etc.

It has been a long time since a you could say we have had a steady succession of players ready to take over at key positions like OL, LB, CB, S, etc. How many times in the past 5+ years have we kept our fingers crossed that some player would miraculously step from previous mediocre performance to fill a glaring void in the roster? And now the fruits of that mismanagement of recruting has finally come to bear. This was coming regardless. The change in coaching just brought it forward sooner.

The only people that are entitled to good performances are those who try to spur the team on to greater thing through blind support.  The people that make noise on 3rd downs, the ones who spell out a giant M in the stadium etc.  People who tune in across the country regardless of the teams record. Players play for people like that, not for whiney bitches that boo every time they get their panties in a bunch.

If you aren't part of the solution you are part of the problem. Support our guys out there or give up your tickets for the real fans. And don't come back when things turn around.  We don't want you, and I bet the players and coaches don't either.

I don't agree with everything that has happend in the coaching change. I wanted them to retain bedford and campbell, maybe english. But I still will support my team no matter what.

I do think

M fans could take a page from the PSU fan book. Those guys support their team en masse in the stadium, and it is clearly displayed for all to see.

I often wish we had half the solidarity in the stands PSU does. That kind of support could do anything but help they guys on the field.

repost

you mean...

the one in my avatar.  I posted up the large version a while ago.

I don't know what the rights were on the original moon photo (unaltered was with an american flag).

I will post it up again if anyone wants it.  Give me a day or two.

I would say just don't take credit for the photoshop, but someone from some where else will pass it off as their own somewhere down the line (as people have done with my mgovideo game postings, although it hasn't stopped me from sharing)

Interesting read... and slightly eerie the way he almost spot on predicted the hinging factors. Hope Alan posts more in the future.
OSU's ranking IMO has more to do with the 2007 finish..

And the fact they played in the NC last year.

They stood atop the big11 at the end, but let's face it, they beat MSU by 7, lost to Illinois, and ultimately beat a crippled/no-offense M team 14-3. Really if it weren't for myriad of failed contenders (Oregon putting out USC then Dixon going down, Mizzou beating KU then losing to OU), and the non-draw of an all SEC NC, they probably would not have gotten the trip to the BCS game.

Boeckman has never been that impressive, and as has been said, without beanie, they really don't have an offense at all. If beanie has extended injury issues this season, they could have a disaster of a year.

A lawyer friend of mine once told me..

That the first step was to refuse the breathalyzer... But I have no idea how that works or if they could later order a blood test...

(I have never been in that situation and I would gladly pay a 100 dollar cab fare to avoid the remotest possibility)

enjoyed imafreak1's BGSU post immensely... But maybe I just like wierd stories. Comparing Minor to Brown, my gut says Minor is more reliable (solid is a great word, but merely solid), on the other hand, Brown might be more likely to hit the home run and come up big this year, or totally suck. Of course Chris Perry went all buck-wild unexpectedly a few years back, and I don't think I expected that before the season started. I would say you never really know what to expect at all going into this year. Ultimately, I think the success of either back will be dependent on how effectively we can spread the field, and keep the opposing defenses from just teeing off trying to kill the QB and any RBs in the backfield. I am pretty sure RR will always run the spread, but I can't help but think with more toys at his disposal (ie, players with ability) we will see the evolution of RR's scheme over time.
Agreed with MGoObes

Smaller, quicker, stronger D linemen are much harder to deal with than simply big ones.  Everything else equal, sure bigger is better, but it sounds like the D line will be stronger and quicker, which should yield great results on the field.

Add to the fact that TT was quoted as saying he wasn't that impressed by his own performance last year, I expect he will have a huge increase in productivity.

Braylon, Newsome, etc Agreed with mjvancam, what I remember was that Braylon wasn't really on anyone's radar and then he showed up to UM camp and blew everyone away. I think the story goes that his dad kept him under wraps as far as recruiting (whatever that means) and took him to UM first thinking the coaches would be interested. There was a whole story on Braylon's transition to to UM some time ago (don't recall where). All this Newsome speculation is really tiresome. That poster heard Newsome decommitted from where? Regardless of where he ends up, Newsome has my sympathy for having to deal with all the incessant rumor mongering. RR seems to have gotten the interest of some top level DB recruits recently. I wonder (with some of the offers we put out earlier) if he expected the interest level in the program to be what it is... What recruits are the best fit for the team is up to RR and staff of course. That QB throwing to the Shaq kid is dismal about 90% of the time. Although that's about average for a HS QB I guess.
Looking forward to this season....

