Stupid things you heard from the blue hairs on Saturday

Submitted by bouje on
Besides the usual "what formation is this" and (after the first half) "This is the type of play i was expecting jeez". The worst thing I heard an old alum mutter was this gemstone: "Next week is really going to be a battle of coaches on the hot seat. I think whichever one loses will be fired this year. I'm not sold on either of their coaching abilities." I heard it, bit my tongue and tried to forget it because while Charlie has shown that he's not a very good HC I don't see how ANYONE with a brain could ever say that "I'm not sold on RR's coaching abilities". Luckily I wasn't drunker or I would have gotten angry.

(Disclaimer, I have been guilty of this recently in reference to the 'blue-hairs', so I am adminishing myself as well) We support the same team, we are on the same side. Not every 'blue-hair' is an ignorant, anti-RR, 'down in front' type. Not everyone under 25 is a newbie, drunk frat guy who spouts off without any knoeledge of past history and tradition. Some people say stupid things, no matter what. My suggestion in this case, instead of biting your tongue, politely inform said person that perhaps running up the score with starters on the field isn't the best coaching move and that seasoning some players on the depth chart, or trying a few new formations/looks will be more beneficial than an extra touchdown. We will likely need to depend on some of those players at some point this season. Aren't we glad we have some idea of what Floyd is capable of right now than having to drop him out there with no idea and get burned in the ND game? Educate people, nicely, when they say stuff like this, if at all possible.

Today I heard from someone that they didn't like Rich Rod b/c they heard he is a womanizer. I am just amazed at how far this has gone. I think they will confuse him w/ A-Rod next and say he is on steroids. Anyway, I told them it can't be true b/c the Detroit paper hasn't written it yet. I can't wait for Saturday's coach’s intro and the return of the "Rich Rod-ri-guez" chant.

A guy behind me said "Tate looks really slow". I mean he's no Denard Robinson, but he definately isn't slow and never looked slow to me. edit: also early in the game, a couple wmu were sitting like 3 seats away from me in the next row, and a couple michigan fans turned around, said something, wasn't like osu taunting, pretty harmless actually, but the guy freaks out and goes "HEY TURN AROUND AND SHUT UP". a lady right in front of me says to the michigan fan "respect is the name of the game". i almost said "well maybe they shoulda shut up in the first place!" look we don't have to be osu classless, but a little taunting is ok for pete's sake. i mean, after wmu finally scored, i yelled "but they still suck!"

You know what? As folks get older, and have had high level/tech careers like a Mich degree gets them, they tend to relate the decisions on the field to business. In business, the decisions and personalty of the CEO are what really counts. Thus, they zero in on RichRod as the team. You know what? I don't blame them. They also get to enjoy the game, they earned it.

I resent the broad sweeping generalizations being made by everyone over 40 by some people on this site. I am lucky to be a product of a a long line of UM Graduates. My Parents put My Older Sister Myself and younger Brother through the UM simultaneously. My late Uncle was very involved in fundraising, and overall Alumni activities. Many of my parents friends, aunt and uncle friends, and my late Principal were/are "Older" UM fans. Sometimes I got sick of hearing my Uncle's Opinion, or my late High School Principal's Opinion. However, I would love to have another opportunity to chat UM Football with either of them any time. I just think of all the benefits that have been bestowed upon me and my family, by the older generation of UM fans. I am extremely grateful and think maybe we should cut some of them some slack. I think some of them, perhaps not all of them, have earned it.

Walking in, some guy behind me who did qualify as a bluehair said "this place looks like a prison. I guess that's what you get with a banker in charge." What I don't get is how much effort it takes to get some people off their ass and making noise. Its like they are pacing themselves or something. Not all are old. Some seem to be there out of a sense of obligation and don't even look to be enjoying themselves. The woman next to be who was significantly older than my 43 years, was up and making noise all game. The student section was awesome--if only the whole place were like that, no one would want to play against us in the big house. I came away convinced that the noise issue is not architectual but cultural. The place can get loud but for some reason, the place has a hard time sustaining it.

There was a woman (around 40/50) who was behind me all game who was standing up (maybe it's just because I would stand up) and high fiving me and everything after good plays. My Dad is a "blue hair" (I guess technically a gray hair) and we both made tons of noise all game long.

Nobody around me knew who Coner! was. That and the guy in front of me turned around and asked if I was able to control my All In towel.... I told him even I wasn't sure what the towel was capable of.

I had a guy yell at me to sit down in the 1st quarter. I turned to him and said, hey, tell the other 12,000 in this section to sit down first. He said that "they were with me" and I should tell them to sit down. I laughed.
