I don't think it's particularly unusual for a college student to make a road trip, especially if he already knew someone at KU.

The article says he went to KS to watch the IL - KU FOOTBALL game. The travel group was the football team travel group. The game was on Friday Sept. 8. So yes, it's entirely plausible that an IL student / basketball player would drive 6 hours to watch an away football game in early September.

Obviously still needs to go thru the criminal process but not a good look. Will say that any "bullet dodged" claims are a bit trite since I doubt there was any evidence 2+ years ago this could have happened.
