USAToday running story about Buckeye Coach berating Kicker

Submitted by wisecrakker on

for wanting to take a water break during stretches.

"What do you need water for, Sunshine?" Coombs yelled. "We're stretching! And you're a kicker!"

Calling into question a player's toughness? Check. Demoralizing player during mundane task? Got 'em. Using a player's position in a derogatory fashion? Affirmative.

Coombs went for the football coach insult cycle by delivering a final death blow.

"Are you tired from stretching?" Coombs asked incredulously.

Here's video too

Editorial:  Obviously the reasoning behind this thread was lost to some of you.  I posted this to show how sensationalized the news has become. This is why the thread stated with "USAToday running story..."  I guess I had imagined a discussion of how the news over blows trivial incidents and everything at this level is recorded by any jackwagon with a Smartphone.  IMO the coach wasnt wrong to use the players position to motivate him, instead he needs to be aware not to do it when the whole world is watching and video taping it. Carry on. GoBlue.

Putting down a player just because he's a kicker is just plain wrong - has nothing to do with "pussification".  Putting down a player because he's drinking water is also wrong.  If a player needs water, then he needs water - don't deny him water.  The coach has no clue what the player is feeling - maybe the player actually NEEDS water.

Coombs was an idiot for doing that.  Damon Webb, if you see this, this guy recruited you - decommit now and GO BLUE!!

Meanwhile, star players, such as the long snapper, are getting preferential star treatment from Urb within the infamous circle of trust.  This single video is obviously the beginning of the end for Urb and OSU.

Coombs is saying the player needs to stretch because of his position. Neglecting stretching is basically the only way a kicker is going to get hurt. Coombs is looking out for him not belittling him.

I remember my football coaches calling our DL a bunch of "mental midgets" (his words, not mine).  They sort of did give up 200 ypg rushing, so anyway.

The OL was referred to us a the "big, dumb and uglies" (again, coaches' words).

The skilled position dudes were called "princesses" or "glory boys" (i.e. needing frequent manicures and bubble baths after games).

Kickers? Well, our DE was our punter and PK and with a 47 yd punting avg and hitting 70 yd FGs in game warms up, coaches didn't swear much at our kicker.

Aren't football practices supposed to be a barrage of pejoratives? Most of us back then became callous to name calling and beratement from adult coaches by the time we were sophomores (16 yrs old).  It doesn't lift you up, but at some point it didn't tear you down much either.

And water? If it was hot, we got water breaks. Otherwise, I remember it being mostly withheld until practice ended.

A good kicker should know not to take himself too seriously.

I have yelled much worse things in front of kids' parents, and they haven't said a darn thing.  Most people realize that when you're doing something wrong on a football field, you're going to get barked at for it.  There are certain lines you can't/shouldn't cross, but this is much ado about nothing.

Response to your "Edit:". Bullshit. You didn't make any comments about sensationalizing nonsense stories. You sensationalized the story yourself.
Carry on.
