WSJ's Top 25 Coach-Producing Schools: Iowa 1st, Michigan 9th(t)
Interesting WSJ article on which schools produce the most D-1 coaches. Iowa is # 1. Michigan is tied for 9th.
It's no secret which college football programs produce the most NFL players. Schools like Texas, Ohio State and Florida do pretty well in that category.
But tucked away in the heart of Big Ten country, somewhat removed from the national spotlight, there's a different sort of football factory—one that specializes in coaches.

Can anyone name the 12 from Michigan?
I most definitely can not.

Wheatley, Hart, Mallory, Moeller, Trgovic (sp?), Miles, Harbaugh,
EDIT: Oops, I was thinking D-1 or NFL. Trgovic and Harbaugh are NFLers

Vance Bedford, Scot Loeffler, Ron English, does Mattison and Hoke count eventhough they're at Michigan again?

Kurt Anderson, Steve Morrison, Tom Burpee, Scot Loeffler, Erik Campbell, Doug Mallory, Chuck Heater, Mike Elston
Plus the ones from above: Tyrone Wheatley, Curt Mallory, Les Miles

but Ohio produces or trains a ton of coaches and I would have thought we were 1 and 2 respectively.
Noticably missing: MSU. Name one guy who came through that program that has gone on to do anything (other than Kirk Gibson). It's a black hole.

For a time, Nick Saban was the DB coach under Perles, and Dantonio was the DB coach under Saban. That's all I can think of for MSU in the modern era anyway.

graduates of that school.

I am pretty sure MSU has made just about zero contributions then.

Is that really noticable? Must be the the feeling "Hmm, this list feels correct."

I guess Miami's (NTM) days as 'the cradle of coaches' have ended.

Lloyd was an awful identifier and developer of coaching talent. Bo's guys were largely successful, Mo's tenure too short, Lloyd's guys were largely just non-entities that no one wants.

Yes the citizens of Mt Pleasant cant thank Lloyd enough for the gift of Mike DeBord, thanks to him I had the entire stadium to myself!!! (and Carr was pissed that DeBord got passed over for the Mich HC when he got his ass handed to him in the MAC!!)

not a bad tracking record in 5 years.

like Jim Harbaugh, who was a D-I coach just a year ago.

Anybody know who the twelfth coach is? It has to be someone with a U-M degree and they have to be a HC or assistant, so Mike Hart probably doesn't count since he is a quality control assistant.

Is anyone here old enough to remember the days when whipping your children for no reason wouldn't get you thrown in jail and/or your kids taken away?
December 22nd, 2011 at 3:07 PM ^
Yeah, I saw that... we certainly live in very different times. When I want to get my kids (ages 6 and 8) attention, I just have them stand up and I crouch down so we're looking directly into each others eyes.

Pretty horrifying, but it clearly made an impression, because he continues to cite this as a positive influence.
