Tax Refund & Michigan Stuff

Submitted by chrs5mr on

Its a slow Thurs night...I got my tax refund and used/going to use the money toward Michigan stuff:

1. Going to use the money to renew my season tickets

2. Bought a new jacket

What about you?  What Michigan stuff are you getting if you're getting a refund?

I am self employed = no refund.
Then again, I have no boss and can roll into work at 10:30 hung over and there is no one to complain. So when I am not paying quarterly tax it rocks.

I recently started a company and am now self employed.  Im trying to start getting up at 7 to do sales, early bird gets the worm and all of that.

My tax return is going to CC bills for my startup.

way....have to upsize not only house but vehicle as well. The rest goes into my fund to fly home for a minimum of 4 games....but that would happen regardless as I won't get rid of my season tickets regardless of where I live!

How does one go about getting Football season tickets?

Are PSDs still a thing now? The "interest list"? It's always been kind of a confusing process.

My folks are renting a house and buying Utah tix for me and my sister. It's nice to provide for yourself but getting gifts is pretty great sometimes. My mom is getting me a crock pot from Kohl's this week as well. Preconceived ideas brought about by others becoming ingrained in your consciousness can happen quickly. Don't let ones that are hurtful towards others in if you can.

Though the odds are pretty good that you get tickets. I found it interesting that in one of the AD's recent emails they acknowledged that 100% of people who have been on the list recently have been offered season tickets. Very different approach than what they had been trying the last few years, which was to scare you into thinking you had to make an enormous donation to get high enough on the priority list to be offered season tickets.

I never understood the whole "spending your refund check like its a bonus" thing. The government just gave you your own money back because your paid them too much. that is money you could have used all year for credit card bills, paying down your mortgage, or beer.

I try to engineer things so that I never have a refund.  I did screw it up last year and ended up paying a $15 penalty, which sucked, but I've clearly made more than $15 over the years by not having the government have thousands of my dollars tied up waiting for a refund.

I believe as long as you have withheld 90% of the total amount you are not penalized.

90% of current years tax obligations or 100% of prior year, if I remember correctly. Though I can't recall whether it's the lesser or greater of the two... presumably the greater of the two.

However, some people simply do not have the discipline to put this money away weekly or bi-weekly, whichever way they get paid. And with the interest banks are giving I'm not certain it's such a bad idea. It will buy them a nice vacation for the family. I still prefer the no lend to the gov't situation but that's me.
