There are...
...days until J.J. Grant (LB 1985-1989) watches the Michigan Wolverines kick off the 2021 season on September 4th, as they take on the Broncos of Western Michigan at the Big House.

Go Blue.
Of course, a classic #95 is Curtis Greer. Here he is among others in a classic 70s ritual...
As always, thanks Dr. Sap. Enjoy!
I have a Curtis Greer story. My senior year, 1981, my fraternity Sigma Chi was playing Curtis's fraternity in a Greek basketball tourney (I dont remember the name of his). Curtis had just finished his rookie year with the St. Louis Cardinals and showed up to play in this game (yeah, nobody said anything about maybe him not being quite eligible) and I was given the job of guarding him.
At the time I was 6'5, about 195 and could dunk fairly easily. Curtis was 6'1 and definitely not built for jumping but clearly could move me anywhere he wanted on the court due to his weight and strength over me.
About 10 minutes or so into the game Curtis got inside position on me down low and went up for a layup. I was able to jump and pin the ball on the backboard and literally "stuffed" him as we went back down. This, unfortunately for me, drew the laughter of his ENTIRE fraternity who, when tired of laughing at this, started chanting "Curtis got faced by a white boy.....Curtis got faced by a white boy" which he clearly did not like.
It only took about one more possession for me to realize Curtis was now hell-bent on restoring his honor to his fraternity brothers. And I calculated this might require my on-court death so I wisely suffered a game-ending ankle injury. This sadly required immediate medical attention (oh the pain, the pain) forcing me to both leave the game as well as the intermural gym. And thankfully I never ran into Curtis again on campus.
Cool story, bro...I’m not being facetious either!
Today's ticket stub is a selection from Mr. Grant's senior season, a year of tickets I feel lucky to have pieces of in my collection:
I remember being at that game - I was in middle school, my parents were on a trip at the time, and the person watching us had extra tickets for a reason that I can't recall at the moment. It was a perfect storm of events really.
I was at this game as well. It was my last year of season tickets from after I graduated in '85 and to when my job moved me to OK in December of '89. I doubt I will move back to Michigan when I retire, so I will probably not get season tickets but do plan on attending more home and away games then my annual once a year game,
I think of Renaldo Sagesse for this one.
Season will be here before we know it!
I’m scared
Those Rose Bowl patches on the sleeves are so gigantic and awesome!
And suddenly it was June.
Grant was 6-1/237, but that pic makes him look like he's 5-6/250.
In the words of the great David Spade, "No, your face does."
I love the "There are..." posts! Even though...yeah, I'm kind of dreading the season.
Glad you came out of your late-night or early-morning bender okay!
Where is your buddy RGard? I am missing the engagement on this site between you two.
Was fortunate enough to be at both Rose Bowl games, '87 and '89 that JJ played. '87 was senior year for me and my girlfriend at UM. Our first time to Cali and what a great time. Of course, the game didn't end the way we wanted, but John Cooper won which ended up helping him land the job at OSU. So, that still feels like a win over the next decade.
Then, in '89 my girlfriend (then and still my wife) and I returned to Cali hoping Bo could find a way to win there even though it had not generally been kind to him. Hoard was a load the whole game, and he couldn't be stopped at the goal line. Three yards and a cloud of dust gave Bo the win.
...or days until basketball season begins where we actually have a chance to win something of substance.
I hope we get more news out of the Fort Harbaugh during summer camp. I bet JJ challenges Cade in August. I'm sure JJ is hard at work studying the play book. May the best QB in summer camp win the job!
Alan Bowman just might have a say in the matter.
