Who was Charles Stewart yelling at?

Submitted by Dan Man on
I was watching the game at a bar, so it was hard for me to catch what was happening, but it appeared that Charles Stewart was yelling at one of the coaches, and then it looked like he was yelling at Barwis. Anyone know what was going on?

I thought Stewart was yelling at one of the coaches... ...and then Thompson was yelling at Barwis. But I could be wrong. Either way, somebody reached in and pushed Barwis away. I would prefer that Barwis keep his nose out of coaching. He's a strength and conditioning coach, not a football coach. The only way he should be yelling at players is when it comes to motivation; that certainly looked like an issue with substitutions or a missed assignment or something, which is not his expertise or his place.

I agree and disagree with that statement. Barwis has been around footbal a long time, and he knows his place on the sideline. If he feels that a player fucked up and yells at them, I think that is his place. I would be willing to bet he was yelling at him because he was dogging it or because he did something stupid like yell at an official or another player. If that was the case then I not only don't mind, but I approve of it wholeheartedly. Someone has to hold the players accountable in losses, and who better than the scariest motherfucker on the sidelines.

Well, I'm sure we're going to continue to disagree on this one. Math teachers shouldn't be stepping in and telling you how to write an English paper. A police officer shouldn't be handling a fire hose. By definition of his job - strength and conditioning coach/coordinator/whatever - he shouldn't be in the players' faces. The football coaches - Dews, Gibson, Rodriguez, Magee, Shafer, Hopson, Frey, etc. - should be coaching the players on the field. Barwis should be cheering them on just like every other Joe Schmoe. If somebody had to push Barwis away, then that probably means Barwis was doing something he shouldn't have been.

Tony Dews? At least, that's who I thought it was. I'm not sure now. Either way, that wasn't a pretty scene. I was more embarrassed by that than anything I saw on the field today. I felt the same way about Barwis as you did, Magnus.

It would be nice if the media used a little discretion in instances like that. Ya know, its tense out there, tempers flare, the media needs to respect these guys a little more. If you, Jay, felt embarrassed by it, it must have looked bad. I missed it.

Singletary is always on the sideline, but he wasn't directly involved in that incident. Stewart got his facemask pulled by what looked to be another member of the strength and conditioning staff. I have no clue why they (S&C) were all bunched up, along with the football coaches and in the middle of substitutions. Thompson came off the field during the TO, and appeared to be going directly at Barwis (and vice versa). RR, surprisingly, did not really tell anybody to back down. I'm not saying whether it is good or bad, it was just a very interesting dynamic. My opinion...know your role!

no one here knows what barwis or anyone else's game day roles are.... and I highly doubt that barwis doesn't have some kind of game day responsibilities. unless you know everyone's role on the sidelines, saying something is or isn't someone's place is purely speculation.

I'm on the complete opposite side - I highly doubt Barwis DOES have some kind of game day responsibility. He doesn't have a headset. He doesn't have a clipboard. He's usually just standing in the background, not saying anything. When players get injured, he's not the one to greet them when they come to the sideline - that's handled by the athletic trainers. My viewpoint is complete speculation. I will acknowledge that. But it's also complete speculation that Tony Gibson isn't using his headset to take fast food orders for Taco Bell down the road. Let me put it this way: I'm a high school football coach. If any of my training staff (we don't have S&C coaches) tried to make a football coaching comment/decision/whatever, I would kindly ask them to keep their opinions to themselves. That's why there are football coaches.

that it is complete speculation. But having a headset or not doesn't mean you do or don't have a role. If there was a real issue, I am sure it will come up. And (as you said you would do the same) I am sure the coaches, or RR would fix it if they did in fact do something out of line. Rabblerousing about it isn't going to do any good in the meantime.

I can't find it now, but I recall reading that Barwis was responsible for keeping everyone on the sidelines, given the new sideline rules this year. It doesn't explain the altercation, but Barwis does have some game day responsibility if my recollection is correct.

I agree. But if a number of your S&C staff are heavily involved in defensive calls or substitutions, that is a little odd to me. If you are sideline hype man...fine. But when it crossed over into spats with players and grabbing facemasks...

Your next comment should just say, "I love Barwis so much, he could do no wrong." If you think Shafer consults Barwis about his defense and assigns him and his staff gameday roles, this discussion is moot. Trust me, other than S&C, he is more than likely just a glorified hype man. He may get a little more leeway because of his status and relationship with RR, but I just don't think it goes beyond that.

I never said shafer consults barwis on anything. There is no reason not to believe he doesn't have a sideline job though. Making sure the correct guys are in on subs is an easy enough job for anyone, and yet an important one. If he is a hype man, this would be logical as he could also hype up the ingoing unit. And if someone wasn't in on time, or weren't where they were supposed to be, I would imagine he would get in their face. Either way, you are just speculating, as am I. Pointless. Someone got in stewarts and thompsons face. Get over it. They aren't little babies, they can handle it.

Point taken. The argument is not that big a deal. My only concern was due to the incident, our substitution got fucked up and it cost us a TO. If certain people are stepping outside of their roles, it needs to be corrected. What happened to the Barwis is my god quote?

This is somewhat off topic, so I'm not arguing with you. But I wouldn't want the job of making sure the right packages/substitutions are in the game. It seems to me that would be a very confusing job for one person. Not only would you have to know every package and be right on the ball, but you would also have to be aware of injuries and who knows what plays. I mean, let's say you have a 4-2-5 package with Williams as the nickel guy but he gets hurt, who goes in for him? Another corner or would you just sub in a linebacker? Anyway, like I said, that isn't relevant. But with complex defenses and packages, I bet it's somewhat strenuous to make sure the right people are always on the field.

That's what position coaches are for. You know your unit. You know your injury situation. You get the defensive call, and you make sure you have the right personnel for your unit. Very rare for one individual to be responsible for all 11 bodies, especially at high college level and multiple subs.

i was not happy to see the pre-game argument. the day of the osu game, part of the team is at each other's throats? i agree with jay, that was much more embarrassing than anything we did on the field today
