Start of Bowl Season Open Thread/New Mexico/Potato/New Orleans Bowl
We'll see how it goes. If there's a lot of interest, or a lot of other posts shoving it down the front page, we can do one for each bowl. If it's a slow day, this can take care of all 3 bowl games today. It's not like it's the Rose Bowl or anything today. Though I am anxious to see the offense of Temple. I hear their OC is pretty good. And SDS later should look familiar. Ohio/Utah ST? Yeah, I got nothing. But that doesn't have to matter in these threads. It's for the fun, the love of college football. And werid JHackney pictures. So come one, come all, come Blue Dragon, and let's enjoy the cheesy greatness/awfulness of the bowl season.
Edit: We've had 3 new threads since kickoff, and 10 still below it on the front page. I'm not bumping stuff for a new thread for each of these bowls. Someone might on New Year's Day or something. If a mod wants separate threads for these, be my guest, just seems a waste of space. If something groundbreaking happens that bumps this off the front page, we probably won't care about the bowls anymore anyway.
First game going well..I gave the points. We'll see about Utah State and SDS later.

Announcer almost says "arm punt." So close.
December 17th, 2011 at 4:52 PM ^
I like the cut shot of Wyoming coordinators wondering what else could go wrong here...

After the Tebow era in Florida Addazio was targeted by their fans as the cause of their offensive issues in Urb's last years. Watching Temple this season (and Charlie Weis' limited schematic advantage in Fla.) makes you wonder.
December 17th, 2011 at 5:00 PM ^
I have often wondered about Florida fans.
December 17th, 2011 at 5:01 PM ^
It's now time for the Ohio (not that Ohio) game. Hopefully this will be much more entertaining than this awful New Mexico bowl.
December 17th, 2011 at 5:11 PM ^
Temple wins free underwear and socks for a year, courtesy of Gildan.
EDIT: Note to M-Wolverine - love the title edit, but the New Mexico Potato New Orleans Bowl is next year. It will be played in Sao Paulo.

You know, I half debated with all three whether to put the full sponsor names in or not. Last year it was about 50-50 between those who thought those whack long names were hilarious, and those that thought it was just free advertising with no cut for Brian. I think I'll save it for some horrendous bowl that's the only one on that night.
December 17th, 2011 at 6:29 PM ^
Though I AM really regretting not getting that "Famous Idaho Potato" in. Because, you don't want the thread to be confused with some other Idaho Potato Bowl open thread.

The Hyundai Fight AutoZone With Chick-Fil-A Hunger Bowl it is then.
December 17th, 2011 at 5:14 PM ^
FTW.
I can see why the Big East is scared.

Owlball?
December 17th, 2011 at 5:43 PM ^
I liked how some Temple fans were cheering "We Aren't Penn State" earlier in the season.
December 17th, 2011 at 7:34 PM ^
This sort of clever approach is pretty common at Temple; however, far better are the rollouts used at basketball games at Liacouras Center. Of particular excellence is the annual Villanova commentary (so sweet):
as for Penn State...
Personally, I don't hate Penn State as much as Villanova but it's getting there...
December 17th, 2011 at 6:27 PM ^
...what?
December 17th, 2011 at 7:28 PM ^
That's it.
December 17th, 2011 at 7:37 PM ^
...that owl is pretty scary. But I'd suggest the Owl below, at least until he turns pro in April:

Boise is an underrated place for an early 20s kid to get wasted.
December 17th, 2011 at 5:35 PM ^
Awright Ohio. I got 1 confidence point riding on your performance on the smurf turf. Let's do this.
December 17th, 2011 at 5:42 PM ^
I have 15 points on this game....just won 11 with Temple.
December 17th, 2011 at 5:48 PM ^
for the first two games of the bowl season. I figure I'll gamble more points on teams that I actually, you know, watch with some regularity, like Michigan (I have us at 33) or obvious ones like Boise over ASU at 34 (coaching change and implosion season).
December 17th, 2011 at 5:50 PM ^
I sort of ranked them based on how competitive I thought games would be, with the closer ones hopefully garnering more points for me.
December 17th, 2011 at 5:55 PM ^
Could someone please make that horrendous turf illegal. It's like I'm watching a game on a hollywood blue screen! Esp. with ute state's blue uni's. It looks liking crap!! L
December 17th, 2011 at 6:02 PM ^
commercial, why are those women hitting each other with sticks? It looks like there are little Swedish and American flags in the background, but my ancestors never taught me about this one.
Oh, and Go Ohio (NTO), get me my 2 points.
December 17th, 2011 at 6:10 PM ^
But that was a horrible call.
December 17th, 2011 at 6:14 PM ^
Utah State is having its way on both sides of the ball.
December 17th, 2011 at 6:34 PM ^
If we go to a playoff, can we still have the first round endorsed by potatoes, chicken sandwiches and weed removal products?
December 17th, 2011 at 6:36 PM ^
A chicken sandwich and fries is a good treat after an afternoon of weed control.
December 17th, 2011 at 6:55 PM ^
Just saw the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl mascot, "Spuddy Buddy," on the sidelines....
Someone needs to keep Dave Brandon away from ESPN for the next 2 hours.
December 17th, 2011 at 7:26 PM ^
9-7 Utah State. Come on, Ohio - I have 15 points on this game.
Note to Bobcats: It's a clock - you manage it.
December 17th, 2011 at 7:42 PM ^
We got us some serious field goal kickin' on this here blue field yonder.
December 17th, 2011 at 7:38 PM ^
Why do the backs of Utah State's uniforms have hockey sticks on them?
December 17th, 2011 at 7:39 PM ^
Everytime I hear Blankenship I think I'm watching "Most Extreme Challenge" on Spike again. Come to think of it, that would be a better use of my time than "Morons on Smurf Turf".
December 17th, 2011 at 7:40 PM ^
Watching that last Ohio drive...jeebus...clock management, execution...
December 17th, 2011 at 7:46 PM ^
Geez learn to tackle!
December 17th, 2011 at 7:55 PM ^
....they can learn to close gaps too?
Come on, Bobcats. Five field goals and you're back in it.
EDIT: Two FGs to tie now! My faith in my picks has been restored!
December 17th, 2011 at 7:55 PM ^
Ohio strikes back!
December 17th, 2011 at 8:03 PM ^
Was the Ohio kicker wearing orthopedic socks?
EDIT: This is now Verdun apparently, with an injury each play...
December 17th, 2011 at 8:22 PM ^
Ohio can't stop the run. The Ut St tailbacks and option looks are doing well. We might drop this pick...
December 17th, 2011 at 8:29 PM ^
Ohio's run defense looks awful, to say the least, but I must say, if I am playing for a bowl of potatoes, my desire to mount a passionate comeback is...questionable? My response is, "No thanks, I saw a Safeway down the street with potatoes on sale."
I need my picks from 20 points upwards to tear it up.
December 17th, 2011 at 8:38 PM ^
Never again shall I question the sanctity of potatoes.
December 17th, 2011 at 8:48 PM ^
The potatoes just kicked in for the Cats! Win me a point!
December 17th, 2011 at 8:45 PM ^
Isn't everybody's? Can you keep playing if you win?
December 17th, 2011 at 8:47 PM ^
You just keep winning after you have won....
