Video replay in Michigan Stadium

Submitted by Section 1 on

It's awful.  The in-stadium video boards show few enough replays, and virtually no replays of disputed/disputable plays.  There's almost no use of any slow motion replay.

All of these effects, once limited by Conference rules, have now been allowed.  But Michigan Stadium video operators, always behind our rivals in East Lansing and Madison (having seen both for myself) and to some extent in Ohio Stadium, seem to have done nothing to utilize the new freedom granted by the Conference.

Time for Michigan Stadium to get with the 21st century for video replay.

Did they replay a single penalty call?

There is one other limiting feature as far as I know; that the Stadium boards don't routinely use the boradcast tv feed; they are using their own video sourcing, which is probably fewer cameras with less-capable replay technology than what ABC/ESPN would utilize.  It's generally a very poor, tight view of plays where you can't see much more than a ballcarrier.

I'm happy to give them time to upgrade to the latest Conference dictates on what can now be shown.  But I'm also right about the fact that the status quo is not good and anyone who has been to games at Camp Randall and Spartan Stadium will have seen more extensive use of replays.

Your wife every Thursday afternoon.

I kid, I kid...

But my impression was the same for the BTN broadcast - I was wishing for more replays numerous times throughout the game.  Wanted to check player #'s and make judgements about our new players, etc.

The B1G just approved the new rules 3 days ago. Maybe we give the video operator some leeway to change their procedures within 72 hours?

Also, not sure, but I highly doubt there were any really crucial replays In a game decided by 50 points.

Calm down. The only issue I recall is that they put up the replay of the wrong play after a large gain which I kind of wanted to see a replay of. This didn't ruin my afternoon like it did yours. The scoreboard operators had some issues with yardage/score in the beginning of the game, but they got better. Sometimes there just isn't enough time between plays to get the replay up either.

I am intrigued to see what their protocol is for controversial/challenged plays is. You can't really complain about that for the CMU game as there weren't any such plays, but hopefully they allow them.

figured out that if they want to continue to fill the stands, they may need to think about fan experience and what is keeping them at home. The addition of wifi, and better replays fixes a few of them. Students can stay connected. MGoBloggers can liveblog. We can see the replays you can watch on TV at home.

Now, if they'd just let in coolers and thermoses like the old days ...

Anyway, MAYBE re-investing some of this money back into the average fan experience is the right thing to do.

(They still need to fix scheduling ...)
