What Dave Brandon Changes Do You Want to Get Rid of After He Is Gone?

Submitted by M-Dog on
This is the flip side of stephenrjking's post about what Brandon changes you would keep after hs is gone.

If you could start clean, what specific Brandon changes would you get rid of after hs is gone?

Here is my list off the top of my head:

- Ira J. Whatever Head Coaches.

- Big games against big opponents . . . in Dallas, without the band.

- Absolutely no App State III.

- Charging for every last damn thing.

- "Dynamic" pricing that goes up but never goes down.

- Uniformz that are NOT about "the kids love them" but are about having new merchndise to sell.

- Drowning out the band with piped-in rawk music.

- Referring to Michigan as a "brand" as if it were Pampers.

- Adidas.

- Orwellian double speak . . . "probable concussions" and "retail activations".

- Film study with assistant coaches.

- Having the entire country know who your AD is, and not for the right reason.

I like the Football uniforms and hope they keep coming.

The more WD uniform update threads, the better baby. Who doesn't need more jerseys, socks and receiver gloves?

Eh, I don't think the training really started with Obi-Wan.  He got one rudimentary lesson with a lightsaber and the extent of the rest of his training was "use the Force, Luke."  It's three years between then and the beginning of The Empire Strikes Back, during which Luke wasn't doing much of anything, and barely any time at all between that and Return of the Jedi.  Yoda started him basically at the beginning.

Right. Luke goes back to Dagobah and Yoda tells him he knows everything he needs to know about the Force. Lesson 2 was apparently defeating the greatest Sith of the age. It would be like beating Lebron James in basketball to make varsity on your high school basketball team.

I never did quite get the whole point of "the force" - it was kind of religious and spiritual but the whole point of learning it was so you could kill better and drop a bomb in a death star full of people?

And why didn't somebody just pull out a machine gun against one of those lightsabers?

High tech age indeed

Did that ever actually happen?  I was wondering why we are never the "home team" in bowl games.

Other than the Rose Bowl which alternates the "home team" between the B1G and the Pac 12 every other year, I can't remember the last time we wore home blues.  I have to go back to the 2002 season bowl game against Florida for the last time that I recall.

That SUCKS.  The Michigan home uni is a classic that we should wear as often as possible.  But who cares about something as trivial as Michigan traditions when there's a buck to be made.

Add that to the list of things where the AD sticks his finger in the eye of Michigan fans because they don't really matter to him other than their wallets.  I swear, if there was money to be made dressing up like Ohio State, Brandon would do it.

Any these uniforms sacred?  I thought they were just uniforms.

I would do away with the legends jerseys.  Let the kids have there own numbers and make their own marks.  I would though also like to see us use our standard uniforms more often.  If they want to do something different, where throwbacks.  No need for a different uniform look just to make some more dollars.  Of course, that tactic wouldn't work at all if enough folks just wouldn't fall for it and buy them.

What do you mean, "being the first to cut down Final Four nets"?

Syracuse's CJ Fair cutting down a net for a Final Four berth on 3/30/13, one day before Michigan would beat Florida and do the same. Final Four's have gotten championship rings for 40+ years, why not cut down nets as well?

We're probably stuck with the Ira J. Harrris type things since some money changed hands and some paperwork was probably signed.  The MGoLawyers can chime in if there is a graceful way to get out of it.

J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Head Football Coach

I wish the media was obligated to say that whole stupid thing in every broadcast just to add to the fun.

"The Wolverines are lead by 4th year J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Head Football Coach Brady Hoke"

Stanford's position is endowed, though I'm not sure sure if that was after Harbaugh left. At any rate, this isn't a huge issue for most people aside from some of the neurotic types who read this blog. Ya it sounds dumb but if you can pay Hoke's salary out of that money and free up general fund money for more assistant pay, sending the band more or benefitting other, I really don't see what the fuss is all things considered.

Not if you want to piss off the Harris family (or whomever gave the millions of dollars) by pulling their name from the seat.

Honestly, I totally forgot this until right now.  If people are honestly bent out of shape about it, I guess I'll need to recalibrate my rage meter because this doesn't even register.

It's not that big a deal, but it just highlights that they'll try to sell anything.  It does not even matter that there is no connection to the thing and what they are selling relating to the thing.

It's like back when they sold "tracking stocks" during the dot com bubble.  There was no real connection, it was just a way to make a quick buck.

Why not?  Why don't people care about professors but, for whatever reason, care about coaches?  Let's be real here, are there blogs dedicated to Michigan academics a la MGoBlog?  No, absolutely not.  7 of the Ivy League schools coaching positions are endowed.  Stanford, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Duke and Boston College have endowed coaching positions.

Michigan State, Rutgers, Duke and Texas Tech are looking for sponsors for theirs.

Let's not pin this on Dave Brandon.

Well first of all I'm not sure what you mean by there is no connection to the thing? Harris is an alum, intimately involved in university operations, and has been a major athletic and academic donor for decades. Second, this is a new trend. Stanford, Duke, Northwestern, among others have all gone down this route, even among coordinators. It's not about selling stuff for the sake of selling stuff. If you have free money you use it instead of your own. With the Harris money, you free up the money that goes to Hoke for other things.

The naming of the coaching position isn't a big deal to me. If a rich guy wants to give you money for something so meaningless you take. Everyone praises Brandon for what he does for the other sports (ie not football hockey or basketball) but that money has to come from somewhere and if you can use other people's money for little to no cost, you do it.

I think a general culture/attitude change is all I want to see.
