Walk on + solid D = repeat of 97

Personally, I'm pulling for Sheridan much in the way I pulled for Kirkus at WR when he was a Lion.  Historically, we have had other QBs who worked hard, improved and helped lead the team to something great. The most obvious is probably Griese, who was a walk on his freshman year, unrecruited for his weak arm  I know many de-value his QB skills, but his career speaks for itself; three victories over OSU, rose bowl MVP, probowl, super bowl, etc.

Additionally for those who can remember, Harbaugh was told as a freshman that he only had a scholarship because his dad was a coach, and that he should not expect to see the field. Throwing out the crap he said later. . .(if you can). . . Harbaugh was a hell of a quarterback at Michigan.  I think he led the nation in passer rating his Junior year.

If the D is as solid as reported, I see no reason to avoid optimism

"McGuffie and Shaw are two guys that will not be redshirted - they'll play," the coach said. "They've done enough to convince us that they can contribute as freshmen, and I think as much mentally as physically. The biggest drawback for a freshman coming in is, can they mentally handle the schemes and the pace, all the things that go on with it? Those two have shown that they can.

eeeeeeeeeeee!!! also,

McGuffie's YouTube highlights have made the Texan the most anticipated Michigan running back since Mike Hart -

WTF? no one was anticipating hart, unless you're from NYS

Well I was, after having seen him run wild at the Carrier Dome in the state title game his jr. year...He also had pretty much the greatest career of any HS running back ever (most TDs, 2nd most yds all time, etc.) but remember Max Martin was considered M's best running back in that class, but now he is riding the pine for the Crimson Tide

Yeah Griese was a walk-on, but he was in his 5th year swith the program.  And the o-line was pretty good in front of him.  And I doubt that the defense this year will be as good as either 1997 or 2006.  (But I'm still excited about thde D this year.)

I guess, technically, Griese was on a team that won the Super Bowl, but he was 1-3 on the entire season and playing behind Super Bowl MVP John Elway, so I think you might be giving him a little too much credit for that victory.

Unless of course you give credit to Drew Bledsoe, Matt Cassel, and Rohan Davey for Tom Brady's victories, which I'm sure you won't.

1997:

  • not Lloyd's first year
  • not an almost entirely new staff
  • not a dramatic scheme shift
  • not nearly as much turnover on the offensive side

I'm guessing you're not trying to claim Michigan's going to win an MNC this year, but there as many differences between '97 and '08 as there are parallels.
