Wednesday Bowl Post: What are we smoking right now?

Submitted by Doc Brown on September 1st, 2021 at 1:05 PM

Let's make this a weekly tradition. or not I probably will not remember. What are currently smoking/vaping?

I am currently working my way through some super lemon haze from Information Entropy. I typically stick to sativa strains. I enjoy the taste and the energy of this strain.

I also have some Obama Kush as well for night time chill time. Love the fully body high.

I don't know if they're available nationwide, but Mindy's gummies are tasty and reliable.  Further, you can really control your dose.  I like flower on occasion and usually trust the budtender's recommendation but Mindy's is a good choice for something to mellow you out after a day of chasing problems at work.

By the way...I cut way back on drinking this summer (prostate cancer might have helped with that decision) and have dropped around 10 pounds sticking primarily to cannabis.

Sorry about the diagnosis … did my doctoral thesis on PC.

I know if I stopped drinking beer and just had a few glasses of whisky instead I’d lose 10-15 lbs but I’d rather drink a case of beer AND have a few glasses of whisky.

the edibles just don’t hit me the same way

Stick with the bong.

To the OP been stuck in cheboygan for a minute getting the diesel on my sailboat repaired.  Unlike most of the northern Michigan towns I stay at (tc Charlevoix harbor springs bay harbor Petoskey) they actually have adult use stores here!

Been rocking the mem og and dosido (both livwell about 25% thc indica dominant) while I wait it out.

Cheers.

I am a distance runner and run at least two marathons a year (been averaging around 3:30-3:40). I don't smoke. Stick to vaping.

I'm not here to judge anyone.  If you want to vape, smoke, take edibles, whatever...have at it.  Life isn't all about doing only what's healthy.  Certainly what's enjoyable also comes into the equation otherwise we'd just eat, drink, and use substances based on function and not for pleasure.  We are not machines.  And, I'm sure vaping is in its infancy in terms of studies on its health impact.  Your discussion perks the scientist in me to dig into the research a bit, so I'll chime back in later if/when I have the chance to do that.  But, I'd hazzard a guess that vaping is not doing your running performance any favors and likely is having some negative impact.  The only potential benefit I see offhand (assuming you're vaping cannabis/oil) is for pain relief which may aid in rest & recovery and maybe the CBD for inflammation reduction.  But, I'd still guess it's a net negative on performance.

I am a scientist as well (molecular biology with a research focus on electronic structures of heme based metalloproteins).

I am actually moving towards vaping for pain relief and anti-inflammatory properties. I am also moving away alcohol, to which my consumption definitely increased during the pandemic shut down. I have a family history of alcohol abuse. I have since decreased my drinking drammatically from averaging easily two beers a night to maybe one beer a week. I don't vape that much anyways. Just after my weekly long run (anywhere from 10 miles to 20 miles) and once during Friday nights to wind down.

The unknown with vaping is whether a fraction of vapers will develop 'lung scarring' (interstitial lung disease, fibrosis type) over decades due to carrier. Hard to say, but it is enough of an unknown that I avoid it personally. But who knows.

as i'm sure you are aware, the cases of acute injury (EVALI) seems to have mostly melted away as people use better quality carts and avoid adulterated ones.

(so for now vaping clearly much less risk than smoking for everyone, but absolute risk still TBD)

oh I completely understand the risk involved. With the ents groups I started following on reddit, I have been sticking to the better reviewed carts (element live oil, claw, stiizy) and with producers that have less additives to the cart. With dry herb i regularly utilize a water pipe adapter to lower the temperature of the vapor and increase the humidity of the vapor.

That's a problem with some vaping, but it doesn't apply to things like solventless concentrates. I'll vape rosin or hash all day over carts. Or hash rosin. Dear, sweet hash rosin.

I think there are too many variables to say anything about the health risks of vaping, because it refers to so many different methods of use.

The more adulterated the product is, the more risks involved through the supply chain. Just like food.

It's a lot less complicated to squish some buds into rosin than it is to run a QWET/QWISO extraction, make sure the solvent is evaporated safely, add terpenes to replace the ones that were blown off with the solvent, get it into cartridges that are clean, and ship those cartridges safely.

Good for you man.  I think a lot of us drank a bit more during the lock downs!

I am a scientist as well (molecular biology with a research focus on electronic structures of heme based metalloproteins).

