Sykes Commits to UCF

Submitted by Raoul on

The recruiting odyssey of Isaiah Sykes ends in Orlando: Sykes Headed to UCF (Scout subscription article).

There had been talk of him taking an official visit to Arkansas this weekend, but that obviously won't be happening.

has defied the system.

You would think someone that continues to refer to RR as Rich RodriQuez would get negged to oblivian.  But here is, close to 3000 points... simply by responding to every single post with a simple one liner that regurgitates the general board sentiment.

Whew. That's a huge relief. I was slightly terrified he was still going to commit leaving us with no remaining scholarships for one of those monsters in 2011.

Found a nonsubscription post on Sykes's commitment at the Orlando Sentinel. Given all the twists and turns of his recruiting journey, it seems fitting that he ends up part of a recruiting class that includes an MSU transfer, a JC transfer, and a teammate of Colton Christian:

Michigan State senior transfer Tom Herzog, a 7-foot center, and junior college transfer Dwight McCombs, a 6-foot-8 power forward, add size and experience to bolster the Knights’ frontcourt. Hargrave Military Academy point guard Jarvis Davis, who is 6-foot-1, was the first player to pick UCF

It's also interesting that the article claims Sykes "received late interest from Memphis and Tennessee."

In any case, good luck to him at UCF.

He was all state all everything (maybe not DESERVEDLY, but still).  Should be a sign for recruits...he probably would have gotten a lot of playing time with our thin front court. MSU will TAKE everybody to keep them away from us, but maybe if you want to play, that roster isn't the best place to go.  Because transferring for your senior season is never ideal.

we'll ever know the full story. Seems the courtship cooled off the last couple of weeks before someone probably finally gave the ol' "It's not you, it's me ... maybe we should see other people" talk.  I suspect the feeling may have been mutual, and both parties have agreed to still be friends.

Coach Belein's interest may have helped the young man in the long run as it seemed other suitors didn't really show up until Coach B started looking at him seriously. That's what it seemed like publicly but who knows what was happening behind the scenes. Maybe those other schools were there early too.

Anyway, we're a long way from OMG can we afford take both Sykes and Ziegler? I like the althleticism of this class though. Colton may not ever light it up, but a long athletic rebounder and defender could be useful.

I think he did have some interest in Michigan, but to what extent I don't actually know.  To be 100% honest, some of the speculation is on my part, but I seem to remember reading something about it on the Rivals boards.

It sounds like the kid has been through a lot, so something like what you had outlined above might not be that far off.  Either way, good luck to the kid and I'm glad he's going to have a chance to play D1 ball and get a college education.

I had a somewhat similar theory:

After recruiting Sykes for a while, coming to games, talking to coaches, etc., maybe Beilein was informed Sykes was going to have a hard time qualifying (pure speculation, only based on his multiple transfers and other people here speculating as well).  In an effort to win over some of the Detroit high school coaches, maybe he said "Look, I'll recruit you, I may even offer you, but this is mostly to try to get you other interest b/c I don't know if you'll qualify, and at that point you'll have to go somewhere else less than USF, FIU, whatever whatever."

Any chance of this?  I imagine it happens a lot across the country.  Michigan recruits, offers, knowing full well he can't and won't accept (b/c of some discussion behind closed doors).  Sykes garners more attention, the high school coaches appreciate Beilein putting himself out there, and it helps our recruiting overall in the end.

you're right, and everyone comes out a bit ahead at the end of this one -- Sykes gets to go play D1 ball, Belein enhances relationships in Detroit area, the '10 M class goes onto be very successful.

I'll be curious to see how Sykes is doing in a couple of years and if he has a mythical jumper heretofore unseen.

I've always been interested in the term "gaining interest". In the recruiting world that could mean either you're about to get an offer to you're miles away from an offer. Either way the schools have taken some sort of interest.

meh...he wasn't going to play anyways with the recruiting class we have coming in.  At best he would have played in 3 years after Novak and Stu D. are gone and that's only if Beilein doesn't continue to pull in Top 100 recruits.

Neither Sykes nor Christian seems like a great offensive player.  If they're both solid defenders and athletes, I'd rather have a big (Christian) than a guard (Sykes).  We need size.  I'm somewhat glad things worked out the way they did.

Sykes may never be a great shooter, but looks like he's got a good chance to be a scorer.  I'm with you though, happy with CC as he looks to have 2-3 inches on Sykes, apparently plays long, and seems to have a little more bulk. Hopefully scoring in this class is covered by Hardaway and Metrics, and potentially Horford down the road.

If JB did "recruit" Sykes to help his resume, it would be a major boost to Michigan for recruiting Detroit schools.  I don't have enough inside knowlege to know how much quid pro quo goes on in recruiting, but I can only see it helping Michigan in the future.

State media, usually influenced by the incessant blathering of our "friends" in EL, try to perpetuate a supposed "rift" between Michigan and the Detroit schools, both in football and basketball.  There may not be much there, but perception is reality to most people.  Things like this would go a long way toward changing that perception.

I didn't want to go as far as to say Beilein recruited Sykes ONLY to help Sykes' resume, but maybe at some point during the process Beilein knew it wasn't gonna happen, or he knew we were gonna get Christian anyway, so he used the situation to his advantage.  At that point maybe he offered just to get Sykes more pub and help his standing with the Detroit coaches.  But it's possible the whole thing was a charade to begin with.  I guess if everyone's happy it doesn't really matter, and although maybe Sykes wanted to come to Michigan, if he wasn't going to qualify (again, speculation) it really wasn't a possibility anyway.

I don't know the "real" story, but I have a hard time believing that Beilein, the head of an NCAA ethics committee, would make a "pretend" offer to a recruit or that he would be involved in some sort of recruiting "charade"--either for the recruit's benefit or his own benefit or both.
