I am a varsity high school coach in Metro Detroit, and I know coaches both at Almont and Denby. We always play Almont in our 4-way and a friend of mine coaches at Denby. Social media seems to not be painting the full picture. While Almont did dominate in the game, the fans/parents of Almont were brutal. Spitting, using racial slurs, and going onto social media to mock the lack of parents on Denby’s side. While Denby under no circumstance is justified for their actions, Almont is not innocent in all of this. A very ugly display of the worst sports can bring; especially between a small town team and a team from the east side of Detroit. For the record Almont is going to get run by LCC.

Doesn't sound like you'd be best equipped to give us the neutral take on the story either then.

I'd say that it's pretty obvious that there was some shit talked by the small town crew vs the Detroit crew, but I'd find it hard to believe that this was a one-sided affair because I wouldn't expect a Denby football team to be comprised of choir boys and saints.

It's a football team from a tough city? I for one wouldn't want to play football on a team with choir boys and saints because it's a sport that requires a dose of nastiness. I have also played sports in a big city and know that every team has a few guys who talk a fair game and it's not that uncommon for things to boil over. This is a sport that fosters aggression, it's built into the game, so you'll run into plenty of nasty effers and in a city it's different again because everyone's just a bit edgier than out in the country.

Back in 2006, I saw Denby play Cousino in a state playoff game - Division 1.  So yes, they used to be in the big division.

A more striking example: Detroit Southeastern played in the Division 8 playoffs last year!  In 2009, just 9 years prior, they made the Division 1 quarterfinals, barely lost to a Stevenson team that was state runners-up.

Definitely lots of enrollment losses within the Detroit PSL.  Charter schools, schools of choice, demographics of a baby bust, etc ......

Not surprising. Sad and unfortunate. I remember when they had to stop playing night games in the city league. I love Friday night high school football games.

Almont is an extremely dirty and disrespectful program. Ask anybody who plays them. Been putting up with them for years. Doesn’t make it okay to throw helmets and other equipment at fans and band members though.

Was actually there in the Almont section. Almont absolutely demolished Denby all game. Denby players started getting very dirty, and once the game was out of reach it started turning into a joke. There were some questionable calls against Denby, but most calls were warranted. The game needed to be called, because Denby spent the 4th quarter taking as many cheap shots as possible, and cheering about it. I did not hear any racist comments or spitting, though I could have missed that. The band was chanting “hard work” and continued it a bit obnoxiously as Denby players were walking by. This triggered the players. Almont fans are assholes and the players are dirty. It seems like both sides have completely different sides of what went down so we’ll probably never know.

I coached high school football for 27 years and enjoyed every minute of it. I retired from coaching 3 years ago and have to say that the last 10 years of my career I witnessed a massive uptick in the amount of parents reliving their childhoods through their kids. The entitlement, poor attitudes, and individualism became more and more prevalent. Everybody thought their kid was good enough to play at a Division I school. Sad to say that it will continue to grow.
