TV timeouts & ads

Submitted by tasnyder01 on October 8th, 2018 at 10:24 PM

6 ads before the break in the latest column. Ads now popping up in the middle of comments. Heck, probably an ad after this.

I know that this supports the great writers on this site, and I DONT begrudge them for the ads. That said, it is a little shameless to harp on TV ads while doing a similar thing here, no? I hope *not* to die on this hill, but rather to see if others have similar sentiments. I may be wrong, or not privy to Brian's insights. But barring that knowledge, all i know is "old man yells at ads. . . then inserts his own." I mean, I can't be the only one baffled by this right?

Brian? Seth?

I think he has a point.  There are ads that appear in the middle of user comments on this site now.  Like, in between paragraphs of a user's comment.  That's nuts, and really turns me off.  I've been seeing it on mobile for a week or 2 now, and I just saw my first one on the desktop in this comment section, of all places.

Edit:  This is what I'm talking about.

I know that Brian owns the site but we all have an emotional piece of it.  How about a little transparency?  Perhaps a superficial accounting of revenues, expenses, salaries, etc would help us know whether to accept the nuisance of the ads or to be willing to pay a flat fee for an ad-free site, without making someone filthy rich?  And for that matter, add the V.3 website, which I still feel is inferior to the previous version and wonder if it is due to a lack of investing proper $$$.

Wow is this your hill to die on?

I would cry with happiness if the B1G went to no full screen interrupt your broadcast commercials with some side bar commercial pictures instead.

Just get a bigger screen?

Seth noted in the past couple of weeks that they were dealing with 2 issues.

1.  The way the ad-counters were working they were generating less revenue.  (Think they were working on straightening this out.)

2.  Trying out ideas to use some of the white space for ads either to offset #1 above or just in general.  It is very much a work-in-process and some of the ads were getting a bit intrusive while they worked things through.

There's a huge difference between having enough ads to pay the bills and make some profit compared to having enough ads to pay bills and make obscene profit, when even eliminating a small portion of ads would yield a large-but-not-obscene profit.

So, no, it's not shameless.

But it is shameless for you to whine about this on the same day Ace resigns, given that Brian has paid him (with ad and other revenue) and supported him through years of health problems and lower content/production than a healthy employee would produce.

Here’s my snowflake about television and the length of games. I understand that ads allow me to watch football games from the comfort of my living room. I am willing to put up with the ads because I just fast forward through them anyway.

What has been bugging me lately is all the superfluous fluff between the ads and the actual game. I am so over crowd scenes, promos for the network’s shows, stupid trivia questions, AFLAC, talking heads in the booth, shots of the cheerleaders, dance team and the band, flyovers, skydivers, nearby restaurants, tailgate parties, and extended replay reviews. Just cut all that crap out and show the damn game. If you have to show ads, do it during the replay reviews and the injury timeouts.

Cheerleaders and the band and the fans are part of the event. Show them in between the 20 minutes of halftime commercials.

Now get off my lawn.

I'm with you. The one that gets me is when there is a break on the field and they are going to commercial, they play a video of the action from the game as a transition. I know it isn't long, but damn that annoys me. If you have to go to commercial just do it already so we can get back to the game.

Part of me thinks the commercialization of football has ruined the experience. On the other hand, I remember the 70's when Michigan was on TV once or twice a year. I guess I will take the tradeoff of commercials. I don't find it as bad at home as I do in the stadium where it is maddening! At least at home I can record the game and start watching it later to fast forward through commercials.

I'll second the ads in comments aren't good that others are saying... Also I'm getting Ohio State online ads and I feel a little offended.

I don't have a specific complaint with the ads. But here's the part where I post my annual request for a formal subscription model that would be ad-free. I would love to give you money directly, and I have to presume it would more than outweight whatever I make you in ad views.

(Yes, I have used the beveled guilt button but I'd rather pay whatever the MGoStaff believe would keep the lights on while allowing ad-free browsing.)

I have no problem with most of the ads on this site.  I don't mind ads between comments.  I mind ads in the middle of comments very much.  It gives the impression that the commenter endorses the ad.  Please re-think this approach.

Honestly the ads dont bother me a bit. This is a free site to get the latest and greatest info on the sports teams we love. Without this site earning revenue, there would be no mgoblog.

I was at a stadium recently (Alabama) where they don't run off media time outs on the stadium scoreboard so they make the red hat guy hold a stick w/ an electronic countdown board on it.  The guys looked pretty pathetic holding the board which I though was an appropriate punishment for the 2 minute and 30 second stoppages.
