Tax Refund & Michigan Stuff
Its a slow Thurs night...I got my tax refund and used/going to use the money toward Michigan stuff:
1. Going to use the money to renew my season tickets
2. Bought a new jacket
What about you? What Michigan stuff are you getting if you're getting a refund?

I am self employed = no refund.
Then again, I have no boss and can roll into work at 10:30 hung over and there is no one to complain. So when I am not paying quarterly tax it rocks.

Haha same here!

Self-employed here too - gotta love the quarterly estimated tax. True test of self-control.

I write off half my hockey tickets as an "entertainment expense," so there is that.

to let the guys at the IRS next to my office know
February 26th, 2015 at 8:02 PM ^
I take clients, we talk business...
February 26th, 2015 at 8:16 PM ^
You mean hookers right?
February 26th, 2015 at 8:40 PM ^
I don't take hookers to they hockey games. I'm not paying $500 an hour for her to look bored and watch hockey. Plus they know none of the chants and ask too many goddamn questions. But yeah, sometimes you gotta hit the Vu after the game and help a lucky lady pay her tuition at Eastern
February 26th, 2015 at 10:37 PM ^
Well... not only Eastern... UM too. Had a friend who was at the Vu, got a dance, realized it was a person from his class at Michigan...

LLC's are exempt from paying quarterly. Structure it that way and only pay once per year.
February 27th, 2015 at 10:52 PM ^
SMLLC's are disregarded for federal purposes...still gotta pay in ES

And am taking the girlfriend on a week vacation to warm weather and beaches. But I equally like your plan.
February 26th, 2015 at 8:55 PM ^
Or you could just properally save money on the side.
Pay your aloted takes when they are only due one day a year and not give the government a interest free loan.
February 26th, 2015 at 7:24 PM ^
way....have to upsize not only house but vehicle as well. The rest goes into my fund to fly home for a minimum of 4 games....but that would happen regardless as I won't get rid of my season tickets regardless of where I live!

Dallas to Detroit Southwest flights nonstop should help

HOMESTEAD TAX
was awesome when I was young and rented.
February 26th, 2015 at 8:22 PM ^
God I loved that thing. Those were the days... Now, I try to find satisfaction in the fact that I can earn a chunk of points by putting my annual IRS payment on my credit card.

How does one go about getting Football season tickets?
Are PSDs still a thing now? The "interest list"? It's always been kind of a confusing process.
February 26th, 2015 at 7:28 PM ^
And the interest list. If you join the interest list (requires donation) and receive tickets it covers the PSDs for the 1st year.
February 26th, 2015 at 7:30 PM ^
Try this....how much is mom and dad kicking down to you with their refund, if any, this year?
February 26th, 2015 at 7:41 PM ^
what's it like? being an internet douche and all? all WD did was ask a question in the thread.
the WD hate in you is strong.
February 26th, 2015 at 8:45 PM ^
My folks are renting a house and buying Utah tix for me and my sister. It's nice to provide for yourself but getting gifts is pretty great sometimes. My mom is getting me a crock pot from Kohl's this week as well. Preconceived ideas brought about by others becoming ingrained in your consciousness can happen quickly. Don't let ones that are hurtful towards others in if you can.
February 26th, 2015 at 9:29 PM ^
My in-laws bought and renovated from top to bottom and outside a whole house. We don't have a mortgage. You mad, bruh?
February 26th, 2015 at 7:30 PM ^
But here is what I found on MgoBlue (link). A $150 donation gets you on the list for next season, and the PSD is waived for the first year, but you will pay it for remaining years.
February 26th, 2015 at 7:34 PM ^
Next season as in 2015, or 2016?
February 26th, 2015 at 7:36 PM ^
April 30th to collect the priority points and be eligible for 2015 season.
February 26th, 2015 at 7:37 PM ^
It's for 2015. Granted, just because you donate doesn't guarantee tickets.
February 27th, 2015 at 9:41 AM ^
Though the odds are pretty good that you get tickets. I found it interesting that in one of the AD's recent emails they acknowledged that 100% of people who have been on the list recently have been offered season tickets. Very different approach than what they had been trying the last few years, which was to scare you into thinking you had to make an enormous donation to get high enough on the priority list to be offered season tickets.
February 26th, 2015 at 9:30 PM ^
Well, the next season is in 2015, sooooo.....
February 27th, 2015 at 1:10 AM ^
Spring practice starting kind of blurs the lines.
February 26th, 2015 at 7:27 PM ^
Which means I'm doing my patriotic duty (cough) and paying a little more into the federal slush fund.
February 26th, 2015 at 7:37 PM ^
I salute you great american.
February 26th, 2015 at 7:31 PM ^
I never understood the whole "spending your refund check like its a bonus" thing. The government just gave you your own money back because your paid them too much. that is money you could have used all year for credit card bills, paying down your mortgage, or beer.
February 26th, 2015 at 7:33 PM ^
Yes - a refund means you lent the government, interest-free, money you could have used way more wisely, like aforementioned bills, beer, or better yet, investments.
February 26th, 2015 at 7:41 PM ^
Well, not everyone is good at saving throughout the year. I like getting a lump sum in March and then investing it in something big.

beer!
February 27th, 2015 at 4:48 AM ^
I try to engineer things so that I never have a refund. I did screw it up last year and ended up paying a $15 penalty, which sucked, but I've clearly made more than $15 over the years by not having the government have thousands of my dollars tied up waiting for a refund.
I believe as long as you have withheld 90% of the total amount you are not penalized.
February 27th, 2015 at 9:44 AM ^
90% of current years tax obligations or 100% of prior year, if I remember correctly. Though I can't recall whether it's the lesser or greater of the two... presumably the greater of the two.
February 26th, 2015 at 7:50 PM ^
It just really burns to have to write that damn check out. That is all.
February 26th, 2015 at 9:33 PM ^
Well, it's the "you don't miss what you don't see" mindset, so when you get that "bonus" check every year, that's exactly what it feels like. I believe, however, that when you get extra or unexpected money, you stash it in savings or apply it towards debt.
February 26th, 2015 at 11:34 PM ^
So that I come out just about at zero. Some years I get a small bit back and others I pay a bit. I know some friends who are all excited when they get their 12K refunds. That's just your money without Uncle Sam paying you interest.
February 26th, 2015 at 11:41 PM ^
However, some people simply do not have the discipline to put this money away weekly or bi-weekly, whichever way they get paid. And with the interest banks are giving I'm not certain it's such a bad idea. It will buy them a nice vacation for the family. I still prefer the no lend to the gov't situation but that's me.
