Worst or Best -- Part Deux

Submitted by Enjoy Life on

So, MGOBLOGGERS, what does RR's record need to be 5 years from now to still be the coach in year 6 and what does his record have to be at the end of 10 years to be one of the best M coaches??

Please include: Win %, B10 Champs, and MNC

(I'm giving RR at least 5 years because he didn't really get to recruit a full class this year with his type of player.)

What do you mean he didn't get to recruit HIS players?

He has a great class, top 10 material, and it is FULL of lil' buggers and a pair or mobile QB's.  What more do you want out of it?

I think the poster meant last year because this years recruiting class isn't on the field (and isn't full) yet.

I think he needs to have at least 8 wins for 2010, a 10 win season by 2011.  I don't see him getting fired if that happens.

That being said, I will be disappointed if we don't win a bcs bowl by 2012.

I've noticed that the RRod defenders on this board (I am too) are really sensitive these days, and are jumping all over posts that aren't really even criticizing RRod, just asking a reasonable question.

The "RR defenders" likely get riled up because the RR critics are taking a sample set of 7 games in a year that any rational person thought would be about .500 at best and making a case that maybe RR isn't all that great a coach.  It's ridiculous - 'the spread' isn't a magic potion.  Months of internet blather hashed and rehashed not just RR's year 1 to year 2 records, but most every other new coach's year 1 to year 2 improvement as well.  None of this should really be a surprise.

It's fun to speculate about RR's future legacy, but meaningless.  It sucks to have a bad season.  Wearing the M gear around domers and Illini and Toledo won't be as smugly satisfying as usual.  But most of us were agreed last year that another year of dimishing returns from the status quo were unacceptable.  Change is hard - because of the very sucky pain we're suffering now.  I'm sad RR isn't an instantly-successful wizard on the sideline in the manner he is on the recruiting trail, but I'm not disappointed in the decision to hire him.  Not in the slightest.

And I'm not really concerned that someone on the internet is positing that he's the worst UM football coach in 50 years.  It's a meaningless Drew Sharp-level assessment.

should be right at 8 games.  I think in 2010 it should be 10.

Those seem reasonable to me and I am one of the people who thought that this season would go about as it has, fwiw.  One handicapper I know and respect (who also HATES Michigan) looked over the roster the other day and said he would guess 9-3 for 2009.

As far as what it would take for Rod to get fired, I think we would have to be performing pretty poorly around 2011-2012.  2011 is when the current class will be seniors and his first full class will be juniors.  They are both pretty loaded and Michigan should be competing for a Big Ten championship and possibly a MNC by then.

I just really, really, really, hope we land Big Will.  Mike Martin and Will Campbell in the middle in 2010 and 2011 will crush souls.  If LaLota and Roh pan out, it will be 2006 d-line redux.

I think that RichRod would get fired if he has a losing season in 2009 and 2010.  I think it's very unlikely that will happen though.  I do agree that this season has sort of raised the expectations for future years.  The Michigan nation will have less patience for 8-4 seaons after sitting through a season like this.

Right, if we have a losing season in 2010, I think he's gone. I think that as long as we're on an upward trajectory (about .500 next year, 8 wins in 2010), I'll be comfortable with the trajectory of the program.

I feel like 7-5 should be the minimum for an acceptable performance for next year; we're returning almost everyone and we have a good replacement for Morgan Trent.  The quarterback thing will still be an issue, but we won't be doomed by a single QB injury.  Also, we'll probably get three weak teams to play us next year, so we can go >.500 OOC.

9 wins ought to be okay for 2010.

RichRod won't get fired if he dips below this, although a 5 win season in '09 and a 6 win season in '10 would probably do him in at the end of 2010.  A repeat of this season in '09, which is incredibly unlikely, might get him kicked out just because it would take severe incompetence.  We are sort of locked into his regime for now.

He needs at least one national championship, probably about 1/3 of the conference championships, and a > .500 record against 3/4 of Mich State, Ohio State, Penn State, Notre Dame to be considered borderline great.  Needs around .75 win %, less if he gets more championships.  Bo didn't get an MNC, but he rescued the program and built the foundation for future success, which is why he gets a pass on that.  For the record, I think Lloyd will be considered a great coach who went downhill later in his career; an MNC and the initial success will outweigh later problems.

I concur with all/most of the above.

RR needs to be in the 10+ wins within 5 years and good wins against MSU and osu with a big caveat -- what is M going to schedule for non-conference?

Most B10 schools will schedule 4 almost sure wins. That means you only have to go 4-4 in the B10 to end up 8-4. Not really that hard.

If M schedules harder non-conference games (even though some would like this), it will be asking for disaster.

BTW, I would like nothing more than for RR to run the table or get 4 out of the remaining 5 and make me look like a total a$$hat.
