Toney Clemons changes his tune

Submitted by itself on

After helping to throw RR and UM under the bus, Sam Webb catches Toney Clemons on Denver radio singing a differnt tune. Clemons admits RR had to undertake a rebuilding process and wishes UM the best. So, I suppose the good news is no bad news. Worth a listen I suppose considering these dog days are long.

I think it's funny that the reactions to Trent/Clemons have been so negative (Fuck him!  Too little, too late!  I hope he gets Kobe'd in Denver!)...

...but the reactions to Boubacar Cissoko's crime spree were, "Now, now, let's not be too mean - he's just a young man who needs to mature, and I wish him the best!"

To Michigan fans, Clemons/Trent would have been better off stealing money and pointing a BB gun in someone's face than saying "Rich Rodriguez did some shady things."

Some of your priorities seem out of whack...

I have seen here, from somebody who ought to know better.

For my part, I haven't given Cissoko a pass; and in truth, Cissoko makes me very sad, because the unraveling of his young life is a very serious thing, and as much as anything it speaks to the fact that Rich Rodriguez is not going to keep a guy who is a threat to the integrity of the program.  Even if that guy is a Junior cornerback with a lot of game experience.

On the other hand, the trashtalk of now-wealthy NFL players like Trent, and Manningham, and Braylon "Lloyd Carr's University of Michigan" Edwards is at once less serious and also less excusable, being the meaningless, pointless, cheap shots that they are.

...and nowhere in this post did you mention Toney Clemons, who is not a "now-wealthy NFL player" and who is only a year older than Cissoko, at least according to high school graduating class.  (And, by the way, Cissoko went on his crime spree at about the same stage - after his sophomore season - as Clemons transferred).

So what's your excuse for all the Toney Clemons hate?

Come on Magnus, where have you been all this time. Dont you know that sticking a gun in somebody's face and robbing them is way more acceptable than a silly homage in a pre-taped video introduction on MNF.

The MGoIdiots declared it such many months ago. You should read the rules before commenting next time.

...so I'm unable to follow the various replies to replies and such, but... Magnus, I seriously do not appreciate you equating my "Too little, too late" silliness with "being Kobe'd" and the like. Get a grip. FTR, I've never pooh-pooh'd BooBoo's transgressions, so don't lump me in with your sweeping generalization of the posters and their relative sense of betrayal and forgiveness. Now as to Clemons, he seems like a fairly intelligent young man who should certainly have been aware that as a recent transfer his take on the practice requirements at U-M would be trumpeted as soon as they were made. What purpose did his interview with Schad serve if not to lob a bomb back to A2? He said he was trying to support his former teammates so obviously he held some negative feelings toward the program - otherwise he wouldn't have felt the need to speak out. Is it understandable that a college-age young adult would act this way? Sure it is. People a lot older do this sort of thing all the time. Understandable, but not excusable.

The reasons behind the MIchigan faithful's sentiment in these two cases couldn't be more different. The key is the malicious intent of Clemons/Trent to negatively affect the University of Michigan football team.  In Clemons'/Trent''s case, they attacked the program that we all follow and love. Cissoko's legal issues, while very tragic and sad, were not a direct assault on Michigan's football program.  So yes, we do react much more hostily when the program is attacked than when a former player has run ins with the law because we have a vested interest in the football team.  The answer to your question is ridiculously clear and I'd expect someone with your presence on the board to be able to make that distinction instead of this ill-attempt at creating a controversy by attacking the priorities of the board members.

but yes, 100%.  I actually care about players trashing Michigan's football program on their way out more than crimes committed by ex-players.  The former has a negative effect on an institution I care a lot about.  The latter, while tragic, really has no bearing whatsoever.

Sorry Toney, but your already on the list. Your name can be found somewhere between Boren, Justin and Rosenberg, Michael. This list is reserved for anyone who left, doubted, critcized, or tried to hurt the program during the tough times after Rich Rodriguez took over. Sorry but once your on the list, you can't be removed.

So Clemons finally took the dick out of his mouth, eh?   Along with Morgan Trent, they can both fall off a cliff. You just don't throw under the bus a righteous program like ours.

Clemons actually didn't say anything bad about Rodriguez; at least nothing that, upon investigation "stuck"; in any way, shape or form.  Clemons, by just about all accounts, got used, by Michael Rosenberg.

Trent supposedly told a reporter, that Lloyd Carr told him, that Rich Rodriguez said (you following all of this?) negative things about Trent to NFL scouts.  Rodriguez denied it.  Carr denied it.  And, left on his own, even Trent seems to have tried to climb back in off that limb.  The reporter, who never talked to Carr or Rodriguez, stands by what he says Trent told him.

Lesson in that story?  STFU, Morgan Trent.

And then, Michigan was not "found guilty of several violations."  Michigan agreed to sanction itself for a number of petty incidents with respect to CARA details.  And none of the agreed violations were anything like the huge, breathless, mind-boggling story that Rosenberg invented.  If Toney Clemons really complained to anybody -- if he gave any "testimony" at all -- it was unsupported by the joint Michigan/NCAA investigation.

Lesson in that story?  STFU, Toney Clemons.

Lesson to Braylon Edwards, as a result of "Intro-gate"?  STFU, Braylon.

Lesson to every Michigan football player, past or present?  Follow the examples of Bo and Lloyd Carr.  Don't talk to anybody in the press unless you are absolutely certain of their character and their personal interest in Michigan football.

Do you really think that there can ever be too much careful, negative Fisking of the Free Press?

Can you name anyone or anything that has consituted a bigger net negative effect on Michigan, than Rosenberg and the Free Press?  Forget wins and losses.  Nothing that you do, or that I do, or that Mike Rosenberg does, determines what happens on the field.  Nothing, that is, other than Rosenberg trying to get Rich Rodriguez fired.

Yes, you passed that point months ago. Everytime I see your avatar, I know that ANOTHER several thousand word fisk, no matter how tangential to what is actually being discussed, is coming. It's monotonous, it's beaten to death, and it's BORING. And I would "just avoid it", but I swear to god, you find a way to put in fisks about Rosenberg into threads titled "what's your favorite beer?". In every disagreement you have with someone on this board, who somehow drag the fight into FREEP land (as you're doing here). You're that guy at the party that nobody wants to talk to, because everyone knows they're going to get dragged down a a warmed over, carefully rehearsed monologue about "Why I'm a Libertarian'. For the love of EVERYTHING holy, just stop.

That Fidel Castro stepped down from the seat of Cuban power in order to pursue his two chief interests in life: writing about sports to an audience of tens of people and following Michigan football.

This is ridiculous guys.  You ought to not wish Clemons any ill-harm becuase that's just tasteless and classless.  So what that he left?  Out of the 20 or so transfers we have had since RR came to town he might as well have been thrown in with those names. Yes,  we are all still mad over the Rosenberg article from last year but it is time to move on.  Seriously.

My thoughts on Morgan Trent, Tony Clemons, Braylon Edwards, or any other former UM player that has taken a swipe lately is whatevs. If we are the leaders and the best, which we are, then it is time to move forward and put all this drama behind us. We have had some dark nights around here the last few years but a brighter day is coming. Hell I even forgive Justin Boren....... strike that, fuck him. Lets bury the hate and bask in the glory of the fact that our QB next year won't be a freshman or a walk on.
