UConn Releases Depth Chart for Michigan Game
UConn depth chart for the game this Sat has been released. The official version can be found in the link below:
http://www.uconnhuskies.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/083010aaa.html
Couple points of note:
* Shoemate has not been able to crack the top two - currently listed as the third guy as TB (although with an OR)
* After the injury to their starting DE, the current lineup looks really small - one of the starting DE is 225 and his backup is 237.
* They are breaking in new Punters - both guys on the chart are redshirt Freshman.
* Same FG kicker as last year - who was pretty meh - 1/3 from 20-29, 4/9 from 40-49.
* 3 True Freshman, 8 Redshirt Freshman on the chart.
Do you see anything significant there?

lots and lots of Bantha Fodder. That's what.

I must be high, because I could have sworn he was one of the DE's injured for the year, yet they have him as the starting MLB.

He had knee surgery after an injury in one of their last games. But I guess he's recovered enough to play. Weird that they put him as a 259 pound linebacker after recovering from surgery.

They said maybe for the year i thought..that is weird. Does anyone have any news on that?

The UConn Blog thinks that the whole redshirt rumor was a trick by Edsall.

Here's the Greg Lloyd thread. The thought was that he'd be out for the season.
Maybe they were doing the misinformation thing? Either that, or just bad reporting? Naw... never.

UConn running alot to the ride side of the ball.

is the new zone left! Sweet!

That's me!
Seriously though, expect to see Roh lined up over that big dude on every third and long. My guess is that Shoemate isn't up to speed on their protection scheme yet, and with the number 2 QB out for (something) they aren't going to risk Frazier.

Look at the beef on that right side of the OL. Wonder what side they like to run at as the RG goes 6-7 325 and the RT goes 6-5 333. You'd expect that this guy (RG) would be at tackle with that height but they have him at guard. Must not be nimble or not very good at pass blocking. I'd bring some blitzes on this side during obvious passing downs to see how these bigger guys react.
Yeah I'm with the OP on the DE size. Kind of the game where a stable of RBs might come into use as we continue to maul their ends. Still I wonder with their size if they might be a little more nimble in regards to stopping the read option. Still when some of your LBs out-weigh your DEs I'd suspect that you'd have a problem with stopping the running game over the long haul.

It's not just the size at end, its the relative inexperience. Joseph (the bigger one) started all 13 games on one side, but Williams (smaller one) only has one start. Also, FWIW, Williams was second in the 100m in 2007 in Connecticut, so he's got some speed for a big guy.
The backups have one combined tackle in their careers. Michigan's got to squat on Williams early and often to force the help to him and bring everyone in the box. If they can make it happen, Michigan's speed on the outside is going to make life really difficult for UConn.

Now if we could simply compare the recruiting stars on our depth chart to the recruiting stars on their depth chart we will know who will win come Saturday.

for the visiting UCONN Huskies...
Crowd: "Who cares!"

The Uconn depth chart sports one 5* -- D.J. Shoemate; one 4* -- Zach Frazer; nine 3* and 34 2*, plus one walk on (at least).
The starters are Frazer, two 3*s and the rest 2*s.
This is about exactly what Utah looked like two years ago.
Michigan would appear to be more talented and definitely bigger.

I was being sarcastic in my post above, but after you posted this I find it unreasonably comforting.

UConn has some serious depth issues:
* Zach Frazer has the reputation for being injury prome - and there is nobody credible behind him at QB after Cody Endres' suspension (Box is an RFr).
* Three of the OL backups are RFr.
* Both CB backups are True Fr.
* Another True Fr is backing up at DT.
They have an experienced starting line-up, but if they sustain injury to their key starters then they don't have good options to plug the holes.

Hope the DEs learned to defend the Read Option .. and i hope they can catch a Cheetah named Denard
August 30th, 2010 at 4:25 PM ^
Why would you hope for that? That's the opposite of what we want!

After looking at the lineup, I think we match up rather well on both sides of the ball. We should certainly have no troubles dominating the LOS.
