We buy the jersey because it is a Michigan jersey first and foremost. If Denard went to Florida would any of us buy a jersey? Would we all be buying number 7 jerseys, probably. I think this is one of the most overblown things in the paying players argument.

This is correct. If they just sold blank jerseys, wouldn't you want to get the number of your favorite player? Isn't that more likely to be one of the star players? That's why they sell star players' numbers. They're essentially cutting the middle man (jersey number putter oner) out, which probably increases jersey sales for the people who don't want to bother with finding someone to get a number on it.

I do think Michigan reinvests its money into providing for its student athletes though. They have invested in facilities that both attract students-athletes to Michigan and keep them happy during their time here. There's obviously more specific compensation issues, but I don't really want to get in a full on discussion of that.

So if you have some $$$ burning a hole in your pocket, and you're a Michgan fan on the hunt for some gear, you're going to be less inclined to buy a Michigan jersey of any number versus one with 1, 16, or 28???

I'm just sayin.

I think both of you have valid points... there's a reason why #16 is flying off the shelves but if someone is in the market for one, they are going to buy a Michigan jersey regardless.

on one side of it, let's say they simply put the number of the season...such as '11, not really going to tempt my purchase...now in a couple years sure...13 has always been my favorite =) have a UM jersey by that number right now...though 11 was the number worn by the Wistert's three which is kind of cool. And back in the 97 season, undefeated and all, wasn't very appealing then. My boy on the other hand, has a 2, a 5, and now 16...because he idolized those numbers. And fortunately as he's grown he's been able to 'keep up' with his favorites...in fact through his various sports leagues he always picks a number associated with his favorite player...agree that the dynamic of a kid like Denard probably boots jersey sales through the roof...if you limit it to 1 or something more symbolic instead of player associations, I suppose people will simply buy what's available. But after the ND game, pretty sure 16 under the lights jerseys were off the hook..just like the special flag hats last season...

That article is a hack job.  Complete BS.  Yes, schools make money off of players.  Yawn.  Let's see the article's author (when he's not attending a OWS rally given his penchant for fairness) dive into how football (and a little bit of basketball) provides an education for these student-athletes and funds 20 something other non-revenue generating sports.
