What SOS metric does the CFP Committee use

Submitted by UMFanstuckinOhio on
This is a very important question to help determine who the 4th playoff team may be. RPI has UM SOS way higher than does ESPN. So do we relly know what metric system the CFP uses.

UM in a good spot to compete for the 4th spot in the playoff. ESPN Stats and Information Michigan dropped to eighth in SOR after its loss Saturday to Ohio State, but it barely budged in FPI. The Wolverines rank third in FPI and would be favored by nearly two points against every team expect Alabama and Ohio State on a neutral field. http://www.espn.com/espn/now?nowId=21-0594560627079385932-4

The CFP guidlines states the following. "Strength of schedule, head-to-head competition and championships won must be specifically applied as tie-breakers between teams that look similar;" So UM wins two of the three tiebreakers.

we probably would be jumped by the b10 champ, but who knows. The best thing that can happen is Va Tech plays a perfect game and Colorado exposes Washington and both underdogs win. That would put 3 big ten teams in position to be in cfp which is great just cuz and we might even be third past the big ten champ given we have the head to head so we get a second shot at you know who.. I know the committee goes for non rematches but who doesnt wanna see that one? (and OSU played both b10 champ game teams)

Poll has become irrelevant...To many coaches voting for personal reasons or conference affiliation and often there ranking is so out of whack that nobody really respects the Coaches poll,  or the AP for that matter because most writers have regional or conference ties and upvote or down vote whatever benefits their favorite team/conference it

What criteria does the selection committee use to rank the teams?
The committee selects the teams using a process that distinguishes among otherwise comparable teams by considering conference championships won, strength of schedule, head-to-head competition, comparative outcomes of common opponents (without incenting margin of victory) and other relevant factors that may have affected a team’s performance during the season or likely will affect its postseason performance.

Selection committee members have flexibility to examine whatever data they believe is relevant to inform their decisions. They also review a significant amount of game video. Among the many factors the committee members consider are strength of schedule, head-to-head results, comparison of results against common opponents and conference championships won. The playoff group has retained SportSource Analytics to provide the data platform for the committee’s use. This platform allows the committee members to compare and contrast teams on every level possible. Each member evaluates the data at hand, and then the individuals will vote to produce a group decision.
