University of Michigan / Ann Arbor are on a real roll here.  After Ann Arbor gets voted the #1 city in the U.S., UM repeats as the #1 public school in the U.S. and moves up into a tie with Duke for #21 overall (from #23 last year).  Duke and Michigan are tied for #12 overall in the U.S.

This is a very impressive accomplishment and I will do my best never to take it for granted that Michigan succeeds in the classroom, in the lab, in the community and on the field.

The only other B1G schools near the top were Northwestern at #28 and Wisconsin at #55.   Ohio State and Michigan State actually did pretty well at #86 and #149 respectively.

I always sort of laugh at Dartmouth which is usually laughably behind the rest of the Ivy League. It's kind of embarassing for them

#3 Harvard
#13 Princeton
#14 Cornell
#16 Yale
#18 Columbia
#19 Penn
#53 Brown

....

#169 Dartmouth

Ah OK - that makes sense.  There's nothing wrong with being a top-notch research university or 4-year undergrad school with hands-on professors and those certainly don't have to be mutually exclusive - it's just that those things primarily benefit different types of students.

Indeed -- it's hard to infer much from these rankings in terms of choosing an undergraduate institution. Brown is a bit more research-focused, especially in the health sciences, and they seem to be taking that more seriously in their new schools of public health and med school. That was my impression during my PhD interview there, at least. Beautiful campus, too, but their raw research output doesn't compare to somewhere like Michigan.

especially for those in programs such as Engineering, Ross, Computer Sciences, etc who should get good jobs right out of undergraduate school, and have a solid resume going to grad schools.

The rankings looks pretty accurate but I think Cal Berkeley is rising quickly in reputation as being at least even with Michigan as the top public university.

All very good schools. All very big and like UM you can get a terrific education or you can skate by. I mentioned Berkeley because they are really challenging Stanford, the gold standard, in the quality of programs (especially grad schools) and graduates they are producing.

Right now, I have one at UM and one going to Caltech. Each was the best choice for them based on areas of interest, culture, size of school, etc. There is no one right formula so these rankings are somewhat suspect and more directional in nature.

I never stood a chance to get into UM. Didn't really take high school seriously until my senior year and by then it was too late. Had to settle for a school of much less quality. Go blue!

I take less issue with the clunkiness of the link (though it should give you an idea of the validity of the poll) than I do with any notion that UM is the best public uni in the world. Never heard of QS rankings, but when every major/accepted rankings agency has UC Berkeley number one for 21 years in a row, it sounds foolish when UM athletes/fans continue to leap over UCB, UCLA, and UVA to lay claim to a distinction that is simply unfounded and unearned. It is, of course, entirely arbitrary debating academic rankings inside the tier ones, but outside of UM faithful, UM is not considered the best public school in the world, no matter how much I love them as both a child of UM alumni and a grad of UCB. Even further, I suspect UCLA will at some point leap UCB, which makes them even more formidable as recruiting opppnents, but for now Cal still has the most top ten programs in the world (private unis included) and are much more than "gaining quickly" in status. There's a geographical proximity disadvantage that UM will never be able to avoid, as far as these rankings go. Great school, but cringeworthy every time colleagues or Shane Morris incorrectly claims it as best.

are all pretty dumb and based on lots of ridiculous things. read about how northeastern invented a bunch of small classes and shot up the rankings, it is pretty funny.

that said, michigan a top school? sounds like this rating is a good one. :)
