Per Twitter: Malik Zaire to Florida

Submitted by The Baughz on

Just saw some posts on twitter saying Zaire has committed to the Gators. Looks like that game just got a little harder. I was hoping to face a guy with a lot less experience. Oh well. Was going to be a dog fight regardless who was at QB.

I don't think his addition is as big of deal as some had hypothesized. He's mobile yeah, but Franks could run as well. He's got a cannon yeah, but so does Franks. Franks has 6 inches on Zaire. Florida will now be choosing between a freshman or a guy who knows the playbook less than a freshman and has less rapport with receivers than a freshman. It's still kind of pick your inexperience poison if you're Florida.

You are right on the money doc. Are defense is going to be all over who ever Florida starts. They are'nt going to be able to do boo. A Michigan offense should be able to move the ball and score points. It is on the o-line to move people off the ball, Speight to be accurate with his passes and to read  defenses and for are running backs to run all over teams. The defense will be doing there job this year once again. Lets see what the offense does. Play four quarters and move the ball and score on everyone. With Nordin and Harbaugh calling plays this offense should at least get a field goal on every drive. Last year losses were on the offense period. A michigan team with the number one defense in the country should never ever lose a game period. Are defense will be right there this year so let's see what you got offense.

Normally I would brush off a misspelling here or a grammatical error there. However, when the mistakes are so plentiful that it actually hinders my ability to understand what is being said, a grammar nazi is warranted. He only pointed out the most egregious mistakes. He left alone the misplaced apostrophe and the misuse of their/there.

"A Michigan team with the #1 defense in the country should never lose a game." Well that's all fine and dandy to think about. But Michigan has lost 3 of the last 4 games with that #1 defense. Now let's also not forget that we return only one starter from that #1 defense so the likelihood that we repeat as the top statistical defense is pretty unlikely. But fascinating theory you have there to go along with some pretty bad spelling and grammar. Maybe tone down on being such a homer though and be a bit more realistic.

situation, but Coach Nussmeier hasn't been exactly lighting it up as an OC. Even with a young defense, Coach Brown has the advantage over Florida's offense.

Here are Zaire's career numbers:

http://www.espn.com/college-football/player/_/id/550967/malik-zaire

CAREER STATS

SEASON CMP ATT YDS CMP% YPA LNG TD INT SACK RAT RAW QBR ADJ QBR
2016 11 23 122 47.8 5.30 22 1 0 3 106.7 13.7 18.3
2015 26 40 428 65.0 10.70 66 4 0 2 187.9 81.1 86.5
2014 21 35 266 60.0 7.60 49 1 0 1 133.3 65

He wasn't a full time starter, but he has less than 1,000 yards passing over 3 seasons, and look at his QBR.

Franks doesn't have much experience and he's going to have to go against a young, but complicated and athletic defense. On defense, Florida lost some key players. You never know because it's the first game of the year, but Michigan shouldn't have too much trouble.

Michigan against mobile qbs = not good news for us. I was starting to think Don Brown might have changed that against o$u. And then the 4th quarter happened and the all too familiar struggle against mobile qbs was back.

The bigger issue in last year's OSU game was like many other games the offense could not sustain a drive or run a four minute offense to salt away the game. The D was gassed by the fourth quarter. Don't use that game as an example for not being able to shut down a mobile QB.

If the UM defense was gassed in the 4th quarter against OSU, then Harbaugh needs to get a new S&C staff. When OSU got the ball with 10:28 left in the 4th quarter the UM defense had only been on the field for 19:42. UM's offense had been on the field for 30 minutes. If the UM defense was tired that's piss poor conditioning.

Correction: Colorado was very scary for the first quarter. Even with their starter still in, they were thoroughly dominated in the final three quarters (save one 70+ yard bomb). The starter went 10/12 for 164 yards and 2 TDs in the first quarter with 31 yards on 9 carries. Lead 21-7 After the end of the first quarter until he left with an injury he went 6/14 for 97 yards and a TD (70 yards came on one play mind you) and 9 yards on 12 carries. He left midway through the 3rd with a 31-28 deficit. Even with the starter still in, Michigan outscored Colorado 24-7 after the end of the first quarter. They weren't at all scary. Aside from a 70 yard bomb, Colorado couldn't do anything offensively. Their QB had 36 total yards on 22 plays without that bomb. That's HARDLY scary

JT Barrett averaged 261.5 yards per game in 2016, and he gained 249 yards against Michigan. So the defense held him a little under his average, but Barrett still led his team to 137 total yards of offense in the 4th quarter while rushing for 71 yards himself.

Kudos to the defense for stiffening up in the redzone, and holding their offense to FG attempts, which their kicker missed his 2nd chip shot of the day.

Missed FGs are a part of the game, we missed 3 against Wisconsin.  At the end of the day, 14 of their 17 points in regulation were obtained by the defense.  So our defense struggled with a mobile QB to the tune of 3 points allowed.  Penn State is another team with a decently mobile QB and we allowed 10 points to them.  Yeah we struggled with Colorado, IIRC we were without two of our best players in Lewis and Charlton.  We also struggled early on against FSU, again we were without one of our best players (and spread busters) in Peppers.  A healthy Michigan defense did not struggle against any offense last year, mobile QB or otherwise.

He might not even be the starter. He couldn't start at ND. I'm not concerned. I see the SEC changed the rules just for Florida's benefit.
