True, but we don't really know if every scholarship player will retain his scholarship next year. Perhaps there are more spots available than we think there are. In any case, I'd rather have too many linebackers than too many slot receivers.
January 24th, 2011 at 10:40 PM ^
What do you mean by "if every player will retain his scholarship next year?" Do you anticipate massive attrition? I know it's possible but I'm sure the coaches aren't banking on that happening.

I am hoping that they don't pull his schollie. That is not what I expect out of this staff. I would hope that Gibbons sees Wile coming in as a serious threat and he either picks up his kicking game or decides that things did not work out for him here and he takes his talent somewhere else.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:06 AM ^
I wouldn't say I anticipate it, but it certainly is possible. Perhaps that is why we are still recruiting hard even though we are near our scholarship maximum.
edit: This was supposed to be a response to WolvinLA2, dunno why it posted here...

There is a good chance Mike Williams gets a medical scholarship, freeing one up. With all of his concussions, he likely won't play again according to many reports. Also, there are some walk-ons who received scholarships that may not keep them with exception to Kovacs. Watson may not return for a 5th year, and I am sure there are others in the same boat. The actual number of spots we have could be a bit higher, maybe even close to a full class when all is said and done.

Trust me, after watching these last 3 years I don't mind stockpiling defensive players. The part that I'm a little curious about, with some big names in the mix and only a couple spots left - Does this say we don't really have a chance with McClure, Fisher, Raven, Bellomy, Cooper, Brandon Alexander, Chris Barnett, etc...
Just a bit worried about the offensive neglect. We saw that neglect to one side of the ball can have ill effects. I think our O is good for this year and probably the next as is. Just like to see spots filled in for the future I guess instead of future holes like our DT situation behind Mike Martin (Dear BWC - Get your shit together please).
I guess I'll just subscribe to defense wins championships...GO BLUE

With the number of linebackers and the size of these guys it looks like we may be running a 3-4 in the near future.
January 24th, 2011 at 8:22 PM ^
It's a lot sure, but these are some pretty good players we're bringing in here. Frank Clark is too small to play TE, period. If we put him there, we're squandering his potential at LB. I don't think Beyer was ever seriously considered a LB, that was just a rumor. Especially not in the 4-3
January 24th, 2011 at 8:35 PM ^
I heard some schools were looking at him at TE. When you say he's too small, do you mean too short? He's as tall as Dustin Keller, and I know that's shorter than most, it works for him.
January 24th, 2011 at 8:38 PM ^
He's as tall yes, but Keller makes up for his lack of size with superior athleticism and outstanding blocking ability. Clark may be good, but I doubt he has the size/athleticism combo Keller has. Keller's a one-in-a-million kind of TE. Additionally, he's about 45 pounds short of Keller. At LB, he can probably play weakside at somewhere between 225-230. At TE, he'd need to get up to around 240-250. That could seriously handicap his athleticism.
January 24th, 2011 at 9:32 PM ^
Keller's good, but I don't know about one-in-a-million...
January 24th, 2011 at 9:50 PM ^
Ok...soo I might have exaggerated a bit. He has to be pretty good though, to make up for his lack of size
January 25th, 2011 at 4:46 AM ^
Totally agree..... unless we are going to the dreaded 2-5-4 defense.
January 24th, 2011 at 8:19 PM ^
I second that !
January 24th, 2011 at 8:20 PM ^
It's Poole. I think Willingham will wait a little longer. Good get. (Assuming he commits)
January 24th, 2011 at 8:21 PM ^
Well that's good. So what happens with Frank Clark and the decommit from TAMU, I forgot his name? Can we get all three or is it two of the three only?
January 24th, 2011 at 8:24 PM ^
Leilon Willingham. I'm guessing we get all three.
January 24th, 2011 at 8:37 PM ^
That's good to know. Like most people have already said, that's a lot of linebackers in one class. Looking ahead that probably affects our chances with James Ross and Royce Jenkins-Stone right?
January 24th, 2011 at 8:39 PM ^
These guys are all good, but none of them are on Ross' level. I don't think he is (or should be) afraid of competition. Like I've said all along, I think RJS signs with UM no matter what.
January 24th, 2011 at 8:42 PM ^
Well you know your stuff so I'll trust you. Thanks for the quick responses.
January 24th, 2011 at 8:38 PM ^
I think Willingham is in the fold with Poole. Frank Clark as well.
If these guys can keep Fisher--major boner.
January 24th, 2011 at 8:21 PM ^
I'm guessing Mattison doesn't have difficulty with the ladies.
January 24th, 2011 at 10:08 PM ^
But he sure is doing well with the laddies.
January 24th, 2011 at 8:22 PM ^
We could be preparing to run the 3-4? with all the linebackers.
January 24th, 2011 at 8:23 PM ^
A lot of these guys seem to fit into more of a 4-3 scheme. If this was a 3-4, we'd probably be signing 4-5 ILBs
January 24th, 2011 at 8:22 PM ^
the 3 star mafia going to bitch about if we get a 4 star???
January 24th, 2011 at 8:33 PM ^
They'd probably point out that he's a 3 star on ESPN and Rivals, but then again, they could suck it.
January 24th, 2011 at 9:23 PM ^
I'm sure there's a 4-star mafia waiting to crawl out of the woodwork...God forbid we don't take 25 5-stars every year...
January 24th, 2011 at 8:23 PM ^
would be a major pickup. Along with potentially willingham and Jones? Very nice LB class.
A DT to finish off the class, please?
January 24th, 2011 at 8:35 PM ^
Honestly, I think they get Cooper.
January 24th, 2011 at 8:42 PM ^
Don't go all BKFinest on us now.
January 24th, 2011 at 8:45 PM ^
I'll pass......I heard Bolivia is cold......
January 24th, 2011 at 8:24 PM ^
That void is quickly filling up. Now coaching staff go to work on Darian Cooper. Reel him in !
January 24th, 2011 at 8:24 PM ^
Does anybody have any video on him? A cool +1 is in it for anyone who can make that happen.
January 24th, 2011 at 8:36 PM ^
is huge
January 24th, 2011 at 9:07 PM ^
I just threw up a little bit in my mouth
January 24th, 2011 at 9:19 PM ^
one hell of a strong chair......
January 24th, 2011 at 9:23 PM ^
The camera usually adds 15 pounds. So she's probably only about 320.
January 24th, 2011 at 9:33 PM ^
This is BWC. He's approaching 330
And you want to tell me that she's just 320?
January 24th, 2011 at 11:05 PM ^
Well, muscle weighs more than fat. And I doubt that chick is anywhere near 6'5".
January 24th, 2011 at 9:24 PM ^
Cute couple.
January 24th, 2011 at 10:11 PM ^
Can she play defensive tackle?
January 25th, 2011 at 7:00 AM ^
Her pad level looks low enough
January 25th, 2011 at 8:01 AM ^
Let's not talk about her pad, okay?
January 24th, 2011 at 9:42 PM ^
or does this kid look to have really good play recognition and reaction. This staffs recruiting has the future looking bright.
