Way OT - Michigan Musician Joshua Davis on The Voice

Submitted by blueball97 on

While this certainly is not related to any UM team or sport in any, it is Michigan related. My brother in law, Joshua Davis, is one of the final 6 on the Voice. While not a fan of any reality TV, this has been fun to be a part of and watch. He is part of the Earthwork Music Collective, and he represents an impressive collection of folk/blue grass/swing/blues/jazz musicians from all over Michigan. Give a listen and support him if you feel inclined to do so. Your support is very much appreciated.

Either way, congrats to him.  A friend, who's a Michigan alum, but we didn't meet until here in NYC, is a rabid fan of the show, got me to watch, and I was pleasantly surprised to find how the singers on this show are allowed to be unique and not all bred and groomed to become Generic Big Pop.  He has a wonderful quality, a folky kind of approach, acoustic guitar and all, and we're both big fans.  [For those of you who don't watch the show, they've had terrific contestants this year, so making it to the top 6-- as different as they are from one another-- is magnificent.]

I usually have a problem with competitions in the arts (apples & oranges thing), but I convince myself that shows like this allow off-the-beaten-path performers to get broader exposure and the chance to find their audience.

EDIT:  Did you add that 2nd paragraph?  If so, I'm glad I took so long to post my reply so you'd have a chance to do so.

I knew (at an acquaintance level) a couple other members of Earthwork (Rachel Davis and Seth Bernard) growing up in the Cadillac / Lake Michigan level.

Pretty cool having seen them play as kids/teens and now seeing them as professional musicians. Talented group of artists, and great to see Joshua's success on The Voice.

I have followed Steppin' In It for yrs. The best times of my life came in earlier 00's discovering the band playing at Bell's. Always had to do some drunken hippy dancing when they came to town.

I've seen this guy play multiple times with his band,"Steppin'in it" at a pretty sweet bar
in Lansing called "The Green Door." I saw them play at Rothbury festival in 09 as well. Needless to say, he's a great guy and a great musician.
