Value of ESPN +, Rivals insider forums

Submitted by BIGdevotee on August 9th, 2021 at 9:59 AM

I noticed ESPN (adam rittenberg etc.) has recently put out a few articles on Michigan athletics (from UM's NHL draft dominance to Harbaugh's job security) on ESPN +. Can anybody vouch for the value of paying $6 a month for ESPN +? Is it worth it? I already subscribe to the Athletic and the coverage is awesome. Not so sure about the value of rivals insider stuff though either.... Any tips appreciated!

Thanks!

There is so much quality free content out there that the only reason I would say to pay for it would be to support the awesome writers that work for the companies you referenced above.

Would I pay $6/month for ESPN+? No, I don't think that's a good enough deal for me.

Would I pay $14/month for a Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+ bundle? Yes, I do, that is a good deal and one I use quite frequently.

ESPN+ is nice when Michigan Basketball plays their tune-up non-conference schedule not available anywhere else, other than that I wouldn't pay for either of them.

I set up google alerts and get a boat load of free Michigan content every morning.

I just canceled my ESPN+ subscription. I don’t think I’ve watched anything on there except for a few football games that weren’t on regular ESPN.

The Athletic is way better for Michigan content and really any sports content in general.

I would recommend getting a subscription The Athletic when they have a flash sale. I’m only paying $1/month for a year.

Actually considering signing up today b/c I miss reading Bill Connelly's cfb previews.

Although, now he does them by division instead of one for each team. So I'm still not sure it's worth it .... but can probably cancel after a month if I'm not using it, right?

Just me but its hard to justify paying for stuff like that for a few reasons:

1) There's already a bunch of great free content out there anyway.

2) If its really important, it'll make its way over to this blog by the end of that day anyway. I don't need to pay an extra $6/month to know this information only a few hours before everyone else does.

ESPN+ is good for draft analysis content but the real value is if you like soccer. MLS, Serie A, La Liga, Bundesliga, FA Cup, English Championship. I watch a ton of soccer so it’s worth it for me. Good for mid major football and basketball as well

Like others have said, if you bundle it with Hulu and Disney+, it's a no-brainer. It's really the first time I've had a multi-site subscription where I use all 3 platforms provided. I've also noticed that most in-depth or hot take articles on ESPN require the + account for access.

While not every article or story adds up to $6, it's really annoying to click on article headlines expecting to read a story and then find out a paragraph through you need to "sign up" or "log in".

As for Rivals? Not only would I discourage someone for signing up during such a lull point for the program but I'd say the 2-3 articles that are put out on MGoBlog a week, along with the ultra-reactionary MGoBoard, there's literally no need for that service unless you want to be the person reporting the news back to other people.

For anyone that has a Verizon cell phone, one of their unlimited data plans (Play More I think) has the Disney+, Hulu. ESPN+ bundle included.  If you need/want unlimited data on your phone anyway, it's a good deal.

espn+ is great for some game streaming, but espn stopped being a place for good writing a long, long time ago, so i just bundle it with hulu and disney.

i go to the athletic for writing stuff, and it's worth every penny.

I don't see any value in it when you can likely get it all for free, just a few hours or maybe a few days later.  What analysis does Rittenburg offer that Seth or Brian doesn't?

Well it's not like you only get articles.

The amount of live sports content (esp. if you like hockey, soccer and/or mma) is INSANE on ESPN+. Absolutely worth the $60/year (it's cheaper if you pay for a full year at once).

I just finished reading a Bill C article about bounce backs from last year (yes, Michigan was projected as having a bounce back year) on ESPN+.

As others have mentioned, you can’t beat the bundle deal especially if you’re a fun of Marvel, Star Wars, or have kids because of Disney+.

The only reason why I have ESPN plus is because I watch UFC fights from time to time and they bundle it with the fights a lot.  Besides that, I wouldn't recommend it.  ESPN's content is usually clickbaity/#content type of stuff.  Not worth the read most of the time.  I will say that they do hide their best writers behind that paywall.  Bill Barnwell and John Gasaway to name a couple.

I have not subscribed to The Athletic but I'm considering it.  I bet their content is of a much higher quality.

I think today is the final day of the Athletic's 50% off deal for new subscribers. Worth it.

I originally subscribed to ESPN+ thinking I would watch some of the streamed games I couldn't ordinarily see. So far that hasn't been the case, but I have enjoyed their various draft coverage pieces.

I sell digital content for a living, so I'm a bit more sympathetic to paying for stuff, provided it's relevant and quality. I don't stream much entertainment at all,, but I probably subscribe to at least six different newspapers and am a sucker for a cheap introductory offer.

I watch a lot of UFC, so ESPN+ is a bargain in that regard.  I am pissed that they appear to have dropped rugby.  If you like college baseball and basketball, there's a ton of content on +.

I was actually unaware (until I read this topic) that there's some print media benefits to subscribing as well, not that I believe I'll take much advantage of that.

No one's mentioned time, which is my main reason. I spend enough time reading and listening about sports from free sites and podcasts. If I had more stuff to watch and read, the more time I would probably spend on it, which I would prefer not to - that is, until my teams start winning more :)
