is still alive and well and active in the comedy/film/TV world.  I saw him earlier this year on one of the late night TV shows (Leno or Letterman, maybe?).  I also remember seeing last month something about him celebrating his 88th birthday and still going strong with his insults.

No.

I hate the condescending attitude of European soccer toward North American soccer more than I hate Mexico.

However, I hate Ohio State more than I hate the condescending attitude of the SEC toward the Big Ten.

This probably has to do with the fact that Michigan has had its own success against the SEC, so who cares about Ohio State.  F Ohio State.

When the USA starts to have its own success against European teams, then we won't care about Mexico.  Then F Mexico.

Until then, CONCACAF Thunder!!

Not sure I agree with your analogy since all these teams would essentially be in the same conference (keeping with your B1G analogy) and none of them outside perhaps Ghana (because of our history with them) would be considered a rival.

Also, since the Netherlands is one of the favorites to win 6-1 odds compared to Mexico 22-1 odds it would seem to be in the USA's interest for Mexico to win. If the Netherlands win it would mean most likely that we would have to beat Belgium (15-1), Argentina (4-1) and then Netherlands (6-1) to reach the final.

So I'm rooting for Mexico and the Swiss (80-1) but above all I'm rooting for entertaining matches.

CONCACAF is the US' 'conference', and Mexico is by far the biggest rival. I think the analogy holds. I too want entertaining matches, but not over Mexico losing. I don't like that the US sent them ass-backwards into the World Cup in the first place, and Mexico got a better draw and is playing well. Boo Mexico. Plus, if the US got as far as playing Mexico in the semis, I would be so ecstatic to even get there, I would even care about losing in the semis.

I don't really follow international soccer outside of the World Cup that closely so I am not as passionate about the other events like the CONCACAF Cup. Since I've been a (World Cup) soccer fan USA has always (since 1990) been in and I think the only time we faced them (Mexico) we beat them.

I'll take the Holland team that got Chile by 2 in the prelims and Greece over Costa Rica (although I wouldn't mind seeing some CONCACAF wins) in a battle of economic super powers.

Some interesting updates down at FiveThirtyEight today - the Netherlands is getting a 72% estimated win probability against Mexico, and Costa Rica is getting 57% as an estimated win probability agains Wisconsin....errr.....Greece. Only seven nations are currently estimated to have a better than 2% shot at winning it all, with Brazil, Argentina, Germany and The Netherlands being the favorites.

Okay, I'm going to show a small part of my ignorance here. Why is it that they walk out there with little kids before the match?

Serious question, just curious.

Interesting to see how this will play out as the game progresses. Mexico is really pressing and the Netherlands seem content to sit back more and keep possession. If the Netherlands and weather it for a while, it could really pay off later in the match.
