Who's left on the 2012 QB Recruiting Board?

Submitted by detrocks on

Assuming that the recent speculation that we're out of it for Kiel and Mauk and that Tom VH has reported that we're out of it for Coney, the only uncommitted QB on the 2012 Offer Board that is still looking at Michigan is Devin Fuller-- and my guess is that we're looking at him as much as an ATH as a QB).  Additionally, the backups that werer mentioned most often-- O'Connor and Appleby (who apparently didn't do well enough at camp to earn an offer) are also gone.

With that in mind, are there any other potential QB offers on the horizon?   Or does it look like we're going to wait and see if anyone emerges during the season (like Mike Simpson?)?   I'm not up-to-date on any under the radar prospects that we might be looking at or people on the board might like, so any thoughts would be appreciated!

Probably going the wait-and-see if someone blows up route. Haven't really heard of any other QBs being close to offers.

we will steal a guy at the last minute like we did with Bellomy . A guy who would love to go to Michigan who just didnt get a offer till the last minute and decommits from another school and chooses us

The coaching staff is going to go after an elite QB, but if they can't get one a quarterback might not be taken in this class. QB depth is fine for the near future so why not use a scholorship on a position of need instead.

I think Fuller is the perfect target for our coaches if we don't land Kiel & Mauk.  The kid's film is quite sick, kinda like a Denard 2.0.  He's stated that he'd be willing to play something other than QB "for the right program."  So IMO, bring him in as a QB and see what happens.  Worst case scenario we'll have Morris coming in 2013 & a super-stud athlete who can play all over the field.  I recently read a comment from him that UM among a few others are recruiting him the hardest, so our coaches must be thinking something similar to my opinion.  But maybe not, what the heck do I know?  He's never seen the school but seems quite interested, so you know our ace recruiters are puttin' in work.  I REALLY want him to go blue, & frankly think he'll end up a better QB than Mauk.  Yes, even despite his tecmo bowl stats.  Not to mention, I think our coaches found an uncut jewel in Bellomy.  Bring in Fuller!!

I agree with the most part that a team should take a QB every year, if we don't get Fuller, I think this year should be an exception.  With so much talent in other positions having interest in Michigan (and having Morris for next year's class), I would be OK not taking a QB this year.  Just seems like a waste to just put a warm body on the roster.  Would they be any better than an experienced walk-on at this point?

...is we don't take anyone.

Fuller is the wild card.  If Hoke sells him on the chance to play QB, will he jump at it?  Maybe, who knows.  But other than Kiel or Mauk, none of the other guys seems to have sold the coaches on their worth for a roster spot.

I don't like missing out on a QB any year, but if we are going to do it, this is the year to do so...extra  DT/DE?  Yes, please.  And with Bellamy coming now and Morris in the future, the damage is minimal.

None of our high profile targets are still on the market, really, but I guess I'm in the minority in thinking that Michigan will still take a QB or an ATH who can play QB like Fuller.  They've done it for 14 years straight, so I don't see why they would stop now.

The Voytik kid from Tennessee might be worth an offer, or you might see the coaches toss out an offer to Appleby or Blackburn and try to flip them, or perhaps wait for an up-and-comer who's not really on the radar.

and I am confident we will take a qb this year.  A player who blows up his senior year, somebody we steal with some snake oil, or at least an in state qb who otherwise would be going to the mac.

pushing for a kid like Fuller if they thought he was interested. Hoke really seems to like versatility and a kid as talented as him could play anywhere in either backfield if he wanted.

They are going to wait and see who has a nice senior year and offer them after their season.  We probably end up with Fuller or a guy we haven't heard of yet.

This years signee would be basically an emergency QB in my eyes. Especially if DG gets a redshirt. We have so many other needs. Honestly with Morris 100% committed, DR validating his talent last year, and DG's measurables and improvement; I would have to say QB is by far our strongest of all positions and in least need of a recruit this year. I'd like them to use that scholarship as more of like a NFL team that uses its first round pick on best talent available. Possibly the trio of DT's or the Banner/Diamond/Kalis trio.

I'm just as giddy as the next MGoBlogger for the arrival of Morris, but don't you think it's a little premature to be saying QB is our strongest position right now? He just finished his sophomore year of high school. There are so many things that can change/go wrong over the course of two football seasons. I'm not saying don't be excited, the future certainly is bright, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

I think the QB situation fits well with how crowded our class is getting.  They can slow play Fuller a little and see what shakes out with the class size, WR recruiting, and QB recruiting.  Think of these situations:

  • If they run out of spots (PLEASE take two true DTs!) it isn't the end of the world to pass on a QB this season.
  • If they don't sign a solid WR or two it makes even more sense to go after Fuller so that he can move to WR if needed.
  • If a QB blows up their senior season you can make a run at them if you have room.

I think Fuller is a great insurance policy at both QB and WR/Ath, but I would wait to see what happens at more critical positions and how they're going to fit all these guys into this class without pulling a Saban.

I would love to take Fuller, the kid could be a star at multiple positions. He really would be the best case scenario at this point IMO. Unless we flipped somebody with the snake oil, or somebody emerges during the season.

Does anyone know if Fuller has gone to any big camps or anything? And if so, how he performed there? I don't recall hearing anything about him in any 7-on-7s or anything like that. I just remember hearing that he plans on visiting Michigan soon. Man would I love him to wear that maize and blue uni.

how Denard does in the O this year.  Hard to see him visiting & sayin that unlees they have said they'd give him a shot @ QB 1st.  Be foolish not to.

I'm surprised they are being so honest as to say they see him ultimately as a db.  most schools would not & that he is still visiting is great.  No harm giving him a shot at QB 1st and it gives depth w/out a qb transfering.  If they land him, instead either he is next Denard or they have a super db or wr who is one of top athletes in U.S.

Former teamate of Chris Bryant; he's listed on rivals as a dual threat 6' 3", 185. He's got decent size if he could bulk up redshirt year and if QB doesn't work out for him, he would be an ideal candidate for a position switch.....

Thoughts???

I know it has been mentioned on this board a few time, but I am totally for not getting a QB in this class.  I don't believe the whole you need X # at a given position for each recruiting class...especially when you have reinforcements in the pipeline.  Assuming Gardener gets his redshirt from last year, we are in great position over the next couple years at the position.  Having Morris already locked up give us some security there.

Further, given how strong we stand with some 4 and 5 start O-line, D-line, and DB prospects right now, I say go for the best talent available.  The recruiting class is already at "win" status as it stands right now.  Let's go after some top level talent across the board at any position and make it an epic class.  This class has the opportunity to be one of the greatest hauls of defensive talent UM has ever reeled in...I say keep that train a rollin.  There will be no shortage of QBs and high level running backs (assuming we dont pull in Dunn) to offer in the coming years, especially if we build a meat machine up front to protect them.

We can focus on skill positions next year, and then start building out more evenly distributed classes as we move forward.