As GSimms said, Henne was graduating after last season anyway. Regardless we would have a new QB. Guys not fitting the system? The coach will make it work.

That is not why I am excited though...

If for one reason only, it would be to see our boys in Maize and Blue born again hard... GSimms is right, there will be a stress on the fundamentals, conditioning and attitude like nothing in recent history...

I can't wait to see some O Lineman other than Long finish his block and absolutely bury his guy into the dirt... I want to see a reciever knock the $hit out of some safety who doesn't see him coming on a running play.... I want to see defenders laying the wood, and making (not missing) tackles... Swarming D, getting 11 guys to the ball... Everyone thought D Warren had a little nasty streak going at times, I bet we will see even more from him, and a whole bunch of guys with a new attitude out there.

These are the same coaches (for the most part) that turned Mundy into something functional (if not good) in less than a year. When we had him, he was apathetic at best.

If anything we should be glad the old is gone. The same regime that brought us innumerable missed tackles, backbreaking runs up the middle through a whole swarm of guys who missed the play, classes of O Lineman that never developed (shouldn't Jr OL be ready to start?), and plethora of other guys that just sat on the bench, or just plain didn't get after it consistently. That regime brought us one great game a season.

I think we are going to have a whole team full of guys who are going to be chomping at the bit to get out there and knock the snot out of somebody.

Not a year from now, this year.

If that isn't something to be excited about, I don't know what is.

I like it But 200 dollars for printed on numbers? Ouch.
Hilarious... If Sam wasn't already my favorite incoming player, he would be after reading that... Hoping for more Sam episodes in the future, and interested to see how he and Feagin interact...
Mad dog 20/20 Sangria I have been telling people the sangria was made with mad dog for years, but no one believed me... Blimpy burger is a must. I think I used to go with a quad or quint (whatever) the key was top it with chili... And I second central campus and the law quad for sightseeing. UM has an amazing campus. Lots of other great recommendations already listed here. I think it is great to have places in mind, but don't be afraid just to go where things lead you.
Almost fun to read... I got a few chuckles out of your dramatic style... If rehashing the memories didn't make me throw up a little bit. The Carty remark was more than fair in this instance. Not a bad commentary, probably what most of us were thinking at the time. Not that I ever wanted to revist that part of UM football history.
That movie is classic.. That movie is classic..
I will help as much as possible...

Unfortunately I don't have FIOS. And I will be travelling on externships most of the fall (until mid october actually)... Which sucks. I will probably be working most Saturdays and miss most games this season.

The 720p version really is "premium" content - Unless a limitation of hard disk space occurs, I dont think you should worry about getting it out in a hurry. I know if there is a game I want in 720p it is becase I will want to archive it, so the wait won't matter. Having that version available is enough. Also, I don't think you would need to offer every game in that resolution.

Anyway - here to help in anyway I can (sorry so limited this year). You can always pm me on my MGoVideo acct if I can help (97Alumni)

By the way - the fact you are trying to get this type of level of availability together is amazing (and unprecedented to my knowledge). I applaud your efforts karpodiem.

Now we are in space?

Although not the best photoshop job, I just thought I would offer this as it fits the theme....  Until the banner contest is settled of course...

Do with it what you will.  All the "space bitches" talk inspired it.

Newsome/Forcier

I agree with the idea Newsome is probably tired of hearing "are you still committed to UM?" It seems every single interviewer asks him that. No comment is probably better than what he feels like telling them.

As far as Forcier - we have already seen what "good family values" can do with one disgruntled family. Isn't there some small chance he is pushing the issue with UM to chase out other QBs? It's not completely implausible considering his brother was basically forced out, even if it was LC and not RR, there might still be some hurt feelings there.