As someone who works in the sciences you probably know this, but I say it for the group who also may be reading along as a caveat...exercise science is an applied science which uses the scientific method to answer practical questions.  In this endeavor there is almost never a universal "yes" or "no" answer and it almost always depends.  Be wary of folks who give universal answers to exercise science questions.  So, you'd never say "bench pressing is good for you".  That would depend on things like the age, health status, injury history, load, volume, & frequency of benching to name a few.  Bench pressing might not be a good idea for a baseball pitcher with a lot of wear & tear on his shoulder.  It might be perfectly fine for an otherwise healthy 22 year old offensive lineman in football using proper technique and under certain load, volume, & frequency parameters. You get what I'm saying.  So, we'd be unwise to make a blanket statement such as "vaping cannabis is bad for running performance" or "vaping cannabis is good for running performance" because it likely depends on who's doing it, the dose and frequency with which they're doing it, and the timing in which they are doing it.

I am actually moving towards vaping for pain relief and anti-inflammatory properties.  I don't vape that much anyways. Just after my weekly long run (anywhere from 10 miles to 20 miles) and once during Friday nights to wind down.

After a quick look around there isn't much out there analyzing the effects of vaping cannabis on exercise performance, which is not surprising.  I can't find much past COPD patients.  But, the way you're describing it, using it twice a week in the evenings after a difficult run in a low to moderate dose...I'd be surprised if that had any negative impact on your performance in a measurable way.  I'm sure there's a point where the dose and frequency of using it would have a negative impact, but there isn't enough data to say what those are and it seems likely it would be a lot more frequent than 1-2 times per week at a low to moderate dose, so you probably have nothing to worry about.  That was a lot of words to say very little...sorry.

First off when I see the word " Bowl  "  mentioned on a football page  , drugs are not the first thing that comes to mind  .

I havent lost a loved one due to drinking , thankfully . I know many have though and agree a drinking thread on a sports group shouldnt happen either .

I have lost an uncle  to drugs (which is what this thread is about)( my uncle was unknowingly given drugs in his beverage before he went swimming , he drowned because of it ) and my mom due to Lung cancer because she could not stop smoking .

The human body is not made to inhale hot vapor or any kind of smoke .

Popular or not I will always speak out against smoking anything or using drugs  .

GoBlueBill, no one cares. And if you don’t care about this, then just don’t click on the link.

As adults were allowed to decide for ourselves what we want to do with our lives and accept the risks.

Also, this is ignorant. the human body has cannabinoid receptors in most tissues, many of which primarily bind to THC. As a species, we have evolved alongside marijuana to the point we have beneficial cellular pathways that respond to endogenous cannabinoids as well as THC. There are massive beneficial health implications from ingesting THC and CBD that were just now unlocking.

Popular or not I will always speak out against smoking anything or using drugs

Popular or not, I will also point out the evolution of our species has been inextricably linked to the use of drugs, psychedelics, and other mind altering substances.

now why don’t you tell us what you do regularly so we can ride in on our high horses and tell you why it’s wrong.

Blue Dream. Always. I have been puffing for 30 years and it's been my go to strain for the last 12 years or so. I love the older classic strains. Seems the point of the new ones is to get as much THC in your head as possible, but I like to be functional so I really don't ever smoke many the new strains (Gelato is good tho). I have tried a bunch but they never suit me.

Hindu Kush, Super Silver Haze, Hawaiian Kush, OG Kush, Jack Herer, Blueberry, Grad Master Kush, Strawberry Cough, BC God Bud,

100% … Blue Dream is also my go-to strain, such amazing sativa-leaning hybrid! Like you, I’m more old-school with my preferred strains: Sour Diesel derivatives, Durban Poison, Super Silver Haze, etc.  And like you, I almost exclusively vape raw ground flower… pure, unadulterated natural bud. And I’m in the shape of my life at age 64, including in the midst of section hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. Simply stated, vaping raw flower is NOT a big health risk.

Jolly edibles had a partnership with Short's Brewing that's fun. The mule beer ones are sativa. Also Treetown gummies had a nice sativa called Energize, and in some of the comments, some people swear they use them instead of coffee, which I would definitely not recommend. Having one while golfing on the other hand...

I am happy to report I'm smoking absolutely nothing.  And havent been since October, 2008 when I quit (yes I know OP you're not referring to tobacco necessarily) for the last time.

13 years clean from cigs.  Now that's a GREAT feeling!

congrats on quitting smoking. (as everyone knows) smoking is stunningly harmful. What a few people might appreciate less is how smoking specializes in contribute to diseases that cause particularly bad (and drawn out) decreases in quality life...like emphysema but also peripheral vascular disease (bad circulation to arms/legs), strokes, oral cancers (cigars) etc.

I quit before my senior year in college. I was up to 2 1/2 packs a day, Yul Brynner-style. That's what happens when you start smoking at age 13. If they suddenly discovered that smoking isn't bad for you after all, I'd be back on the sauce in no time. But until that happens, I don't smoke anything, tobacco, pot, peace pipes......nothing.
